well I have good news and bad news
good news I have a computer and net access
bad news computer is a 8088 with 512Kb of RAM
and net access is 10 bucks an hour
thus my fics which I don't have access to
dang it are going to be gathering dust until
I can put togther a computer to write them on
this will take about a thousand bucks though
and currently I'm unemployed so pretty well that leaves me
screwed for fic writing for quite a while or until I find a job
the rant
Fics that are so good that almost everyone has read them...
Hearts of Ice comes to mind.
Lines of Destiny as well.
there are some authors that write so well that many of us
wait on the edge of our seats for the next chapter,
but sometimes this can take months.
Now I'm not saying that this is a bad thing.
If the chapters are 100Kb+ a chapter and they are exceptionally
well written then they are well worth the wait.
The problem is not that they're slow writers or they are perfectionists.
The problem is readers and amateur fic writers like me
want more and some of us only can take up to a certain amount of waiting.
Krista Perry recently posted a Rant on her page about having quite a few
discouraging emails.
People we all want them to finish the next chapter. We want it done
yesterday usually but most of us can wait. Now I'm requesting that all
ffml'ers who wish to speed such writers along consider what their emails do
to the writers they send it to. Some of the writers like emails urging them
on.
It feeds their ego a bit, well most of them.
Then there are the discouraging ones. You know the ones that say (quoted for
Krista's rant)"Well, I was a fan, but because you've kept me waiting so damn
long for the ending, I'm going to write and tell you how pissed I am." These
can be so detrimental to an author.
It gets them thinking 'why should I write any more of this when this
[censored] little [censored] wants more'.
Please people if you're going to write the author tell them how much you
love their fic and 'please' can they write more. If you do that then they
may after checking their email write a few paragraphs or even a few
kilobites of fic.
If they do this maybe once or twice a week. Then every month or so they
sometimes feel guilty that they haven't been writing more due to all the
nice emails. As one ffml'er once said 'abscence among fanfics doesn't make
the heart grow fonder it forms lynch mobs'.
This may be due to the fact that most of the good authors are so SLOW! Now
this is not due to any fault of theirs. RL can be a pain in the reality.
This leads me to my final words.
All of you out there writing fics write more. make time to write more
write while eating supper. while checking email. but write.
thank you for your time
