I know 'spamfics' are not usually subject to C&C but I have to
stick my nose in. It's been a long time since I read the
original book by Pierre Boule so I'm having to rely on my memory
of the movies.
So far as I can recall, the apes did not interbreed. Aside
from the possible genetic reasons, the class system was obvious.
Orangutans were the intellectual, spiritual and governmental
elite. They were also rather pedantic and seemed to wear
blinders all the time. Zaius in particular seemed to lean to
the belief that what is now has always been and there is no
other truth.
Gorillas were the soldiers, guards, 'police', security personnel
and all around tough guys.
Chimpanzees were the researchers, the gofers, the intellectual
grunt workers for the orangutans. And yet it was the chimps,
Cornelius in particular, who sought truth by investigating the
past even though that 'truth' might change the course of his
society's future.
Of course they weren't necessarily restricted to those roles,
but despite Cornelius's rebellion against Zaius while aiding
Taylor, as soon Taylor had ridden off Cornelius immediately
deferred to Zaius's wants and needs.
If it had been a strictly human story Cornelius would have told
Zaius to get f------ when Zaius demanded he be untied. But
Cornelius obviously knew his place in his society.
And as far as orangutans being "bigger wimps than the
chimpanzees", then why was it Zaius and not Cornelius or some
other chimpanzee who lead the army against the mutants in the
second film?
Of course, this being a story written by Mr. Gnu Be we have to
expect such silly statements.
Maybe if Mr. Be made the entire family chimpanzees with the
exception of Akane, who could be an adopted gorilla. I can see
an Anything Goes martial artist being a slender, quick-reacting
chimpanzee much better than a gorilla.
I just have problems picturing a Japanese society with apes
instead of humans. They wouldn't be Japanese, wouldn't have the
traditions or cultural imperatives. In fact, based on the last
couple of movies they wouldn't want to keep any of the 'human'
culture.
However, this would eliminate the Akane-Ranma match. Leaving a
Ranma-Nabiki or Ranma-Kasumi match. Unless, the Jusenkeyo curse
was the Spring of Drowned-PreWar Gorilla.
Male of course, but not as advanced as the modern-day gorilla
maybe not able to talk, but more than willing to respond to a
female gorilla in heat?
Now that may have possibilities . . . lemon . . . lime . . .
beastiality . . .
I'll let someone more experienced go there.
