Last year, and earlier this year (during sessions at Christmas and
Spring
Break), I wrote, sequenced, and performed a number of electronic/ambient
musical pieces (using Retro AS-1 and Unity DS-1 software synthesizers)
based
more or less (more than less) on the themes and concepts from the anime
Serial
Experiments Lain. Due to their size, I was unable to place them on my
school account.
Now, with my new account space -- http://www.cafe-pierrot.net/ -- I am
able to
store both high-quality mp3 and streaming RealAudio G2 versions of the
album,
for consumption by the anime fan community. This is a work of fan-art,
and so
any comments or constructive criticism would best be sent to my private

The album is called "Bootlegged Self-Image", and is available on my
website
(the address is above, and below), and will remain on there, so long as
I
don't go over my 3GB/month transfer limit. ^_^ I don't see this as
being a
big problem. Though if it does look like a problem (popularity never
*seems*
like a problem at first), I'll see about working out a mirror site for
the album.
The album uses samples of Japanese dialogue from Lain (mainly taken from
episode 8 -- thus there are few if any spoilers), as well as key phrases
which
have been transposed from the alphabet into musical notation, then
sequenced,
played live, or augmented further to create a mood that is something
Lain-ish.
The whole 32-minute album is approximately 45 megs, encoded at 192kbps
stereo
using AudioCatalyst 2.0...

Well, so far I've listened to Restart and Refine. Interesting. I'll do a
full review soon with the mp3 versions, but off the top of my head I can
say a few things.
The music itself is not bad at all, although the high end sounds seem a
bit muffled (take note I have my PC hooked up to a Philips 1200W
minicomponent system, so the speakers are not the problem). The sound is
not as expansive as it ought to be, especially in Refine, which has the
potential of becoming really trance-inducing, given the right mixing and
mastering.
The music could be nitpicked as being a bit repetitive, although in this
freeform style of composition (which is always easier with a good set of
synths) that's usually not much of an issue.
All in all, I like what I hear, though some pieces could use a little
remastering.
