Subject: [FFML] [ADMIN] Backed up mail cleared

For a few hours today, all mail to the FFML was held up in a backlog due
to a misconfiguration of the mail server routing file (my mistake).

Everything should be back to normal now, but if you notice anything
unusual please e-mail me at pmak@aaanime.net.

If you posted something and haven't seen it come through, please post it
again as it has been lost.

I will be working on increasing the performance and reliability of the
FFML this weekend.

For those of you who are UNIX techies and are curious what's going on: The
FFML is served by anifics.com and pmak.demandindustries.net. When you send
a message to ffml@anifics.com, it is received by Listar, which then sends
it to the SMTP server (qmail) at pmak.demandindustries.net. qmail is
ultimately responsible for delivering the message to its destination.

The problem is that if anifics.com cannot contact
pmak.demandindustries.net due to a network problem, Listar will DISCARD
the message instead of continuing to try to pass it onto qmail.

I don't use the mail server on anifics.com because bandwidth is more
expensive on that server, and the FFML uses a lot of bandwidth.

Because of the unreliability inherent in the above configuration though,
for now I've configured Listar to deliver to the local SMTP server.
(That's what caused the downtime today - I didn't quite do it right.) It
will run fast and reliably this way, but I can't do it all the time due to
the expensive bandwidth charges of anifics.com's ISP.

This weekend, I plan on coming up with a more permanent solution that
allows me to use Listar on anifics.com and qmail on
pmak.demandindustries.net without the reliability problem. I'll put some
SMTP server on anifics.com that will just relay all the messages to
pmak.demandindustries.net, and have Listar talk to it.

So, if all goes well, the reliability problem should be solved permanently
by this weekend.
