No flame, but you do have it backwards. Tatewaki carries a bokuto.
In the third episode of the anime, just before he gives the flowers to
onna-Ranma, it's made relatively clear.
Viz translates it as "Hey, what happened to that wooden sword of
yours?" but if you listen to what the seiyuu is saying, it's quite
clear that it's 'bokuto'. Kuno then replies that he doesn't need it,
and HE says bokuto as well.
