Now, if I saw someone come along and suddenly "seize" Onna: Red Side or
Suiseiki and start continuing it without even so much as a word to me, or if
someone even came to me and asked if they could continue it in my stead, I
would be HIGHLY insulted. It's *my* work, not *their* work. It's *my* right
to continue it or abandon it as I please. Nobody but me has any right to say
what should and should not be done with my work.
Ah, yes. Just like when I decide to continue Ranma 1/2, Rumiko Takahashi
is the only person who has a say in her work...

Fanfiction is a derived work. If you are so impressed by a fanfic someone
wrote, then why not write a derived work of a derived work?
The issue here is with claiming to be the /same/ work. If I was upset
that RpM wasn't finishing, say, Surreal World, and choose to write a
fanfic about the household, so long as I indicate that it is just a fanfic
of Surreal World, and make no claim that it's part of the original, There
can be nothing wrong with that.
Because if you think there is, what are you doing writing fanfiction at
all?
My fanfics are MINE. His fanfics are his. That guy over there...well, he
sucks, but even his crap is still HIS crap. The very IDEA of what you are
proposing is worse than plagiarism. It's soul rape.
