What's missing, I think, is some way for Akane in
this story to be identified as
a mutant as opposed to just some random super-type.
If you can establish that
there's some sort of distinctive feature that a
mutant (and no one else) has,
something that Akane and all the people who are
turning hostile to her can
recognize, then I think it would solve a lot of the
problems that people are
having with this.

eye-colour? (I don't want to get into the "hair"
thing. ^_^) {although if all mutants had red hair that
would introduce another sub-plot ^_*)
Perhaps all mutants have silver or gold eyes? You
could then have a prejudice against wearing dark
glasses. or at least make it suspicious. And mutants
could take to wearing tinted lenses.
Or perhaps something more subtle, like blood. And
schools could have random blood tests to look for
mutants. (and since no blood test is perfect . . .
in fact, statistically if you have a drug test that's
99.99 percent accurate, and it says you are NOT taking
drugs it's almost always right. BUT if the test is
positive for you taking drugs it's only got a 50/50
chance that you actually ARE taking drugs. I can do
the math for anyone that's really interested) BUT this
sort of thing could be used to add to the anti mutant
hysteria.
You could also have some people be afraid of
"catching" the mutations. Look at the hysteria over
HIV or homosexuality or even Harry Potter books. ^_^
