D.B. Sommer summed it up in his recent post about fusions: what you need
is a story that goes beyond the mere setup of the characters in their
new circumstances. Being both an ardent Ranma 1/2 and Battlestar
Galactica fan, I would look at any Ranma fusion of this nature that does
not address this simple necessity with an extremely critical eye.
Write a story whose plot revolves only peripherally around the "rag-tag
fugitive fleet" angle, something very specific to the survival of the
Colonials. Keeping the Cylons around as the major baddies is good, but
write something where other humans play an important role as villains
and important Non-Colonial bystanders, because it will open up fresh
avenues for your character fusions. Shanghai'ing Ranma characters to
make them all into bloodless mechanical Cylons is a disservice to them
and your reader.
Do your best to preserve some of the flavor of the B.G. universe as you
write. Alongside the often contradictory terms for time and units of
measure, B.G. had some unique swear words, the Pyramid card game, and
customs. One of the things few run of the mill fans realize about the
series is its heavy Mormon influence on the show (Producer Gary Larson
is Mormon) and the use of Judeo-Christian-Islamic mythology alongside
the obvious Egyptian motif. (Those who remember the dreaded Count Iblis
from the series should note that 'Iblis' is the name for 'Satan' in the
Qur'an.)
