And one more thing to remember about ANCs (Annoying New Characters).
If you look you will notice that most of the close friends and 
associates of the characters are people they have known for years 
or people to whom they have a connection through their families.
This is not a coincidence.  Ranma & Co. are not going to take up
with somebody they've never heard of before and become bosom buddies
in a few days.
