Greetings!
Hi, Morgan! Funny meeting you here... ^_^
Well, wonders of wonders. Here I am taking a little break from writing my
Y-You took a b-break?! You bastard! ^_^
current chapter, and what do I find but another of your character
sketches?
I really don't know where the heck these things come from, but I'm beginning
to take a liking to them. Writing in 1st person is something... different,
interesting. So don't be surprised if you find another one of them in the
future. ^_^
Another one-hour challenge, another fic... and another character
sketch. I _might_ be running out of ideas for a plot. ^_^
Happens to me all the time. Usually, I just toss in some fight scenes and
hope nobody notices. ^_^
Heheh. So you're saying I should get Fuyutsuki to fight Gendo to death?
Could work...
Those who know me are aware that I'm not the fastest writer out
there (not even close), so sorry if this feels rushed.
Actually, I liked the rushed feel of this piece. It almost seemed as if
Fuyutsuki was the one in a hurry, with only a bit of time to reminisce
before rushing off to work. Given how little screen time the poor person
gets, I can imagine Fuyutsuki to be a rather busy individual.
Of course, now that I think about it, the rushed feel was imposed on
purpose, yeah. It had nothing to do with the fact that I use only two
fingers to type, nope. Really! ^_^
Seriously, Fuyutsuki has to have a very interesting story to tell. He has
been with Gendo since the very beginning, has seen NERV appear, et cetera.
And I also think of him as one of those people who is so busy, he can't even
find time to think, to reflect on his life. This way, when he finally gets a
few moments off, the world comes down on him.
And, as always, send C&C,
people. PLEASE, I need it! Drop me a line, and tell me if you
liked this, okay?
Okay. ^_^
It's working, Morgan! You beg, then you receive! ^_^
Anyway, hope you enjoy the fic!
I usually do.
My job is done, then.

A SHADOW IN LOVE
An EVA shortfic
by Latin_D (latin_d@uol.com.ar)
______________________________
I'm not a person any more, I'm only a mere
shadow.
Okay, I know I'm usually known for my love of long and rambling openings,
but this really hit the spot with me for some reason. It's intriguing and
makes the reader want to keep going to understand the meaning behind the
words, as well as the speaker.
I also like descriptive openings, and try to use them for my other fics, but
I don't think 1st person lends itself or that kinf of beginning--and
ceratinly not when used in an internal dialogue like this one.
And yes, I was trying to get the reader interested in the story with that
first sentence. Guess it worked for some people.
For that's what a man who sells his soul is, a
shadow of his former self. Because only a shadow hides behind love
and duty, only a pitiful shadow follows orders from a person it
despises.
I'll admit, I almost thought this was going to be another sketch about
Shinji, but I know you a bit better than that, my friend. I still remember
the great sketch you did on Chichi, from Dragonball Z. You have a bit of
knack for putting the spotlight on secondary characters in these things.
^_^
Hey, thanks. I love using the not-so-famous characters of a series and give
them some depth. Most of them are usually (unfairly) overlooked, and I try
to correct that with these short pieces (go, Chichi! ^_^).
I'm a cynical man par excellence. One of
those "I won't believe until I see it" people. And so, I thought
love at first sight was nothing but nonsense for a long time. But,
one day, I saw her.
Ain't that always the way? It's as if someone is deliberately trying to
prove a guy wrong, some days. You say up, and the world goes down. ^_^
Yep. Has happened to me. For example, I say, "Next chapter will be done in
two weeks;" something appears from nowhere, and those two weeks become a
month. Oh, well... ^_^
Kouzou Fuyutsuki, I silently read the plaque on my
desk, Sub-Commander of NERV. An important man, I'm supposed to
be; a man with power, right hand of the Commander himself. Scum,
that's what I am; nothing but the vilest scum.
I'm not sure why, but I really like the way you revealed his name and
opinion. I can almost see him sitting in his office with the lights off,
staring at his nameplate like he'd never seen one before.
It seemed the right moment to reveal his identity, and the right way to do
it. When you're depressed, you always see things in a new, darker light.
And Gendo is even worse. He never deserved Yui, never.
His isn't love, it's purely an obsession. A desire to possess something
way beyond his usual reaches. Maybe he doesn't even know it--for
he is so used to deception that, sometimes, he even fools himself--, but
he doesn't really love her. He just needs her, because if someone so
perfect as Yui loves him, then he mustn't be that bad.
But... am I any better?
Yes. Because Gendo Ikari would never even bother asking himself that
question.
I really don't know. In fact, I haven't seen a fic that explains
satisfactorily the workings of Gendo's mind yet. He's just so... complex,
that I haven't been able to fully understand his character. Maybe if I write
another character sketch... Nah. ^_^
Will I be judged when this is over? Will I be
happy? We send children to their deaths every day, play with
people, manipulate them as we please. Will God forgive me? Will
humanity forgive me? Will--Will she forgive me?
See, again : I like the fact that you're showing Fuyutsuki struggling with
these questions. I like even more the unspoken implication that the answer
to them doesn't matter. He'll do what he does, and even though he worries
about the end result, he won't stop.
As they say, he's already too far down the road. He's scared of those
answers, and feels defeated by life--at least, in this fic. ^_^
Unexpected? Coming from Gendo, that's a lot.
I agree. ^_~
Coming from him, it could mean either an imminent Third Impact, or that
someone told him Shinji developed a backbone. I'd go for the Third Impact,
myself. ^_^
I await your judgement, Yui, my love. We will
meet soon.
Okay, I know you've gotten a bit of concern over this final line, but I
for one like it. It has the emotion right, if not the exact wording.
I don't know any more, as some people have told me the same as you. On the
one hand, Jon's right: a cynical person might not use those words. On the
other, he already admitted that his love for Yui overrode this cynicism of
his when he met her, so...
I'll think about it.
---
The end.
Well, I liked it. A lot, actually. For a brief character sketch that only
took about an hour, you really managed to get into Fuyutsuki's head. Maybe
there were a few parts here and there that needed a bit of touching up
(others have already covered those - no need to repeat them), but for a
shortfic, this was very well done.
Glad you liked it, Morgan. About that mistake, all I can say is that my
memory isn't what it used to be. And I was focusing on writing quickly
(something extremely difficult for me ^_^), too. I'll correct that, all
right.
Now you get to work on the next chapter of Silent Battles, and I'll talk
to you later. Farewell!
About that, if anyone is reading this, know that I'll be going away for my
prom trip soon. That's 10 days away from the computer, so next chapter will
be a bit delayed (not that that's something new ^_^). Sorry.
Thank you very much for the wonderful comments, my friend. I'll return the
favor as soon as the next chapter of Dark Crusade is posted (hurry up!).
See you later!
