Yeah I know I said it'd be out in under a week after Darkest before
Dawn. I lied and im a lazy bastard. Don't worry, not only did i neglect
fanfics, but school as well. In either case, I was kinda rushed finishing
this so I probably screwed up or made it sound stupid near the end. YOU DECIDE!

Unrequited Love, a Neon-Genesis Evangelion shortfic/oneshot

Note: Takes place... uhm. Not sure. After Shinji's visit to Rei's apartment,
his comments about her looking like a mother, and her words of gratitude but
before the death of II. Just another scene from lil ol me.
The rusty gray door opened with an ear piercing shriek, scattering
the dust in the room all into the air. None of this seemed to faze Rei
Ayanami, however. She merely entered, closed the door behind her and removed
her shoes. Staring across the barren room at the useless pair of broken
glasses sitting on her dresser, she remembered. She saw herself, hazy and
indstinct, clad in a simple white towel staring at another hazy figure. She
instantly recognized him as Shinji Ikari, son of Gendou Ikari, Third Child
and ...friend?
The hazy figures disappeared, returning Rei to reality.
"Ikari..." Rei muttered softly as she deposited her schoolbag next to her
bed. Slowly, she sank to the bare sheets and was lost in thought.
'What is this? Are these... emotions? Is this love? hate? fear?'
'What is happening to me? Why must I experience these... things?'
'This is... pleasant? or unpleasant? I do not know anymore.'
"Shinji..." she muttered aloud before falling into the deep dreamless sleep
she knew so well.
Startled awake by the grinding sound of construction equipment below,
Rei looked about in a daze. She looked at the clock, and noted she slept
for 14 hours. Smiling sadly, she was once again lost in a haze of memories.
Shinji wearing Gendo's glasses.
Shinji lying on top of her nude body, looking embarassed.
Shinji smiling at her.
Herself saying "Thank You" to Shinji.
Once again she returned to reality, more confused than before. She sat up in
her bed and stared vacantly at a beaker of clear liquid on a table.
'I think...'
'I think...'
'I think I may... love Shinji Ikari'
With this revelation, Rei fell to the floor, sobbing into the crook of her
arm. Her emotionless facade shattered, she could do nothing but lie there and
weep. Knowing her tears were a part of the river that would forever keep her
from Shinji, she cried.

Final Notes: Yeah I know I said this would be done a day after "Darkest
Before Dawn". I suck. Beat me, baby. Anyways, I thought this was something
