"Smoke signals?"
"Yep."
"But, uh, how?"
"How what?"
"Well, uh, you know. Smoke signals?"
"I'm not seeing the problem."
"All right. Your computer is probably the most advanced one currently even
in existance, right?"
"Probably. There's a significantly non-zero chance it's not, mind you, but
I would still give good odds it is."
"And it runs on smoke signals?"
"Well, binary is nothing more than ons and offs. Smoke signals are also
nothing more than ons and offs. I don't see the conflict."
Makoto stepped back and wordlessly opened and closer her mouth several
times, looking for all the world like a fish out of water. There was
something so obviously wrong with that bit of information she couldn't
even begin to say anything about it. She tried anyway. "Listen. Smoke
signals are usually really big. That computer is really small. I see a
problem."
"Oh come on." Ami patted her shoulder companionably and smiled. "You think
that with all the magic and technology of the Silver Millenium at my
disposal, we wouldn't be able to get around that little problem?" She
giggled.
Makoto firmly clenched her mouth shut. After all, she wasn't exactly a
computer buff so if Ami said the Mercury Computer worked based on smoke
signals, who was she to complain? "You are serious here? You promise me
you aren't just joking."
"Well, I admit, it isn't purely smoke signals."
Makoto sighed, relieved.
"There're bubbles involved too."
"Okay. You know what, don't tell me any more. I don't want to know."
Ami shrugged and fell into step beside her. A moment later, she smiled
again and giggled some more. Makoto didn't even want to know what was
going on this time.
