A [yaoi] tag would have been greatly appreciated.
But that would have ruined the twist ending that was the whole point of
the thing.
It wasn't much of a surprise anyway, IMO. The avoidance of gender
pronouns and lack of any gender-specific description made it blatantly
obvious that the author was trying to pull a fast one.
True. It is pretty obvious, but not everyone reads that carefully, myself at
times as well. It can catch you off-guard if you're not paying attention.
Frankly, I have to wonder what the point of stories like this is.
Actually it was a joke concerning the title. This was just a little thing
spawned solely from some general conversation on crappy lemons on the FFIRC
late one night. Someone mentioned one by the name of 'Enter the Phoenix' ,
which I thought would have been amusing as an obvious lemony word play with
a male Ranma and a Mount Phoenix character. Kiima is obviously too simple
and easy to use, and since it's supposed to be in the vein of bad lemons
anyway, that leaves Saffron to go with a brief misdirection ploy when using
the title.
It
doesn't seem all that shocking or audacious to me that an author can
depict two more or less randomly-chosen characters having sex.
Oh, now I see what you, and probably quite a few others, were thinking. No,
that wasn't the 'point' of the fic. The whole idea/joke revolves around the
title and what it's supposed to mean. It's not intended as a 'mere' display
of two characters in an unlikley relationship. I wouldn't have used such
crude language if such was the case. I didn't bother mentioning it at the
end because I thought it rather obvious, though in hindsight I see that it
is hardly blatent. Sorry about that.
If the
story had done anything to make itself even remotely plausible, then you
might have something.
Nah. It wasn't meant to be plausible. Would have muted the word play/bad
lemon bit.
C'mon, DB, you're a good writer. You don't need to resort to this kind
of thing. ^_^
I'm not 'resorting' to anything. It was just a joke based on the title. I've
got enough 'serious' works, some quite dark, that I'm playing around with
that I need to do something frivolous to lighten my mood. This fit the bill,
though I will confess that I've found some of the reactions interesting, to
say the least. :)
