On the Ranko matter, I seem to remember reading an article that
something like this is often done in sex changes in Japan. It's
been so long ago I don't remember any details.
I did not know this. Thank you for the information. Can anyone confim this?
***The last I read on it in 1997 was that they are not regular, not a
approved, and you cannot get a sex change operation. The Japanese Medical
Association would not approve it, even if some (many) doctors wanted to go
through with it. The whole name change, records, etc. may be on paper, but
they are kept in triplicate and somehow tracked very well. Changing any of
this information is a long and painful process, and among things that are
particular are changing your sex, and if you change your name and want to
use kanji they only accept Japanese readings of them. Korean and Chinese
readings cannot be used.
