Chapter 6 "Making a Difference"
Baloo was startled from his repose by a squeal of delight.
Getting up, he saw his boss hugging Cindy. "Beckers..." he began.
"Oh, where are my manners?" Rebecca cooed while not
relinquishing her hold on Cindy, "Come in, come in." The young girl
didn't have much choice in the matter as she was nearly yanked into the
office.
"Rebecca," Baloo said in warning, "You just met her. Give the
kid some air." The bearess seemed to be totally oblivious to him. He was
just trying to figure out a way to separate the two when he heard Kit
screaming. Turning, he saw the brown bear cub at the top of the stairs
and looking mortified.
"Oh Kit!" Rebecca exclaimed while letting go of Cindy. Given a
reprieve, the young rabbit took the opportunity to back away from the
crazed woman. "What's wrong?"
"'Sides from you crushing his girlfriend?" Baloo offered. His
boss gave him a warning look. "Hiya Cindy. Don't mind ol' Beckers."
Cindy looked towards the ground. "Thanks. I mean, hello sir."
She then turned to regard Kit with a sparkle in her eye. "Hi Kit."
Rei rushed down the stairs and interpose herself between Usagi
and Cindy. <Nuts!> She hadn't wanted Usagi to find out that Cindy was a
rabbit. "Hi Cindy. I'm really sorry about this."
"It's okay, Kit." Cindy turned back to Usagi. "It's nice to meet
you, Mrs. Cloudkicker."
"Are you hungry?"
"I had breakfast and I bet Cindy did too," Rei declared. "We
don't want to be late for school, MOM." Turning to Cindy, she said,
"Come on, Cindy." Usagi looked disappointed.
"You two have a good day at school."
"If that's even possible," Baloo commented gruffly and then gave
his boss a toothy grin. "Ya don't be late now, Kit."
"I won't, Papa Bear. I'll see you after school," Rei replied.
"Bye!" she called to Usagi.
"Good-bye, Mrs. Cloudkicker," Cindy added as she followed her
boyfriend out of the office. Once outside, Rei groaned and Cindy
giggled. "Kit, is your mom always like that?"
"I'm afraid so," the cub commented. <But I thought Rebecca's
last name was Cunningham, not Cloudkicker? Maybe she's Kit's stepmom.>
Rei now regretted that she had not paid more attention to the show. "I
think she's just happy that I met you."
"Oh..." Cindy said and blushed a little.
"Now why did ya go 'n' do that?" Baloo demanded as soon as the
office door was closed.
"Huh?" Usagi asked.
"Go 'n' make Cindy think you were Kit's mother?"
"I think it's sweet." Usagi walked over to the desk and sat
down.
"Sweet?!" Baloo demanded, "I think it's dang stupid!" The gray
bear glared slightly, "I knew you kids would be trouble."
"Who are you calling a kid, Mister?" Usagi demanded.
"You, little missy. Even Beckers doesn't meddle in Kit's life."
The pilot was getting worked up now. "And 'nother thing, why were ya
trying to embarrass Kit?"
Usagi wailed. Fortunately for Baloo, it was nowhere near Usagi's
typical level. "Why are you being so mean?" The gray bear was caught
off-guard. "I just want to make sure Kit is happy. Don't you want him to
be happy?"
"Now, now, Beckers, don't get your pigtails in a knot." Usagi
stopped suddenly and sniffled. The big bear scratched the back of his
head for a moment then sighed. "Look, Rebecca... Usagi. A'course, I want
Kit ta be happy. But don'tcha think givin' Kit a mom without his okay is
a little... underhanded?" He grinned slightly and continued, "After all,
he's already got himself a girlfriend he doesn't know about. That'll
blow his propellers off."
Usagi shook her head for a second, then agreed, "You're right,
Baloo." The bearess was about to say more but was cut off as the office
door banged open and Ami tumbled into the office. There were a bunch of
navigation charts and books falling out of the lion's arms.
"Like... sorry, man," the lion said from the floor.
"Do I even want ta know?" Baloo asked.
"I asked Ami to read up on the navigation charts. You need a
navigator."
"Kit's MY navigator!" Baloo snapped defensively.
"Kit isn't here," the bearess pointed out. Baloo's face softened
and he looked sheepish. "We do have those shipments today and you said
you needed a good navigator. Ami will figure them out fast."
The Bearston Private School for Girls' campus was noisy during
the recess hour. Students were outside enjoying the nice weather freed
from the constraints of classroom rules but not from the eagle eye of
their teachers. In one small section of the playground, a group of six
year olds talked.
"Nuhuh Molly. Danger Woman don't say nothin' when she clobbers
the baddies," Wendy protested. The bear cub was looking intently at her
friend.
"Of course, she does," Molly Cunningham argued smoothly.
"No, she don't. We don't never hear it," Katie piped in.
"'Sides, Danger Woman don't sound like Don Karnage!" His corny speeches
were legendary. The golden cub gave her a curious look. "She ain't a
pirate."
Chibi-Usa sighed. "You didn't hear it before, Katie, 'cuz it's
`super secret" the golden cub replied. Her hands were on her hips.
"Then how do you know it?"
<Yeah, how DO you know it, Chibi-Usa?> the little girl asked
herself. "Frosty Pep box," she fibbed after a short pause. The cub
glanced over her shoulder. <I don't like to fib.> If there was one thing
that could really work her mother up, it was her fibbing. She kept
thinking Usagi would pop up any instant while she was spinning the lie.
"She can't go around telling everybody. What if the baddies hear it?"
"You're so lucky, Molly!" the kitten griped, "Why can't I find
somethin' like that."
Chibi-Usa consoled her new friend as the bell rang. As they
filed into the school, the little girl let her thoughts wander. <I guess
it ain't so bad. Molly's friends are nice.> Even if they were a bit
childish. Chibi-Usa still wished she were older. The teacher's voice
drew her attention.
"Now, class, we're going to do some drawing."
<Sugoi!> Chibi-Usa grinned. She was good at drawing. <Hmmm...
now what should I draw?>
<Kami-sama!> Hino Rei thought. She was sitting with the other
Jungle Aces at a table in the school cafeteria during lunch. <But these
are Kit's friends.> So she did her best to look impressed. "That's
incredible!" <Incredibly baka!> the cub silently added.
"So Kit," Ernie asked, "Are ya coming to the meetin' today?"
"Gotta help Papa Bear on a run," Rei answered and then to
placate the boy, she amended, "But I'll show up tomorrow. Wouldn't want
to miss that baseball game." <I'll have to have Baloo show me where it
is.>
"Boy, you're really hooked on that chick, huh?"
<Why you little...> The cub controlled her temper and forced a
smile onto her face. "Cindy is a nice girl."
"Guess so," Ernie retorted, "I mean you stuck up for Oscar so
why not girls?" Rei dearly wanted to wipe that smug expression off the
hyena's face. "Maybe you just ran out of adventures."
"Oh yeah?" Rei challenged, "Well, just wait until I tell you
this." As she launched into her story, she was glad Usagi wasn't around.
Cindy sighed dreamily looking in the direction of Kit
Cloudkicker as she sat with a group of her friends. <He's such a nice
guy and he's MY boyfriend!>
"You are SO lucky!"
"I know," the rabbit agreed with her friend. It had taken a
while for Cindy to fully realize what had been said at Higher for Hire
that morning. Most importantly was the fact that Baloo had said she was
Kit's girlfriend. Kit's mom seemed to like her too.
"How'd you snag him, Cindy?" a lioness asked.
"Hmmm?"
"How did you get Kit to go out with you?"
"No, you can have my cookies." This set the other girls into
fits of giggling.
"How's it going, Wildcat?" Baloo asked the lion.
"Fine," Ami responded. Picking up another sandwich, she took a
bite before saying, "This is quite good."
"Thanks. My motto is never work on an empty stomach."
Ami smiled at that. "That is a very good motto, Baloo." She
closed one of the technical manuals she had been reading and rubbed her
eyes. "It'll be nice to sleep indoors. I do admit that hammock is
comfortable but I am used to sleeping in a real bed."
Chuckling, the pilot sat down and leaned back in his chair.
"Tell me somethin', Wildc... Ami. How did ya get here in the first
place? I didn't notice anything strange in Li'l Britches 'till he saw
me. Then he acted like I was a wild animal or somethin'."
Ami frowned slightly before saying, "I haven't had an
opportunity to confer with the others." She regarded the big bear and
admitted, "If I had been suddenly put into Kit's body, I might have
acted in a similar fashion." Baloo was looking baffled again. "Did I
confuse you?"
"Naw... It's just... Well pardon me but I'm not used ta Wildcat
talkin' like you do." Rubbing his chin, he wondered, "Do ya always talk
like this?"
"I... I need to be precise," Ami said softly,
"Gee, Ami, I didn't mean ta hurt your feelin's," Baloo
apologized when he noticed the sad expression on the lion's face. Before
Ami could respond, Usagi came into the room. "Oh hiya, Boss Lady."
"Ba-loo," Usagi whined, "You PROMISED me you'd do that downtown
delivery BEFORE you had lunch."
"Haven't had it yet so don't blow your gaskets, Becky," Baloo
replied, "I was talking to Wildcat."
"Then would you please go and do it. The client just called and
he sounds upset."
"Aw Beckers..."
"NOW!"
Ami was startled. <I've never heard Usagi talk like that.>
"When the goin' gets tough, the tough get goin' on the rest of
us," Baloo grumbled out as he pushed himself up from the table. "But I'm
only doin' it 'cause you said `please." The bearess gave him a frosty
glare.
The sun was sliding down the western sky promising a pleasant
day for tomorrow. Out in the harbor, a signal buoy rang as the swells
rocked it. Overhead, seagulls cried shrilly. The docks were preparing to
close business for the day.
Inside Hire for Higher, Usagi was trying to listen to two
conversations at once. In her right ear, a potential client was
describing what they wanted. In her other ear, her daughter was happily,
and excitedly, outlining her day at school. Finally Usagi couldn't keep
up with it and said, "Excuse me for a moment, sir," into the phone
before putting it aside. Turning to her daughter, she lifted the golden
cub off of her lap and requested, "Sweetheart, Mommy has to talk to this
client. Could you please wait until I'm done?"
"Awww..." Chibi-Usa began. Usagi turned her and gave her a
gentle push. The cub pouted slightly and then grinned. "I'm gonna help
Baloo!" she declared and ran outside. <I'll show Mommy my picture
later.>
"Molly!" Usagi began then sighed. Picking up the receiver, she
resumed, "I'm terribly sorry about that, sir. Now you were saying?"
Chibi-Usa was not happy. Baloo did not need her help. In fact,
she felt rather insulted when he obviously tried to let her down gently.
Stomping back up the dock, she felt herself fuming. <I won't get mad,>
she told herself sternly. <Baloo's right. I could get hurt. I'm not
really six though.>
The cub felt a little lonely. She walked towards the office door
slowly, Lucy held in her arms. <I hope Mommy's off the phone.> That was
one thing she loved about Usagi. Her "cousin" didn't have important
matters of State demanding her attention like Neo-Queen Serenity. Usagi
could listen to her. This realization saddened the child a little. She
had rarely confided in Usagi about her everyday problems.
She reached up for the door handle and then paused. Turning back
to look along the docks, she squinted in the mid-afternoon sun. "That's
Kit, but who's that?" There was someone with Kit. Not even glancing at
the office door, she ran towards the approaching pair. When she got
closer, she stopped dead in her tracks and stared. <A rabbit?!?> Feeling
a smile spread across her face, the golden cub started running again.
"Kit!" she called out. The older boy stopped and covered his
face with his paws. Running up to the pair, the little girl hugged the
rabbit and announced, "Hi! I'm Molly!"
"Molly, this is Cindy," Kit stated calmly and then turning to
Cindy added, "Sorry about this."
"Mommy will like Cindy."
"Um Molly... She's already met Cindy," Kit corrected.
"Oh, this is your little sister?" Cindy declared with a smile.
<She's cute.> She missed Kit's blush. Kit's stock rose again.
"Yep!" Chibi-Usa chirped.
"MOLLY!" The little group turned to see Rebecca Cunningham
standing in the doorway. "YOUNG LADY, GET BACK HERE THIS INSTANT!"
Chibi-Usa giggled and gave Cindy another hug before running back towards
Higher for Hire.
Gibber carefully glanced around the street before slipping into
a sleazy looking bar. While he wasn't wanted by the authorities in Cape
Suzette like Dumptruck or Maddog, the pirate still felt uncomfortable
away from the Iron Vulture.
Don Karnage had sent him here to gather information from their
spies. Gibber was trusted more than most but he didn't know all of his
pirate captain's resources. Walking through the smoke-filled and stale
smelling air, he made his back to a dark corner of the bar and settled
himself down to wait.
Hanging up the phone, Usagi sighed a little. "I need a cup of
tea," she said to no one in particular. <I should get supper too.
Molly'll be hungry.> She knew she was. Turning, she entered the small
kitchen of Higher for Hire.
She became a little concerned when she didn't see Chibi-Usa
sitting at the kitchen table. Her concern became puzzlement when she saw
her daughter sitting in a corner.
"Whatcha doin'?" she asked the golden cub. The little girl gave
a guilty start and looked towards her mother. This puzzled the bearess
who crossed the floor and crouched down by the chair.
"Chibi-Usa?"
"Hi Mommy," the child answered softly.
"What's wrong?" the bearess asked. She placed her hand on the
little girl's forehead. "You don't feel hot."
"I'm okay," Chibi-Usa replied, "It's just..." Much to both
bear's surprise, she sniffled a little.
"What is it, sweetheart?"
"Promise you won't get mad, Usagi?"
"Chibi-Usa, what's wrong?" Usagi demanded.
"Promise?"
Usagi sighed a little and then said gently, "I promise I'll
listen." She smoothed the child's hair out and smiled. "Did something
happen? You were really happy before." When the cub remained silent, she
prodded, "Did you break something?"
"No." There was a considerable pause before Chibi-Usa answered,
"I... fibbed."
Usagi blinked a little. Lifting her daughter up, she sat on a
chair before settling the child onto her lap. "It must be really
bothering you, Chibi-Usa-honey."
"Well... it's just that you don't like lying."
"I don't," the bearess agreed, "Do you want to tell me about
it?" It took a little while for the story to come out but eventually the
golden cub did tell it. "And you thought I'd be mad?"
"Yeah."
Usagi chuckled, gave her daughter a kiss on the top of her head,
and then a large hug. "Oh, Pumpkin, did you think I'd be really upset?"
The child nodded. "How come?" Chibi-Usa shrugged. "Well I'm not." Giving
her daughter another quick hug, she suggested, "Now what if you show
that picture? I haven't seen it yet. Then we can have supper. Want some
Frosty Pep for dessert?"
"No," Chibi-Usa replied with a scowl, "That stuff tastes yucky.
I don't know how Molly can eat it!"
Usagi smiled mischievously and asked, "Well, what about some
chocolate instead?"
"Yeah!" the child declared happily then asked, "Then we can
listen to Danger Woman together?" She had to bone up on the program.
"You promise to try and not fib?" The cub nodded. "Then I'd like
to listen to Danger Woman with you."
"Thanks Mommy," the child answered and wrapped her arms around
Usagi's neck.
Sometime after supper that evening, Chibi-Usa had just finished
having a bath. Sleepily, she pushed an arm into her pajamas and yawned.
<I'm glad Mommy wasn't mad at me.> After a moment, she thought, <We had
a great time.>
Contentedly she finished dressing in her pajamas and then
crawled up onto the bed where her rag doll was sitting. "Do you want me
to read you a story, Lucy?" The child smiled a little. "I thought so."
Looking around, she was disappointed to find that there were no
storybooks around. "I didn't see none downstairs either." After a little
more thought, the little girl giggled. <But I bet Kit has some!>
Sliding from the bed, she declared, "Come on, Lucy."
A yellow seaplane left Louie's place and climbed into the
eastern sky. Behind it, the late afternoon sun was slowly sinking into
the watery bed of the South Pacific.
Once at a cruising altitude, the pilot yawned and declared, "Man
oh man, that was some meal! Ol' Baloo's ready for a nap."
"Turn right ten degrees to zero-eight-five, Baloo."
<She's pretty good for a girl.> "Gotcha, Wildcat," Baloo
replied. He made the necessary yaw adjustment then turned his attention
to the brown cub who was sitting quietly behind the co-pilot's chair.
"Well, how was the food?"
"Great!" Rei replied with a grin, "I bet Cindy'd like to try it.
You should bring her 'n' Kit out here sometime, Baloo."
"That reminds me, Li'l Britches. Did you set Cindy straight?"
"Straight?" the cub asked, "About what?"
"About the fact that Becky ain't your mom."
"What?!" Rei squeaked out, "She isn't?"
"Nope."
"Why that ditzy dumpling head!" The youth fumed for a moment
before grumbling, "Why's she trying to meddle?!" The gray bear's
chuckling drew her attention away form her immediate thoughts. "Are you
telling me that Ms. Cunningham isn't my... I mean Kit's mom? Not even
his stepmom?" Baloo shook his head. "Well that explains why we have
different last names." She scowled a little and added, "I wonder why
Usagi didn't tell me about this? Sometimes, I think she'd forget her
head if it wasn't attached to her shoulders."
"Rei, can I ask you somethin'?" the pilot queried.
"Sure, Papa Bear."
"You and Usagi are sisters, huh?"
<Sisters? Me and Usagi!?> Rei shuddered a little. <I don't think
I could stand to be that odango atama's onee.> Even if she did feel
deeply for her friend and princess. "No... it's just. All of us care
about her. She's very important."
The Seaduck's cockpit grew silent except for the rumbling of the
engines outside. After a few moments, Baloo commented more to himself,
"Sure is pretty up here today." The gibbous moon could already be seen,
rising an iridescent blue from the east while the sun blazed an orange
ball of fire in the west. "Lots of clouds too."
"Great cloudsurfing weather."
"Got that right, Kit. No pirates 'round neither." The large bear
looked back at Rei and smiled. "So are you up for some surfing?"
"ME?!? Are you nuts?!" Even as Rei said this, she could feel
something. It was almost like a longing to have the clouds rushing
beneath her feet. Pulling out the airfoil, she flicked it open and
regarded it, as she had many times before. "Like I'm going out on this
flimsy thing."
She and Ami had discussed the airfoil earlier. Ami did pronounce
it sound... in theory. She wasn't sure about all the physics involved
but assumed that since this was an animated universe, the laws of
physics were different. Therefore, cloudsurfing could be a reality.
Nevertheless, all the lion's reassurances still didn't make Rei fell any
better.
Ami turned her attention away from the navigational maps for a
moment to remark, "I agree. That activity would be very dangerous.
Unquestionably, Usagi would not approve."
"Well, I'm not going anyway," Rei remarked but she sounded
doubtful. <I'd get killed doing something baka like that.>
"Good thing you're not, Rei," Baloo remarked.
"Why not?"
"Well, you ain't Kit." The big bear sounded slightly annoyed at
this. "'Sides, you're a girl. You wouldn't want to break a fingernail or
nothing."
"Oh yeah?!" Rei huffed. <I'll show that overstuffed teddy bear!>
"Now, Li'l Britches, don't do nothing stupid," Baloo was
lecturing, "I didn't mean nothin' by it. But you ARE a girl. Ya told me
so yourself."
Kit scowled slightly and stated, "I'll prove to you that girls
aren't all weak."
<Oh baby!> Baloo thought, <I've really stirred up a hornets'
nest.> He had thought Kit could be bullheaded but Rei appeared to even
more stubborn. "Now, look here. Wildcat's right. You..."
"Papa Bear, I'm not going to do anything fancy," Rei assured
him, "I wanna go. Please?" Baloo looked towards the mechanic for help
but Wildcat was busy doing some calculations. Turning back, he stared at
the cub for a long moment. It was easy to forget that it wasn't some
stranger looking at him but his trusted navigator.
"Okay, kid, hit the mist."
"Thanks Baloo," Rei said and hugged him before running out of
the cockpit.
The sprawling clouds lay just below her feet. Occasionally, Rei
could see patches of dark ocean rolling far below. It was scary. Her
main concern though was not the possibility of plummeting to her death.
Instead, she was praying she wouldn't make a complete idiot out of
herself.
"WA-HOOOO!!!!" she sang as she drifted to the left slightly
before reversing her course. <Sugoi! This is so cool!> It felt like she
had been doing this for years. Her feet were firmly planted upon the
silver airfoil while her paws grasped the handle of the towrope. No
matter how confident she felt, Rei wasn't going to hang on with only one
paw.
<No wonder you like this, Kit. I'm really gonna miss it.> It was
quite exhilarating to be this high up. <Stepping off the plane was the
hardest part,> the cub decided. "Hi Wildcat!" she shouted to the lion.
The mechanic was staring at her dubiously. Grinning like an idiot, she
released one paw long enough to wave before returning it to the relative
safety of the handle. She chuckled as Ami shook her head and wandered
deeper into the plane.
Rei was elated. Here, she was in control. The feeling reminded
her of transforming into Sailor Mars.
It seemed only a short time later that she realized that she was
being reeled in. For some reason, she felt very disappointed. Once
safely abroad the Seaduck with the massive cargo ramp closed behind her,
Rei ran into the cockpit and demanded, "Whatcha do that for, Baloo? I
was having' a great time!"
Baloo chuckled. "I know, Kit, 'cept we're almost home. Can't
have you surfin' through those cliffs. Ol' Baloo might be good but I
wouldn't want ta take chances, 'specially at night." He pointed out the
window.
"Almost... home?" the cub questioned in disbelief and looked out
of the cockpit window. Her mouth swung open and she stared. The Cape
Suzette cliffs appeared in the distance against the twilight sky. "I was
out there that long?!"
"You're a natural, kid. Sure you haven't done this a'fore?"
Baloo questioned with a grin.
"I'm sure, Papa Bear... And it was great!" <I've gotta do it
again!> Turning to the lion, she added, "You should try it, Ami."
"As Wildcat would put it, `Like no way, man!" Both bears
started to chuckle at this.
Usagi glanced up from her paperwork at the now familiar sound of
the Seaduck. Smiling slightly, she turned back to her work until the
door opened. "Hello, boys, how'd did it go?"
"Smooth flying, Beckers," Baloo replied, "Fine night for
flyin'."
"The food was good too!" Rei added. "Where's Molly?"
"She's upstairs playing," Usagi replied. Rei turned and ran up
the stairs. "So everything's worked out okay?"
"Yeah man... Usagi," Ami replied.
"Yes sir-ee," Baloo reaffirmed while flopping down into his easy
chair, "Wildcat weren't so bad." He gave his boss a toothy grin and
continued, "I hate to ask this but what's on for tomorrow?"
Usagi gave him a shocked expression before laughing slightly.
"In-town runs, Baloo."
"No flyin'?" the big bear whined.
"Well, you know we have a pick-up in two days. You could do that
tomorrow."
"I was hopin' you'd forget about that one, Becky. I hate going
to Themberia. Somethin' always happens to me. I think ol' Spiggy's got
it in for me."
Rei was glad that Usagi hadn't questioned where she was going.
After coming out of the bathroom, she glanced over the railing and saw
that the "adults" were deep in discussion about something. <Good, now
they won't get nosey!> Turning, she wandered over to the spare bedroom
that Wildcat slept in on occasion. Inside, she could see "Molly" sitting
on the bed nearly asleep; Lucy was sitting on the bed beside the little
girl.
"What are you doing, Molly?" Rei asked the golden cub.
Chibi-Usa gave a start and slid from the bed. Giving Rei a
sheepish grin, she admitted, "Hi Kit. I'm readin' Lucy a story."
Rei raised an eyebrow. "Really? You looked like you were
asleep."
"Was not!" the child protested while getting up from the floor
and back onto the bed.
"OK... What story were you reading her?" Rei asked. She scowled
a little when the child held up a comic book. "You were snooping around
my room?"
"You ain't gonna tattle, are ya?"
Rei walked over to the bed and said, "I won't... But only if you
tell me why you didn't tell me that Usagi wasn't my mom!"
"Huh?"
"Why didn't you guys tell me that Ms. Cunningham isn't Kit's
mom?"
"Kit knows that," the little girl answered matter-of-factly.
"Why would ya think that?"
"Because YOUR mom said I was her son!" Rei could feel her temper
rising. "So Rebecca isn't Kit's mom?" The golden cub shook her head.
"Okay if that isn't true, then why did you tell Cindy that you were my
little sister?"
"'Cuz, silly, sometimes Molly thinks of Kit as a big brother."
Rei had been a lot nicer to her lately. "I guess that's like Mommy too,
Rei-honey. She likes Kit an awful lot." Rei sighed, covering her face
with her paws. What was she going to tell Cindy?
The City of Cape Suzette was settling in for the night. Most
businesses were closed for the day. The streets weren't as busy as they
had been only a few short hours before. The Moon sat in a midnight blue
sky; the stars twinkled like diamonds.
At Higher for Hire, Rei was trying to read some of Kit's comics
but she kept being distracted by her thoughts of what she was going to
tell Cindy. Baloo was listening to the radio and Ami was looking over
some of Wildcat's other unread books.
The kitchen in Rebecca Cunningham's apartment was aglow with a
mixture of streetlights from outside and overhead lights. It seemed to
enlarge the already spacious kitchen. Tenderly, Usagi hummed to herself
as she waited for the kettle to boil. <I'm glad the boys had a good
flight.>
After getting herself some tea, she walked back into the living
room. Placing her cup carefully down on the coffee table, she walked
down the hall and quietly pushed open the door to her daughter's room.
<Mamo-chan, you'd be so proud of me,> she complimented herself
as she glided across the carpeted floor to the bed. Bending down, she
gave the golden cub a gentle kiss before turning and walking back from
the room. <Me and Chibi-Usa are getting along great.>
Usagi thought it must be hard for Rebecca to raise Molly all by
herself. She didn't know what she would do if something happened to
Mamoru. <I want to go home soon.> But a spot deep in her heart said she
didn't want to go either. She didn't want to watch Chibi-Usa leave. <She
has to, though.>
Sitting down on the couch, she picked up her teacup but didn't
drink from it. Instead, she sat there like a statue and stared off into
at a point off in the distance. The bearess was looking, trying, to see
what the future would hold.
