This is the last post I am going to make where I try to explain the ideas
behind my story. I feel like I'm repeating myself, and I also feel like I
made these ideas more than clear in the story itself. If not, I'd
appreciate
actual C&C on how to make them more clear rather than continued knocking
down of straw horses; it should be abundantly clear from my posts here
what
my intent for the story was.
You can talk until you're blue in the face, it isn't going to make any
difference. The bottom line is that any reader who likes who Ranma is as a
guy is going to have issues with your story. I personally think Scott
Jamison hit the nail on the head with his comments. I also read your
respose, and I think you read him wrong. At least, it is my opinion that
your story isn't anti-male. I think it's anti-Ranma (or at least,
anti-boy-type Ranma). And so of course anyone who is a big fan of Ranma's
male side is going to have a problem with a fic that essentially wipes out
the entire fire-and-steel of his personality -- and with it, all the
familiar romantic conflicts -- no matter what the cause.
Which isn't to say that your fic doesn't have an audience. Obviously, there
are those who like this type of psychological "Let's shatter Ranma and turn
him into an uber-girly-girl" fic. And there is nothing wrong with that.
Whatever floats your boat.
But I don't like it. (Heck, I'm a girl, and I think your Ranko is waaay too
whiney and weepy, in my opinion, even under the circumstances.) And it's
nothing personal against you, you're a good writer. It is just my personal
opinion that the events in your fic do not accurately represent how the
Ranma 1/2 characters that I'm familiar with would actually react -- even
under these extreme circumstances.
What does this mean? Nothing too terribly earth-shattering, just that I and
those who feel the same way are not the audience for whom you are writing.
Since you obviously have no intention of taking Scott Jamison's or Mike
Noake's advice, and changing your fic so that it would reach a wider
audience, my advice is this: Don't worry about it. Just keep writing the
way you are, because there are those who are enjoying your fic for what it
is. But don't be surprised when you get feedback like Scott's or Mike's or
David's that take you to task for canon, plot and characterization issues,
because you're not going to convince us that you're right.
And, apparently, visa versa. ;-)
Ja!
