Battlestar Nerima
(Ranma 1/2 - Battlestar Galactica)
<SNIP>
I've finished Sukeban chp. 8
My Net connection is working (for once)
I am so full of warm-fuzzies I just have to comment.
^_^
{Everything is In My Opinion (IMO) ONLY}
Ideas are a dime (or yen) a dozen. It all depends on
what the writer does with them. My basic comment,
as always, is that the author should write what
she/he
wants to write. Write with joy and enthusiasm.
On a more practical level, don't try to be so
specific. Don't
try to force the elements of two series together.
In this case, the basic idea is to put the Nerima
crew
into
a "flee-for-your-life-from-the-BEM" story.
A nice basic space opera. If I were writing this,
I'd
set the
stage in terms of hardware, cultural conditions,
etc.
Then add
the BEM's, Nerima gang. Place over the fire of plot
conflict
and bring to a roiling boil. ^)^
I would NOT try to set things up as specifically as
in
this
summary. You need to give the characters freedom of
choice,
room to grow. Otherwise the story is too wooden.
I've got a little essay, complete with fanfic, in
the
works
to demonstrate this very point. For anyone
interested
in
my thoughts on writing fanfics be on the lookout for
Bedlam Fire. A little story that's my take on how to
write a Ranma/Green Lantern cross over (plus essay
on the evolution of the story)
BEM= Bug Eyed Monster for those too young to
remember Eando Binder, E.E.(Doc) Smith, H. Beam
Piper,
etc.
OK, for those with a nostalgia bent:
Sailor Moon/John Carter of Mars
Ranma/The Shadow
Hana Yori Dango/ Armaggedon 2419 by Phil Nowlan (the
original Buck Rogers novel)
Ranma/Adam Link, Robot
Sailor Moon/ The Case Book of Jules de Grandin, by
Seabury Quinn
RK/Flash Gordon (that's pretty easy)
A harder one RK/King of the Royal Mounted Police . .
.still too easy.
RK/Little Orphan Annie (I'm not joking. I LOVE
L.O.A.)
Now, to show how they could be done.
The trick is, do NOT try to force a
character-to-character match.
Working from the bottom up::
For instance, RK is basically a wandering swordsman
trying to redeem himself story.
It's pretty much a staple of Japanese fiction. BUT,
it's not much different from many Westerns,
or pulp detective stories.
L.O.A.??? You've got Annie, in depression era U.S.,
looking for a family, finding
and losing "families", fighting against impossible
odds.
Theses are the "common" elements. The opposing
elements are easier to find.
A simple way to do this . . .keep the basic RK
story,
but change the age. Cast
RK adrift at a much younger age. Start him wandering
at say 10-12, perhaps after
his first kill. Have him survive more by his wits,
a
la Annie, rather than the sword.
Sailor Moon/Jules de Grandin::
If you haven't read Seabury Quinn, stop now and go
to
the library or
Powells.com.
Jules de Grandin, M.D. is a french doctor/occult
detective who fights
supernatural evil (demons, vampires, ghosts or just
evil people) with the power of science, logic,
superior magic
and VERY big guns. ^_^ He only had two regular
companions
(an american doctor and and Irish cop) They're still
fighting
youma/daemon, etc. just w/o the fuku and magical
attacks.
Ranma and Adam Link . . . (by Eando Binder, (Earl
and
Otto, btw)
Adam Link, one of the first Robot stories with a
human
acting
and good, rather than evil robot. Adam tries to
learn
what it means to
be human, prove that he is alive and not just a
machine.
There are a lot of "robot" stories in manga already.
However there
is a certain onus in Japan against man/machine
melding. While there
are some funny robot stories (nuku nuku) there are
many that try to
"prove" that man is always superior to machine or
that
man/machine
combinations are bad (Ghost in the Shell or Key the
Metal Idol)
So, Ranma as purely a machine, trying to prove "he"
is
human
or at least alive. Akane hates boys, how does she
feel
about robots?
Hana Yori Dango/ Armaggedon 2419
The easiest of all. ^)^
Instead of changing school,
Makino Tsukushi changes centuries.
And the 4F are Han officials.
Ranma/The Shadow::
A natural. Training in China. Hidden monastery.
The weed of crime bears bitter fruit,
The Shadow knows. <chilling laugh>
With the power to cloud mens minds . . .ummm but
how about Tomboy's minds. ^_^
Sailor Moon/John Carter of Mars
Tsukino Usagi no Mars. Usagi instead of John
Carter.
(Usagi with a sword? Run awaaaay. ^_^)
I hope this give some idea of how I think
a Ranma/Battlestar should be done.
