Chapter 3 Hungry for Trust

----------

"What do you mean, 'Okay, Lina-san'? You've never ever given me a

straight answer without me pounding you into peanut oil first." Lina

stared at Xelloss with a suspicious look in her eyes. She extended a

finger and began poking him to make sure he was real.

"Well... if you must know the truth..."

Lina looked angry and was about to shout 'Hell Yeah!' when Xelloss

stopped stalling and finished his sentence.

"I'm telling you the truth because you're the only person I can trust

right now and if the world and myself are to survive, they are most

likely going to depend almost entirely on you. Does that answer your

question Lina-san?" His lips curled into their familiar smile as he

lay his arms to rest on his legs which were crossed indian style.

Lina had no clue as to what Xelloss was saying, but something about

his seemingly honest plea for help touched something deep inside of

her being. It was almost as if her instincts were telling her to trust

this former Mazoku. But that couldn't be right. She had always felt

that Xelloss wasn't to be trusted. There was absolutely no way she

could just outright trust him at just his personal assurances. She'd

sooner believe that Amelia had stolen a lollypop then trust Xelloss,

but something inside her was telling her otherwise. Not her common

sense, not her intellect, not her woman's intuition, but something

more primal. She just wasn't sure what IT was.

As Xelloss just sat there smiling, he observed Lina's face go through

several different tranfigurations. From puzzled, to disbelieving, back

to puzzled, and finally to retrospective. He assumed Lina was trying

to decide whether or not to trust him. It would not do to have Lina-

san distrust him, not now. Time was very crucial, and if she

distrusted him then that may become a weakness that their enemies

could exploit. And weakness would spell doom for everything and

everyone he held dear, not to mention severly inconveniancing him.

More extreme measures must be taken.

"Lina, I know you don't trust me further then you can punt me, but I

promise that unless I tell you otherwise, I will only tell you the

truth. Nothing more, nothing less."

"Uh uh buster. You've never lied to me straight out before, but I know

you've told me a lot of half truths and twisted lies. I want your

promise that from now on you'll only tell me the whole truth, and

elaborate when I ask you to." The spunky sorceress crossed her arms

and indicated that the world would burn and crumble before she backed

down.

Xelloss stopped smiling and tilted his head forward to examine Lina a

tad more closely. He prided himself on being an excellant judge of

character, a useful trait he had acquired early in his considerably

long life, and came to the conclusion that Lina was exactly like him.

Stubborn to a fault and a genius at bargaining. There was no way she

would relent her posistion. Xelloss took a deep breath, opened his

recently rounded purple eyes and said. "Sure."

Lina fell to the floor again.

Instead of her hastily scrambling back onto the bed, she stopped when

she heard a loud rumble emanate from Xelloss' mid- -section. A sound

Lina knew well. It was the sound of ravenous, all consuming hunger.

One that raced through one's being and demanded to be saited by not

one, not two, but ten full course meals. And, as if it were the call

of a ferocious jungle cat, her own stomach answered. A growl not

nearly as deep as his own, but just as strong and equally as urgent.

Xelloss looked down at Lina, and Lina looked up at Xelloss. Through

their mutual stare, a silent acknowledgement passed between them. They

both stared at each other for another full second and as if

syncronized by a stopwatch, both stomachs roared again at exactly the

same moment. Acting as a starting pistol, they both sped out of the

room and down the stairs toward the dining room.

***********

"Ten orders of the Spunky Sorceress' Battle Breakfast, with an order

of waffles on the side." Announced Lina to the waitress as she perused

the large menu.

The petite blond haired waitress raised an eyebrow, but wrote the

uncommonly large order onto her order pad. She then turned toward the

shabbily dressed man and indicated she was ready for his order.

Xelloss, however, had his head stuck behind his menu and didn't

notice. Lina resolved to bonk him on the head to get his attention,

but before she could, he lay the menu aside and began to order.

"Alright, I'll have eight Mysterious Magical Priest Morning Meals with

a side order of fried sausages and two jugs of milk for the both of

us." He smiled as he said the last part, he knew Lina liked milk with

her waffles.

The waitress just stared at him a moment and then looked at Lina, then

at her pad. She wrote the order down, then went to the back room to

put on her lifting brace. She had a feeling with these two, she would

 need it.

Lina, on the other had, was totally taken aback. Xelloss had been

human for less then twenty-four hours and he was ordering almost as

much as her. She knew that Mazoku had very little love of human food,

the fact that Xelloss was planning on eating a lina-esque ammount of

comestibles was... well, she wasn't sure WHAT it was, but she was sure

it wasn't right.

Noticing Xel was staring morosely out the window, she reaching over to

tap him on the shoulder. He turned to look at her and Lina decided to

try out their new agreement.

"Xel, why are you ordering so much food. You were a Mazoku and I know

that Mazoku don't care very much for human food. And while I'm asking,

why is there a meal on this menu that seems named after you?"

"Lina-san... I could ask the same thing about you. I mean, really,

'Spunky Sorceress' Battle Breakfast?' all you would have to do is add

'Redheaded' to the name and it would be a synonym for 'Lina Inverse'.

"Hey, Hey, Hey, I asked first and you promised that you would always

tell me the truth. So spit it out, Mr. 'Mysterious Magical Priest'."

"So I did. But perhaps I should start at the beginning. And when I say

the beginning, I truly mean the beginning."

"Huh?" was all Lina could say. Xelloss was being more mysterious now

then usual.

"This, Lina, is my most secret of secrets. Something that only five

beings besides the Lord of Nightmares know about. The source of all

the secrets that I have kept for an untold of amount of time. But

before I can tell it to you, I must take some precautions." And with

that, Xelloss balled his right hand into a fist and raised it above

his head. Chanting something under his breath, he opened his hand and

purple sparks seethed in his outstretched palm. *SILENCE SPARK*

At the utterance of spell, purple sparkles cascaded around them and

fixed themselves in the air like stars in the firmament. The purplish

tint lent a violet glow upon the two magic users. Lina looked around,

trying to determine a reason for the purple sparks besides mood

lighting, when she realized that she could no longer hear any of the

other diners at all.

Author's Notes: Tuesday, January 30, 2001

I'm a little embarrassed. I've been busy with real life, and I haven't finished this chapter. I know that I should have, but now it is simply too late. I wanted to at least try and get what I do have, out, to show people I have still been writing, and to let people know that I now have a web page. <http://www.xelan.cjb.net>

*warning, it has been down recently.

It is very sad that the FFML is closing down, but I am certain that it will be revived in some shape or form, in the not too distant future. After all, Fanfic authors are some of the most imaginative people around, so if they don't find a way, I will be very surprised.I'm reasonably sure that the FFML, like Life, will always find a way.

The FFML has been a wonderful place, for people like myself, to develop ideas and to hone writing skills. I want to thank some of the influential writers that first acquainted me with the FFML. Thanks to Robert Haynie Jr. aka. Kenko, Gary Kleppe (pronounced klep-pee for those that don't know), and Kevin D. Hammel. I would also like to thank David A. Tatum who is just someone I can't leave out. I would write more, but no sense in cluttering up the FFML with any more useless garbage. ^_^

                                                    Ja na! Minna-san,

                                                      Xelan Metallium
