NOTES
Many thanks to Rai for the C&C that lead to this
revision! What are the excuse of the rest of
you? Hmm? Anyway, 'nantaru' means 'what??' but
is an expression of anger or surprise. It's
a bit on the vulgar side... but this is Isamu
we're talking about. ~_^
CHAPTER THE THIRD: THE BATTLE IS JOINED
Myung Fang Long sighed as she set the stylus
down. She looked up from her polished cherry desk
to look at City 10. The holographic equipment
mounted inside of the huge dome was projecting
an image of a cloudless day. During combat, the
dome was lowered and secured to protect the 300,000
colonists. Usually, shuttles would be running
from the City 10 to the Boardwalk or to the Vegas,
the two main off-ship sources of amusement.
But the 10 was in a perpetual state of
alertness. The last thing the military people
wanted was for the aliens to capture a shuttle full
of civilians. So they were stuck here, which wasn't
terrible. City 10, after all, had all the perks
and modern comforts of any metropolis back on
Earth. But being stuck in a relatively small space
could lead to serious cases of cabin fever.
"Man, she's even beautiful when she's
thoughtful."
Myung turned from the expansive view
and smiled at her fiancee. His uniform was
completely out of order, but it was that
ruffled look that Myung loved.
"Arigato, Isamu-chan. What brings you
by my door?"
"Just wanted to drop by. Also, I'm
worried about Battou. He hasn't been the same
since the last battle."
"He's lost the only people he spent time with
on any regular basis," Myung said thoughtfully as
Isamu crossed the carpeted floor towards her,
smirking in that way that drove her crazy. "What?"
"Just thinking about how sexy you are." His
face fell. "Still... I can't get the Battou
problem out of my mind. What are we gonna...?"
His comm buzzed at that moment. Sighing he
blew a kiss to his fiancee as he picked it up.
"Yeah?"
"Captain," Lucy said, a little breathless.
"Lieutenant Tenmou stole a Valkerie from the
landing bay!"
"N...nantaru!?"
"One of the ordinance officers was doing
inventory and noted a VF-11 Thunderbolt and its
option armor were missing! And Lt. Tenmou
wasn't at morning mess!"
"Get a channel open to that Thunderbolt,
double-quick!"
"H...hai!"
Battou shut off the comm. "Kuso..."
"What?"
"I'm afraid Battou might do something
stupid..."

The White Rose resembled a sunflower more
than a rose. Naturally, this was because it
was a Sunflower-class agricultural platform.
Now atop the White Rose stood the imposing form
of a fully-armored VF-11 Thunderbolt.
Within the cockpit, Battou Tenmou considered
all his options. He missed the Jijins terribly,
even though it had been less than 24 hours since
his death and her abduction. Leaving the
controls as they were, he folded his arms
over his chest and closed his eyes.
In the armored sections that encased the
Thunderbolt was more than enough explosives to
end his existence. And he had enough fuel to
carry himself far away from the fleet and any
civilians. But what would that accomplish?
The Crusader was gone and Battou wasn't sure
if he could fight effectively in another mecha.
Although the more time he spent in the VF-11,
the more he re-acclimated to it. It was,
after all, one of the fighters he'd trained
in. But when Doctor Jijin had offered him the
chance to fight in a melee-focused prototype,
he'd jumped at the chance.
But now, Hikari was dead. So was Makoto,
if she was lucky. Battou certainly would never
wish torture on anyone, especially someone as
sweet as Makoto... though he'd never been tortured,
the earlier part of his life was torture enough...
Rescue? Battou shook his head. If the
aliens operated anything like UN Spacy did,
only portions of their forces were sent at them
every time they attacked. Their HQ, where ever
it was, was more likely than not heavily guarded.
On top of that, he was just one warrior. Even if
he was...
The Breetai, the largest warship in the New
Macross 10 fleet, moved into view and obscured the
fleet, breaking Battou out of his reverie. The
White Rose was situated on the far side of the
fleet, closer to the nearest source of sunlight.
Battou's brooding grew deeper, thinking of the
thousands of micronized Zentraedi warriors walking
the decks of the battleship. He growled and
closed his eyes again, pushing thoughts on
Zentraedi from his already tortured mind.
Whatever he was going to do, he had better
decide soon, he thought. They would only let
him stand here so long... And then there were
the dreams he'd been having lately...

Arrtizo basked in his glory. Atop the new
mecha he himself had designed and built, he
thought back to the last few cycles. The
interrogation had been amusing. While precious
little information had been divulged, the
human woman's other reactions had been quite...
delicious. He sat with his long human legs
crossed, running over some of the more
particular specifications.
"My lord Prince?"
He looked up. Another member of the
royal family, a cousin, bowed to him.
"The Emperor and Empress have requested
your presence in the throne room at once."
"I'm busy."
"M... my lord?"
"I'm planning another attack and I am
making sure I will not die when I take Ebongold
into combat. Are the Guardians prepared?"
"I... I am sorry, sir, b- but...Your
mother... told me to inform you that she will
peruse your thoughts from afar if you do not
appear before them."
Arritzo's head snapped up, gray eyes
burning with anger.
"WHAT."
"A... apparently at our stage of evolution
the females can and have developed abilities
related to the mind... just as our bodies
have become superior..."
In the next half-heartbeat, Arritzo had
rushed his cousin and knocked him halfway
across the hangar bay with one blow. The other
royal screamed in terror as he plunged to
the deck. Arritzo sighed and smiled, his
eyes fluttering shut. Ah, the power of the
more evolved form.
"What happened? Are you well?"
He looked down at the diminutive workers
and the Soldier-type that was their supervisor.
"He fell. Dispose of it."
Of course, this 'accidental' death of a
family member might mean Arritzo's timetable
needed to be moved up...
In another part of the WarWorld, Princess
Lysstza poured over the information gleaned
from the human woman. While precious little
had attracted her brother's attention, a great
deal of it was of interest to Lysstza. In
particular, the connection to two other humans;
"Hikari" and "Battou."
"Hikari" was, apparently, deceased. He
had been one of the humans' top scientists, and
was more than likely on the now-cripped science
vessel Lysstza herself had bombed. Upon
explaining that "Hikari" was her "husband,"
Lysstza had asked about the concept.
"Is it like a mate?" Lysstza had asked.
"More than that," the human woman had
replied, out of breath from another round of
torture (which turned Lysstza's innards). "He
is my best friend in all the universe. He
laughed when I laughed and consoled me in
times of sorrow. It is always more than
simply mating..."
"What more is there?" Arritzo had
asked coldly, shrugging. "This is meaningless
to me. So is whoever these... humans... are."
"Hold, brother. Lieutenant Jijin, you
mentioned two humans. Who is... 'Battou'?"
The human had smiled. Even with her red
blood on her face and lines of pain around her
eyes, Lysstza had been haunted by the peace
and beauty in that human visage.
"He's a better warrior than both of you
put together. His sword always strikes true."
Arritzo had laughed. "That fool? I
folded him around one of my slugs."
"He is very hard to kill, Your highness,"
Jijin had said quietly. "Now that you have
taken both my husband and myself, he will not
forgive you..." Her eyes had fluttered shut.
"I see my dear friend Battou carrying a flaming
sword of vengeance... zankoku na tenshi..."
The Prince just shrugged.
"Rubbish. She's delirious. We'll continue
this once she's healed a bit from this round."
That had been hours ago. While her brother
had been quick to dismiss Lt. Jijin's statements,
Lysstza was still shaken. The fact that the
translation devices had no idea what "zankoku
na tenshi" meant only added to her anxiety.
Lysstza's brows had furrowed. Where had
the strength come from? She had called Arritzo
'your highness' more to drive home the fact that
she is not noble-born instead of honoring him.
While this normally would have enraged her
brother, he'd stayed calm... very calm...
until later, that is..
And... when he had mentioned that he'd shot
the mecha "Battou" flew, Lysstza had recalled
something from the battle. When he'd shot that
mecha, for a moment, she'd felt an unfathomably
strong fighting spirit, one that
rivaled the bravest of Zarritzen warriors...
and for a split-second she'd seen a pair
of intense, almost glowing, blue eyes, that
even now sent waves of cold down her spine...
~ * * * * * * * ~
Heero Yuy was up to his neck in trouble.
For some reason, he was having incredible
difficulty getting the UN Spacy transformation
circuitry to meld with the inner workings of
Wing Zero. It was looking more and more like
the damage he'd sustained during the shift
in dimensions had robbed him of the Neo-Bird
Mode. But everything else was intact, and
the Spacy scientist Yang Newman had ideas
concerning boosting the power of his already-
devastating twin buster rifle, despite the
reports all the Gundam pilots had given of
its power and the damage it had done during
the battle with the White Fang.
Heero personally didn't care.
They had been so close. So close to
finishing the battle with the White Fang. It
had almost been over, and he was almost
free. And now... now he was forced to walk
the path of the warrior again. Then again,
it was all he really knew...
"You look like I did an hour ago."
Heero looked up. Zechs Merquise, dressed
in a simple dark blue pressure suit, kneeled
by the access panel in Wing Zero's torso. He
was looking with concern at Heero.
"I don't follow."
"You're wondering why you're being forced
to walk the path of a soldier again."
"..."
"I can see it, Heero. Because I was
wondering the exact same thing. I assumed
control of the White Fang to bring an end to
war on Earth, so soldiers could find peace at
last. Now we're stuck here in the middle of a
war that we had no part of and are being forced
to fight in it."
"..."
"You care about my sister, don't you?"
"...Maybe."
"It's all right, Heero. There's no shame
in admitting your feelings. But I also
understand wanting to hole those feelings
away in order to focus on the battle ahead."
"Zechs. I'm still gonna kill you."
"For now, Heero, let's put our duel
aside and resolve it later. In a fencing match,
or in our mobile suits, but not now. Now
we have to protect those we love."
Heero hated to admit it, but Zechs made
sense. And he expressed no fear in Heero's
intention to kill him. He looked down and
hauled his body out of the access shunt,
again marvelling at the ability of the
dark flight suit Quatre had given him aboard
the Peacemillion to move with him.
"Fencing match. One blow."
Zechs smirked.
"My pleasure."
Zechs and Heero shook hands for the first
time as the alarm klaxon blew.
~ * * * * * * * ~
Golden-brown hair...
Emerald green eyes...
A vivaciousness and love for life that
rivaled Makoto Jijin...
The shrill tone of the proximity alarm
jolted Battou out of his meditative state.
Several fighters from Skull Squadron blazed
past his position, probably called away from
their patrol circuit. He had never seen
the beginning of an alien attack this close...
There was a green glow near the Breetai,
that blossomed into a scintillating disk that
resembled the photos Battou had seen of
black holes. From it came a formidable
force of mecha. There were the Gold and
Silver suits, and the Crimson transformable
ones that tried to act like the Valkeries...
but they only had two modes and seemed to
have trouble shifting. There was a new
model as well. It stood taller than
the Gold mecha but looked leaner, and
generally meaner, encased in black
armor. And there was...
Battou swallowed. It was bigger than
the black ones. It resembled the Gundams,
at least superficially. Angular wings
sprang from its back, and its blood-red
eyes flickered. A cannon even larger than
the one that had torn the Crusader apart
was held in dark hands. It turned
toward the White Rose, and somehow,
Battou knew the look. It wasn't just
a similar weapon...
It was the same pilot.
"Fine," he whispered. "Come get me, then."
Lysstza double-checked her instruments as
soon as they completed the Gate-jump. It was
as Arritzo had planned. She rallied the
Soldiers and Guardians with her to assault
their main force. Meanwhile, Arritzo
gathered the fast Shifters around his newly-
created Ebongold and took off towards the
secluded ship that, according to the little
information they got from Jijin, was
responsible for most of the sustenance consumed
by the humans. The human mecha were already
moving to defend against her force.
Then she saw it. Alone, atop the
objective of her brother. A heavily armed
and armored human mecha. She focused on it
for a moment...
The cries of rage and bloodlust from
her troops, inspired by Ap-Orrid moving into
battle in the form of a taloned flying beast,
drowned out her gasp.
Those were the eyes... the eyes that
haunted her... the eyes of that pilot...
"Are we ready?"
The question came from Quatre as the Gundams
assembled on the deck of the New Macross 10.
Isamu looked over his shoulder, circling the
10 in Skull One, as the affirmative reports were
filtered back to him. He remembered their names,
as well.
Sandrock, ready.
Wing Zero, ready.
Altron, ready.
Heavyarms, ready.
Deathscythe Hell... ready.
Epyon... took off already.
"Well don't just stand there," Isamu barked,
"follow him!"
And with that, the Gundam pilots joined the
fray.
Trowa didn't get very far before some Ebon
suits waylaid him. He opened up with the beam
gatlings, and while his scanners read their armor
as something like Gundanium, his shots tore them
up pretty easily. He smiled a bit.
"Disappointing... perhaps one of you could
have given me peace..."
Wufei growled as Altron shot towards the
Gold suits. Two of them moved to intercept him,
knife-like blades that registered as Gundanium
springing into their hands like switchblades.
He lit his trident and met them, cutting one
of them open easily and spinning to face the
other.
"Is that all you got?" he demanded. "I've
seen low-level Oz soldiers with more balls!"
Heero and Zechs paced each other as
they moved into battle. The competiton was
silent as they cleaved into the enemy. A
dark shape darted past them and an active
cloak was flung open. Duo ignited his scythe
and scowled.
"The God of Death has judged you alien scum
and FOUND YOU WANTING!" he cried. Rage boiled
in him and he let out a howl of battle as he
attacked.
Across the battlefield, Dorothy Catalonia
saw Deathscythe Hell move into action and shifted
her Sturmvogel to jet mode, moving in his
direction. While it might not be needed, or even
wanted, she was going to give him her protection.
It was a concept she wasn't terribly familiar with,
but no one ever accused Dorothy of being unwilling
to learn.
Quatre found fighters flanking him as he
moved deftly through the enemy formation. His mind
raced, calculating potential movements and counter-
tactics. He was impressing himself... as well as
the New Macross brass. Of course, he didn't know
that yet. What he knew, what he could feel, was
Dorothy's concern for Duo. And he felt Duo's rage
and sorrow. He tried to shut out those feelings,
silently asking Sandrock for strength. His Gundam
didn't disappoint him, almost aiming the beam
machine gun for him and coaxing him into pulling
the trigger.
Lucrezia Noin gunned down one of the Ebon
suits and saw Epyon turn towards the new commanding
mobile suit. A shiver passed through her body and
she turned from the battle to follow, despire Lt.
Zillah's screamed protests.
"I promised I would be with him," she whispered,
"and I will. No matter the cost."
Zechs Merquise felt something he'd never felt
from Epyon before as he swept towards the battle.
It was an uncomfortable, odd feeling, generated by
the black and gold mobile suit that awaited him.
Fear.
Prince Arritzo grinned as the Ip-yonn facsimile
came towards him. He shifted to battle mode,
levelled his rail cannon, and fired. Ip-yonn dodged
and sliced the weapon in twain with the vicious
energy sword. Arritzo let the rail cannon fall away
and crossed his arms. When he brought them down,
claws forged of the purest sample of the new
alloy and honed to the same monomolecular edge as
the enemy sword he'd captured sprag from Ebongold's
wrists, three from each arm.
He tore into Ip-yonn, screaming "Now you die,
you false god, and bring me the glory worthy of the
future Zarritzen Emperor!" Metal screeched against
metal, conduits snapping and cracking, coolants and
other fluids bleeding off into the void. It was a
battle of Gods, and the Zarritzen loved it. The raw
power and speed of Ip-yonn was no match for the rage,
strength and prowess of Ap-Orrid. Even Princess
Lysstza had to admit she was impressed.
Then she turned towards the armored mecha and
the Shifters moving towards it at high speed...
"My prince!"
The cry was choked off from the Shifter squadron
leader. Arritzo frowned. He had his gauntlet around
Ip-yonn's throat, claws poised to strike the head off.
He checked his rear-views. Wasn't the agricultural
ship destroyed yet?
What he saw chilled his azure blood.
Moving more easily than should have been possible
considering the armor, the single opposing mecha
used the huge rotary cannon in it's hands to tear
apart Shifter after Shifter. The sound of the cannon
barking mixed with the screams of his men boiled the
Prince's blood. Cannons on the armored mecha's shoulders
added to the volume of fire and Arritzo's rage.
Lysstza's blood, on the other hand, quickened at
the sight of such bravery. For a human to show such
audacity in battle against such insurmountable odds
was uncanny. It was unheard of for anyone to so
feircly oppose the Zarritzen. Lysstza blinked, confused,
then felt a feeling of intrigue. Where did this
man draw the strength from? She brought her
Leader to a halt, closed her eyes and concentrated...
Lt. Jijin.
A man that must have been her husband.
A cold face, peering through a liquid.
A handsome human, associated with command.
A yellow symbol on a black field, and the word
"Zentraedi."
The crippling of the science vessel.
Her brother's suit, looking triumphant.
A sword shattering.
A heart breaking...
"All remaining Guardians, move to my location!
Destroy that insolent human!"
The rallying cry of her brother snapped Lysstza
out of her visions. She was panting, exhausted, her
body soaked in some liquid secreted by her own pores.
But... Zarritzen didn't have this kind of reaction...
to anything...
The Guardians responded, moving away even
as the dark winged mecha and the one with
dragons for arms followed with weapons blazing.
Firing some mini-missiles from it's backpack
towards the remaining Shifters, the armored
mecha turned and saw the Guardians coming.
He alighted on the agricultural ship as the dark
suits lifted their weapons.
"Now you die," Arritzo hissed.
And again, the human surprised him.
One by one, the armored panels popped open. Under
each was a cluster of missiles. There was a moment of
pause, and both Arritzo and Lysstza could *feel* the
pilot immersed in the power he suddenly held. Then that
pilot let fly with over 100 rockets that covered the
space before him in cleasing fire. They launched
sucessively, the staccato sound ringing in Arritzo's
ears through the feedback speakers. He jumped back,
letting the recoils propel him, as Guardian after
Guardian met with a firey end. There had been a dozen
of them! Against ONE! One human!!
"We should capture him, brother," she said, trying
to hide her true motivation.
"Capture?" he growled in reply. "You can capture
his innards after I scatter them across space!"
With that, Ebongold leapt toward the armored foe,
who turned to face him...
Now he'd done it. He'd pissed the guy off.
Battou smiled as his missile bays registered as
empty. As the bad boy grabbed his big boom-stick
and pointed it at him, he jettosined the armor
and jumped. The free-floating armor plates were
blown away as he shifted to jet mode and got distance.
He flew towards the mostly white Gundam... Wing Zero.
"Need a melee weapon," he radioed.
The pilot of Wing Zero was quick. He reached
into his shoulder and pulled a beam saber free.
Thanking Yang Newman for the general tech reports
on the Gundams' technology, Battou shifted to
soldier mode, flying backwards. He held out his
hand and the accurate throw of Wing Zero put the
beam saber in his hand. He lit it, and to his
satisfaction, the golden-black mecha dropped
the cannon and unsheathed his nasty claws. He
parried the incoming blow to his head, surprised
that metal claws stood against a laser sword... the
claws must have some kind of sheild around them.
Even as he thought this, the other set of claws
tore off his arm and the sheild attatched to it.
Battou kicked, propelling himself back from the
suit. Cursing himself for not being fast enough,
he raised the saber to block again as the claws
moved towards his cockpit...
In that moment, Lysstza could feel her heart
tearing in half. She loved her brother. But
the rage and power he felt, that which was driving
him, was born of evil. Even looking in his
direction was beginning to make her flesh crawl.
Something about Arritzo had become anathema to
her.
She closed her eyes again, and felt the
righteous anger from the pilot of the other
mecha. It was a seething mess. But there was
purity in his heart, a purity Arritzo had lost...
or maybe he'd never had it...?
Her eyes flew open. She saw Ap-orrid,
locked in combat with the nameless mecha.
She felt the evil rage in one and the righteous
vengenace in the other.
Suddenly, Princess Lysstza knew her course.
A flash of gold obscured Battou's vision. There
was an audible pause, as the only remaing Gold and it's
big, nasty brother faced off. Then Battou saw his
cannon was in the Gold's hands. The weapon howled
and the black-gold mecha shot back. It grabbed its
boom-stick and started firing. Battou dodged, as
did the other Gold, and they were suddenly moving
like old wingmates, much to Battou's shock. Then
he felt it again. The vivaciousness...a love of
life that wouldn't die without a fight.
A slug tore into the Gold suit. As it shot
back and Battou moved to follow, he saw on his radar
that the Gundams and Skull Squadron were all moving
to his position. He lost track of the battle as
he watched the Gundams work in concert. That's when
the slug hit him in the back. Luckily, it only
took off his head and shut down his controls. He
sealed his pressure suit and popped the hatch.
Kicking with all his might, grabbing the
emergency propulsion kit, he moved towards the
dying Gold. Already it was starting to spark.
He strapped on the extra backpack, stepping
into the kit's stirrups, and grabbed a
handhold of the Gold. He found the hinge for the
cockpit and cut it open with a single stroke of a
laser torch.
A humanoid body was in the command seat,
unconsious. He was surprised that the pilot
was humanoid, moreso that it was female.
He drew his boot-knife and slashed the
restraining straps away. Hugging her close
to him, he kicked away from the self-detonating
Gold and reached around her to his shoulder,
to the control unit of the emergency pack.
Murmuring a prayer, he pressed the switch.
The jets caused his calves to shake, and
they were shot backwards like a missile as
the Gold went nova. The explosion consumed
what was left of the Thunderbolt, but they
were safe. Battou turned to see the black-
gold leader and what was left of his force
were gone.
He kicked his legs down, then back,
killing his momentum as the fuel gave out.
He finally let himself breathe a sigh of
relief. He was drifting in space with the
alien woman cradled in his arm when he took
the time to look at her more closely. She
had a dark faceplate down covering her
face, as he waited for the S.A.R. to arrive
he decided to lift it gently.
The very human, very beautiful face
of the unconscious alien surprised and
shocked Battou. Especially when her body
shifted in his arms and a lock of golden-
brown hair fell across her features.
Her eyes fluttered open, and Battou found
himself falling into a sea of green...
She couldn't stop it. The moment she
beheld the soft yet strong almost glowing
blue eyes of her rescuer, the vision of the
past had flooded from her mind. She was
reliving the death of Lt. Jijin. And she
knew the human was watching.
"More! Give me more information!"
She writhed on the table of pain.
Arritzo's lips were pulled back in a grin
of macabre amusement, manipulating the
controls. Lysstza clutched her head; she
would have begged her brother to stop if
she could have formed the words. But
she felt every lance of pain Makoto felt,
saw the bursting dark light that consumed
the doomed human. Saw the visions of
her husband and the human called Battou.
"More, bitch! More secrets, human
whore!"
Lysstza knew it wasn't secrets her
brother wanted. He wanted her to suffer,
to feel pain. Even if she gave up every
specification of the human's flagship, he
would still torture her to death. This
is where she'd felt the evil for the
first time. She'd felt it again, later,
watching Ap-orrid and Ip-yonn, but she'd
seen it here.
For the first time, Lysstza had wept.
"Scream for me! Feel my power,
you human insect! SCREAM!"
Makoto Jijin screamed.
Lysstza screamed.
Battou stood in Jijin's mind.
Glaring. Bright flaming sword in hand.
Dark wings fluttering in a silent breeze.
Vengeance.
Death.
*zankoku na tenshi*
Her consciousness snapped off. But
as she felt herself fade, she felt him
falling with her... and her last
conscious act was to try and wrap her
arms around him...
Isamu drifted by the scene in Gerwalk.
The S.A.R. people gently pushed Battou and
the alien towards the shuttle.
"They're both all right but
unconscious. The alien seems to have
normal human vital signs."
"Interesting. Put her in an ICU with
guards."
"Roger."
"Captain Dyson?"
He turned. Quatre floated nearby,
several Thunderbolts near him like an honor
guard. Apparently, the boy had quite a
mind for tactics...
"Yes?"
"Is everything all right?"
"Hai. We lost less people this time,
thanks to you Gundam pilots."
"I'm glad we could help. What... who is
that with Battou?"
"Gets me, Quatre. Let's head back to
the 10."
Who indeed? Isamu asked himself as he
shifted to fighter mode. Did things just
get better...
...or a whole lot worse?
