Yay! More CoaEG! Finally! I can't remember, did we wait longer for a new
Star Wars movie? Ah, whatever, this is far better than the Fandom Menace.
^_^

Elsewhere in Tokyo-3, red eyes looked up to the
night sky, as if searching the stars for a sign.
"Ia R'lyeh. Cthulhu fhtagn," Rei whispered.
She frowned.
[That's a bad thing, right?]
Part 18
Violator
[Tell me this is not a Spawn reference, please! ^_^]
The lounge singer had taken a break, and now a
recording of a lounge version of the Imperial March from
Star Wars was playing over the stereo system.
[Goddamn! Where does this bar get it's entertainment? I want the number of
that agency!]
Shortly after Lyn, the lounge singer, finally
returned, launching into 'Fly me to the Moon', Maya said
hesitantly, "Are you saying we're all the result of a
genetic experiment?"
[...and I don't s'pose you can hire Lyn H Taparote for weddings, can you...?
^_^]
Ritsuko shook her head. "Not exactly. From the
experiments in the records, it would seem that if not
restrained, Adam continually produces new life forms. Most
get eaten by Adam himself, but ones which escape can breed
with virtually anything, producing offspring that combine
their traits.
[<cough>Abhoth<cough>]
Such offspring possess superior survival
capabilities and become better able to adapt to
environmental changes and evolve faster. The result is that
such crossbred creatures win out in the evolutionary
struggle, and thus many species possess Adam as a very, very
distant ancestor."
[Oh. Okay, maybe Ubbo-Sathla then.]
"There is a continuing project called DAGON.
[Boy did I cringe when I first read that acronym in an earlier chapter.
Might I suggest flashing letters for the HTML version? ^_^]
'I was a teenage Deep One', the website proclaimed
in thirty six point New Times Roman.
[That's 'Times New Roman'. And it would have more visual impact in Arial
Black. ^_^]
From:
anna@Goethe.GNERV.ge Subject: Weird Stuff
[Another reader has pointed out the domain name and language things here,
but might point out that it should probably be NERVD, for NERV Deutschland.
Deutscher NERV or Deutsche NERV just doesn't sound right to me. And why the
first part of the domain name is Goethe is a mystery to me, unless you're
insinuating that Anna might play a somewhat Faustian role when she
arrives...]
Too many
Great Old ones count as drinkers of blood,
[Actually, the Star Vampires spring more immediately to mind than any Great
Old One. Though which GOO might use them as servitors, I don't know.]
but the great
lord of dreams is almost certainly either Cthulhu, who
haunted Father's dreams when I was little, or possibly one
of the major Elder Gods.
['Lord of dreams' = Hypnos. Plain and simple. Unless this is a reference to
the recent Dreamlands escapade...]
"'Lo, the trumpet sounds. The weaver's webs are rent, the
stars have fallen, the great beast is slain, no more to lap
up blood with many tongues, and even the great dreaming lord
of the deep has been cast down.
['dreaming lord of the deep', however, is a blatant reference to Cthulhu
himself.]
And so
their servant smiled contemptuously at them as they danced
and laughed at their joy, for he knew that all things
crumble, even them. But then he cast aside his mask of
reason for a time, and joined the dance, to rest himself
until it was time for further labors."
[Ah, I love the big N. Got a great personality, that guy. Or thing. Or
whatever.]
Langely's a bossy loudmouth,
[We have a return of this old gem, I see. ^_^]
"The constant exposure to LCL has heightened the
speed of their development," Ritsuko replied. She shifted
uncomfortably; Gendo had the only comfortable chair in the
office, though that wasn't the only reason for her
discomfort. "If it wasn't the only way to enable them to
control the ships, I'd recommend immediately ceasing any
contact with it."
[Ships? What ships? I don't think the EVAs really count as ships, so what is
this a reference to?]
Yui cursed at the book.
[That's probably not a good thing to do, considering this is a Mythos
book...]
[I wouldn't mind finding out what Asuka was talking to Taiki about, though
I'd guess at it being to do with her dream...]
"This is not a time for dissension am... aaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaa!!!!!" Touji felt Counselor Taiki be wrenched
loose from his grasp, then heard the man fall, thanks to
the screaming.
[Well, that's one way to ensure confidentiality from your counselor.]
"Rei, subdue it," Fuyutsuki said. "Whatever it is.
Everyone else, hurry up the stairs!"
[Sic 'em, Rex!]
[Actually, all through this scene, Rei is incredibly obedient and
subservient. The faithful hound comparison fits disturbingly well...]
No more keeping the phone in the
labcoat, she vowed. Too easily stolen by monsters.
She laughed a little at that,
[So did I. ^_^]
Fuyutsuki stepped inside. "MAGI, restore power.
This is Commander Fuyutsuki, Seraphim Clearance."
"Commander Fuyutsuki has been demoted to Guardian
Angel Clearance." MAGI calmly replied.
[I want a chart showiing different levels of Security Clearance in NERV!]
Shinji began drawing the Elder Sign on the door, after
borrowing the one Misato was wearing to use as a model.
[Doesn't the Elder sign require some form of spell or enchantment to be
effective? Wouldn't a drawn-on one be just so much chalk-dust? Or does the
very nature of the Children provide some form of enchantment by their
drawing it?]
"It takes from what it slays," Rei replied.
[And the winner of the 'Line With Most Dramatic Effect In A FanFic' is...]
"Dave? What are you doing, Dave?" the MAGI kept
repeating in unison. It was starting to drive everyone on
the bridge nuts, especially Maya,
[Snigger. ^_^]
Fuyutsuki punched three keys and MAGI shut up.
[Hmm, the arcane science of the volume control, huh? ^_^]
"Well, at least we know the security system to detect manual
tampering worked."
[The HAL dialogue was their alarm? And they say NERV staff have no sense of
humor...]
"I think a man with a gun to his head will say just
about anything," Fuyutsuki replied.
[Same goes for a man possessed by Y'golonac... although all this
shape-shifting stuff is sounding waaay Terminator 2 to me. ^_^]
Kaji didn't do anything but lie there. Dexter
knelt to inspect him. "He's pretty dead," Dexter said.
[Only pretty dead? ^_^]
They were too polite, though, not to bluntly state
that.
[Shouldn't that be 'too polite to bluntly state that'?]
And then the grating beneath his feet burst open,
and a long, pale pair of arms lunged upwards and grabbed
Fuyutsuki's legs, pulling him through the rough grating and
into the murky LCL depths below.
Touji reacted first.
"Oh fuck!"
[Oooh! <eats more popcorn excitedly> It's just like Aliens!]
Asuka was struck hard by a flying chunk of ice, giving
the Violator a momentary reprieve, only to be struck by
bolts of flame as Touji sent them flying from his hands.
"EAT HOT SHIT, ASSHOLE!" He yelled bravely. Touji
hadn't a clue how he was doing it, the power just seemed to
come from
_somewhere_ within, and he wasn't about to look a
gift horse in the mouth.
[Ah, but Mythos magic has harmful longterm effects on your sanity, boy...]
Touji fanned himself. "Is it hot in here or is it
just me?"
"Touji, why's your hand on fire?"
"It what? WHOA!"
A moment later, with no flaming appendages,
[Ah, the comedy never stops in the Mythos-ised world of Evangelion. Except
when the dark bits happen, of course. Then it just gets freaky.]
the
Children went forth and found their commander, and returned
to the bridge in triumph, but secretly wondered how much of
their humanity they were losing.
[Okay, well that was a little too summary for my liking.]
Except Shinji, who missed everything.
[Heh.]
She thought briefly of Ayanami.
A moment later she headbutted another pole. The two
men watching her glanced at each other nervously.
[I take that back. Even during the dark bits, there's still comedy. ^_^]
"The Burrower Beneath seems to have a good sense of
timing, anyway," Fuyutsuki said.
[So we'll be seeing Shudde M'ell next, then? Hopefully with some Cthonians
to help, and lots of bad 'Tremors' references too, I hope. ^_^]
[Well, this kicked ass, as usual. The buildup to the full effects of
absorbing the Violator's powers was handled exceptionally well, so much that
at first I could almost believe the story was going to turn into a WAFFy
lemon. Kaji's death was... interesting. As in the canon, I imagine it will
affect the characters more over time than it does at first.
One little thing: I'd like to know where you got the sexual aspect of
Y'golonac from, since in the original Campbell story, there was no obvious
sexual subtext at all. If you're aware of another source on Y'golonac, what
source is that?]
