If you are recieving this twice, the problem is on my end. There appears to be
a glitch, either with my e-mail serever and the ffml listserver or, what is
more likely I have done something wrong. In any case, I have sent this message
once, but it does not appear to have reached ffml.

She is a very shallow character.
[As used in much of the manga past Vol 5, yes. So far, I have
set my stories post Vol. 38. But Nabiki's outlook on life
appears to change dramatically as the manga series
progresses. She and Kasumi both fade into two-dimensons save
for an occasional blip in Kasumi's character. In Volume 22
for instance, Kasumi suggests that Genma might owe money to
the Madame of a bawdy house--at least in the Japanese
language version of it, she does. I haven't seen the Viz
translation.]
I wouldn't. But she -isn't- in the manga, and so presenting
her like she always has been is incorrect.

debate it endlessly. Treat the question as an opportunity to
expound upon your view of the matter. I'd be happy to read it

surprise me in the least to see her as a corrupt civil

but he's not overly bright otherwise, as is shown in plenty
of stories.

however, a very cunning warrior. It's a matter of how he
applies his intellect, just as it is with anyone else. Ranma
can think under pressure, not simply react on a gut level.

I didn't say it was "just fanfic convention", now did I? I
simply pointed out what Nabiki is and isn't. If you wrote
what she isn't, what you wrote is OOC. If you didn't, then
it's IC and I'd have no problems with it.

And I don't really care about "entertainment" as far as
inaccuracy goes. Jeffrey Hosmer's "Lies" was a very well-
written story, but since everybody in it is completely OOC, I
loathe it. Fanfic authors don't own these characters;
they are borrowing them. As such, they should treat them
with respect. If someone considers being careful to canon-
manga or anime-is too difficult for their artistic
sensibilities, then by all means they should make up their
own characters.
[What about a mix of the two? Several of the videos stay
fairly close to Takahashi's work, but inject things, such as
Nabiki's betting pool, that Takahashi did not include in the
manga. Others are so wildly wrong that they are pathetic.
Some introduce characters and situations that never appear in
the manga. Clearly, the screenwriters took certain liberties,
too many liberties in one or two episodes, with the manga
canon. OTOH, what is the standard that should be applied
here? The aesthetics, or the text? In my opinion, one must
give greater weight to the aesthetic issues involved. Copycat
Ken was not such a huge leap of the imagination, given the
Ranma1/2 stories in general, but for me he was a complete
flop entertainment wise. OTOH, a conniving Nabiki running a
gambling pool struck me as being a nearly perfect match, and
a great enhancement.]
