Titles. May I suggest "Through the Gate"? It's short, simple, and hints at
the story.
I'm curious what you would do with this. I don't seem to recall much room
for improvment left by the movie and the two sources don't really seem to
have a connection. If you can pull a plot out and don't rely on "Gee,
isn't this cool! A New crossover!" disease, you could have something.

Unfortunutly, it's been a while since I've seen the Neverending story and I
only saw each of the sequels once. But it seems to me that we only really got
hints about the politics of the other world. Is there anything below the
Princess/Queen/Whatever the young lady who resides in the ivory tower? You
could delve into that. Perhaps some Lord has opened a gate to what's left of
the Negaverse as part of a power bid?
Or if you don't want to drag in the Negaverse, perhaps the other
luck-dragons, or any types of dragons are advancing on the tower.
The point is, whatever is wrong, it's led the Princess, or perhaps that
scientist guy, the little elf dude who lives near those statures with the
eyebeams, to seek a power from Bastion's world. This threat is more then
Bastion and Atrayu(sp?) can handle. Or perhaps all they really need is Rei
and then you could have her on her adventure, with the others following along
in the book. But the key here is that you have to come up with something that
would require more then what they've had.
Another thought that just occured to me. Why not mirror the original movie?
Perhaps Rei is down about something and came across the book in a library.
Or, if you want to keep the shopkeeper, make him a little more mysterious.
Perhaps when Rei is in the shop and just sorta stays in her funk, he says he
has just the thing to cheer her up, goes into the back and comes back with
the book. That's when she starts getting the sense of something wrong,
especially as it seems to me that the book only falls into the hands of
people who truly need it or the hands of people that the other world need.
Anyways, the key point here is that it's something that requires the Senshi,
either one, or all of them in this other world, so your threat has to be
something that they can match.
You may also want to consider a rogue Kami, something Rei, as a shinto
priestess, would have experience in dealing with.
