    I have no idea as to the entymology of the phrase, myself. (And, BTW,
I'm not American, I'm Canadian. Them's fightin' words, in some parts o' the
country ~_^) I really wanted to use "Oh my stars n' garters...", but I
figured it was over the top.

Probably a euphemism for "what the hell".  This is guesswork, but
the Hill/Hell similarity makes it seem likely (there are lots of other
phrases that feature similar sound-alikes).

    Oooh! The Devil-Doctor of Limehouse himself! Now _that_ would be a
crossover to beat all crossovers: The Shadow vs. Dr. Fu-Manchu!

Don't count on it.  Alan Moore's "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen"
featured a Fu-Manchu vs Moriarty battle, with Jeckyll & Hyde, the Invisible
Man, Captain Nemo, Allen Quatermain and Mina Murray (nee Harker) trying to
save the world (or at least England) from the twain ...  Now that was a
pretty "ultimate" crossover.  :)
