                      Green Lantern:Akane

                           Prologue

Ganthet looked onto the world from where his fellow Quintessence
members met. He noticed that a certain area in Japan was taking major
abuse and threatening the welfare of innocents. The constant battles
between chi-using martial-artists and magical threats and curses were
the main cause of the problems. Opening his hand, he looked at the ring
that he had offered Hal Jordan before Hal, as Parallax, went to meet his
death.

*A new Green Lantern is needed. That one will have to do.*

The Guardian teleported himself to Nerima in front of the one who he
had chosen. A shadow passing over him caused him to look up for a
moment.

Looking back at the person he had decided on, Ganthet said, "You
will have to get you anger under control. Here."

He gave the ring and a lantern to the bewildered person, who asked,
"What am I supposed to do with this?"

"To deal with the problems. If you have questions, find your senior
in what you call Beikoku or the United States."

The blue midget returned to the plane of the Quintessence and watched
as events unfolded.

Putting the ring on, Akane Tendo was dressed in a one piece, form
fitting, green and black spandex suit.

"Now what I have gotten myself into?"

				Chapter 01

Looking at what she was now wearing, Akane thought, *I'm glad I knocked
Kuno away. This costume would be his dream come true.*

Holding up the green lamp and staring at it, she tried to recall where
she had seen the costume before. A sudden thought crossed her mind and
she glanced at the ring on her right hand. She concentrated for a
second and a mirror made out of green energy appeared in front of her.
She saw that the costume she was wearing had green boots and white
gloves. The arms and legs of the skin-tight uniform were black and the
rest of the body was covered in green. She flushed with embarrassment
as she saw how much the costume accentuated her features. In the center
of her chest was a white circular patch with a hollow, green circle with
a horizontal, green line on the top and bottom of the green circle.
She felt some relief, that she was wearing a dark, green mask. Flexing
her arm a bit, she noted that, even though the clothes were tight, they
wouldn't hinder her movements.

"Great, just great. This is Hal Jordan's Green Lantern costume," Akane
muttered. "Who was that blue guy and why did he give me a ring?"

*I've been given a Green Lantern ring and I'm asking why?* Akane
thought with some amusement. *I should be using it to be a hero. And,
I should be practicing using it.*

Casting a quick glance at the mirror, Akane willed it to dissolve. She
took a deep breath and concentrated. She lifted off the ground into the
air. She bit the bottom of her lip to make sure it wasn't a dream.
Feeling a bit nervous, she flew up higher and higher. Soon, she was
above the clouds and looking down at Japan. A smile crossed her face.

"This is great. I'm not telling Ranma about this. I can help out
people, just like Dr. Light does. I hope she doesn't mind some help. I
guess I'll have to get used to wearing this outfit. Embarrassing as it
is, it goes with the job."

Thinking about Ranma, Akane thought, *If I hadn't had that cold, I
would have been with him and his dad when they went on that training
trip. They should be back in a couple of days.*

Holding the lantern in both hands, Akane wondered about its
significance. "There has to be a reason for this and the name. Hal
and that JSA member didn't call themselves 'Green Lantern' for nothing.
Come on, Akane. You should be able to figure this out."

Making a fist with her right hand, she brought the ring in contact with
the open portion of the power battery. A sudden surge of energy
confirmed her first guess.

"This is the source of the ring's power, meaning the ring will run out
of power sooner or later. I'd better store this in my room and disguise
it."

She streaked down towards her home. Right before she landed, she
pulled back up.

*What am I thinking. I can't go in there dressed like this. This is
my secret and I don't want to lose it. I especially don't want Nabiki
selling pictures of me wearing this get-up. I guess I'll have to try
something.*

Akane's brow furrowed as she concentrated. The ring pulsed as she
slowly faded from view.

*I won't be able to maintain this for long. I've got to get in there
NOW.*

Invisible, Akane flew in through her open bedroom window. She took a
look around her bedroom and noticed the lamp next to her bed. Turning
the lamp so the area where the cord come out was facing her, she used
the ring to cut a hole in the back of the lamp. Lifting her power
battery, she used the ring to teleport it inside the lamp, with the
charging area sticking outside the hole she had just cut. Akane turned
the lamp back around, hiding what she had just done. She flew back out
the window, right before her invisibility faded.

"That was close. I really should figure out if this ring can restore
my clothes."

Recalling what she was wearing before she was handed the ring, Akane
willed her clothes back in existence. She sighed with relief when they
reappeared. After being assured that she could get back into her normal
clothes at any time, she recalled the GL suit back.

"I guess that the current Green Lantern must have changed the costume
for one of his own design. I could probably do the same, but I think
I'll stick to this one."

Flying above the city, Akane noticed a mob of women chasing after a
short, bald man.

The new Green Lantern smiled to herself. *Happosai. I guess I should
stop him."

She willed into existence a giant rabbit trap, which Happosai charged
into, unable to stop in time. The cage snapped shut, trapping the
martial arts master inside. Happy pulled out some of his fire-cracker
bombs and threw them at the cage walls. The bombs exploded, leaving the
cage intact. He looked up and gasped. He saw a girl in a skin-tight
costume, surrounded by a green aura.

Deepening her voice to disguise it, Akane said, "I'm sure the police
will want to have a few words with you."

The Green Lantern flew off, leaving a bunch of stunned onlookers. The
Tokyo police arrived at the scene and saw the cage. They asked what had
happened and received their answers. They moved towards the cage to get
at its prisoner.

Inside the cage, Happosai drooled. "What a lass. She is lovelier than
Akane or Ranma. I'm quite sure that she wouldn't mind seeing me again."

Hearing the cage door being lifted, Happy used his invisible man
technique to hide from the cops and make his getaway. His thoughts were
on the glowing green angel that had just captured him.

*Her panties would make excellent additions to my collection. Not to
mention her costume.*

Not knowing that Happosai escaped, Akane thought, *That was easy
enough. I should be able to handle some of the more destructive fights
that crop up.*
-------------------
In the JLA Watchtower, located on the moon, Batman frowned as he
replayed an audio report. The glow of a teleporter heralded the arrival
of Kyle Rayner.

Without turning around, Batman tersely said, "Kyle, we need to talk.
Whatever prompted you to give a ring to a teenage girl in Tokyo?"

"Huh? What are you talking about?" Kyle asked bewildered. "My ring
can't duplicate itself and Jade's ring was lost."

"I see. You had nothing to do with this new Green Lantern. It must
have been the Guardian Ganthet that gave her the ring."

	"There's a new GL?"

Clicking on the audio report, Batman said, "Yes, there is. Apparently
she is a teenage girl in Tokyo."

Kyle listened to the report and shook his head. "Err. Batman, I might
be able to read Japanese, but I'm a bit rusty with the spoken language."

"It shouldn't matter. Do you think all those aliens you encountered
when you tried to restart the corps spoke English? They spoke Interlac
and your ring translated that into English and your words into
Interlac."

Kyle filed that information away and stared out the window at Japan.

"What are you going to do?"

Kyle shrugged and replied, "Nothing. This is Ganthet's choice, and I'm
not going to interfere with that, especially if it leads to a
reformation of the Green Lantern Corps."

	"I see."

Feeling a need to explain his reasons, Kyle said, "I'm not shirking my
duties as Green Lantern, Batman. I just have the feeling that if I stay
away, for right now, the Corps has a chance to come back."

Batman said nothing as he stared at Kyle's back. He recalled that the
last time Kyle followed his hunch, a disaster was adverted and a
creature made its way back to the stars in its ultimate form.

"I understand. I'll ask Dr. Light to keep an eye on her."

"Why are you going to ask that loony to do anything. The last time we
fought, he almost killed me."

"Not him, her. The Doctor Light you fought is a villain. The Dr.
Light I'm talking about is female and served with Justice League Europe,
before it broke up."

*Paranoid as usual. I'm starting to see why Alan jumped down his
throat.*

Kyle started to head back towards the teleporter and stopped. He
dissolved the left arm of his costume and looked at the watch that had
just appeared.

*Monthly meeting today. At least this time, I won't be late. My work
is done. I guess I could do some sculpting while waiting.*

Kyle headed for his quarters on the moon, and went to work carving a
small statue. Instead of using his ring, he used the age old tools of
the sculptor.
----------------------
Back in Nerima, Akane restored her clothes and went home. As she
entered her house, she heard the television on. Glancing that way, she
saw Nabiki watching it.

Akane asked, "What's are you watching?"

Nabiki said, "Hi, sis. I'm watching a news report. Apparently we have
a super-hero here in Nerima. She caged Happosai and left him for the
police. Apparently he escaped from the police when they tried to get at
him. Judging by her costume and powers, we have ourselves a Green
Lantern. One of the theories put forth is that she is Hal Jordan's
daughter and that it is his ring she is using."

*I am not,* Akane thought to herself. She recalled what her sister
also had said and mentally groaned. *Oh great, Happosai escaped. I'll
have to get better at this.*

Before Akane could say anything else, Kasumi called, "Dinner's ready."

Nabiki and Akane kneeled by the dinner table and waited for their
father to come downstairs. While waiting, Nabiki made small talk.

"So, Akane. What do you think of having a super-hero here in Nerima?"

*I'd better be careful here,* Akane thought, as she replied, "I'm not
sure. I guess I'll just have to wait and see."

Nabiki smirked, "You do realize that Ranma is going to be jealous. In
under three seconds, she beat Happosai and had him locked up. That's
far better than anything Ranma has done to the old pervert."

*That didn't occur to me. Now, I have another reason to keep it
quiet.*

Akane grimaced and said, "You're probably right. I wonder what the
others are going to say."

*Too bad I can't get pictures of her. I could make a fortune selling
them.*
---------------
At the Cat Cafe, Cologne was watching the news report. She frowned as
she heard about the incident with Happosai.

"Someone managed to defeat Happosai that fast?" Cologne muttered. "A
green lantern? What's a green lantern have to do with anything? It was
a girl with magical powers dressed in a skimpy outfit that defeated
Happy, not a lantern. Civilized people, can't even identify something
right."

She turned the channel and watched one of her favorite shows. *Happy
will probably be looking for that girl. I hope she finds out how much
of a pervert he is, before she encounters him again.*

Cologne looked back, when she heard the jangle of the Cat Cafe hanging
door chimes. A depressed purple-haired girl had just entered.

"Hi, Great-Grandma. I no find Ranma anywhere."

The matriarch nodded and replied, "I figured as much. Genma is good at
hiding when he wants to be. He must have picked it up from Happy.
Don't worry. Ranma will be back soon enough."

"That right. I have to make something to show airen that I'm the one
for him," Shampoo said, feeling happy as she realized her beloved would
be back soon.

Shampoo bounded away, while Cologne shook her head.

"Ah. The exuberance of youth. It's too bad that she couldn't find
son-in-law. It would have been a perfect opportunity."

Shaking her head once more, she turned back to her television.
---------------------------------
In the council room of the JLA Watchtower, the Leaguers were finishing
up their monthly meeting.

Superman asked, "Is there anything else we need to discuss?"

Casting a quick glance at Kyle, Batman replied, "Yes. Yes, there is.
Apparently, Ganthet gave out another Green Lantern power ring to a girl
in Tokyo. I've had Oracle contact Dr. Light to keep an eye on the
situation, but I feel that I along with Kyle should go."

Superman turned towards Green Lantern. "Kyle?"

Shrugging, Kyle replied, "I'm not sure about this, but I'll go."

Before Superman could say anything, a holographic head appeared and
started talking.

"Sorry to cut in, Superman," Oracle said. "But, I've just pulled
reports in from that section of Tokyo. It's...interesting reading."

Superman frowned a bit. "Have hard copies made for all of us. That
way we can go over it after we leave here."

	"On it."

Plastic Man formed his body into Napoleon's hat and landed on top of
Kyle's head.

Stretching out his neck so he look Kyle in the eye, Plastic Man asked,
"Feeling a bit left out, now that a new Green Lantern has been chosen?"

"Not at all. I'm going to need all the help I can get, if the
Controllers start really pushing their Effigy Corps."

"That is the main reason we should contact this new GL," Batman
commented. "We'll leave tomorrow."

Kyle held up a hand and said, "I have a request. I'd like to bring
John in on this. Plastic Man, get off."

Plastic Man formed into a spring and bounced off of GL's head and
landed back in his seat.

Superman nodded. "That's a good idea."

After most of the League had left, Superman and the Martian Manhunter
had a conversation.

"Superman, I know what goes on in Nerima. I don't think Kyle is quite
ready for it."

	"I see. You're also going?"

"Yes. It should prove quite interesting."
-------------------------------
A quadriplegic man in a blue spandex suit was sitting in a flying chair
in an unused factory. His head took up half of his 5'10" height. Pink
bolts of energy flowed around the man's forehead as he heard the news.
The mental force exploded and overturned barrels, smashed boxes, and
even bent a couple of steel bars. While this was going on, the features
on the man's face contorted as his face became a bright red.

Hector Hammond screamed, "That power should be mine!! Not some
schoolgirl's!!"

A rain of dust made him realize that he was losing control. Not
wanting to drop a building on top of himself, he quickly brought his
rage under control and analyzed the situation. As he fought the anger
back, the dust falling and other effects of his temper-tantrum stopped.

"She is new to the power, so she won't have that much will. I'll
break her and take what should rightfully be mine. I guess I'm going to
Japan to acquire me a new slave."
----------------------------------------
Unaware that she was the subject of so much scrutiny, Akane lay on her
bed and stared at the ring she now wore.

*The Battle Doughi and Soba Noodles didn't have such a history behind
it. If I continue to wear it, I'm going to have to do my best to live
up to its legacy. But, that costume is still a bit embarrassing to
wear.*

A six inch image of a boy appeared above the ring.

*Ranma. I wish I could tell you of this, but Nabiki is probably right
about your reaction.*

After lowering her hand, she turned her lamp so that the power battery
hidden inside it was exposed. Placing the ring against the battery, the
new GL let her ring recharge.

*I should figure out how long it takes between recharging.*

Akane got up and headed downstairs and out to the dojo. Soon, she was
breaking bricks and doing her katas to try and clear her mind.
After a bit, she realized that what she wanted to do was to go back out
into public as Green Lantern and help out.

*There's no school tomorrow. So, why not?*

Akane waved bye to her father as she pretended to go on one of her
runs. Once she was certain no one was around, she used her ring to
change into her Green Lantern costume.

Patting her stomach and back, she wondered, *How do they go into battle
like this all the time, without getting embarrassed?*

Pushing that thought aside, she flew up into the air. Akane decided to
see if there were any crimes she could stop. She paid no attention to
the stares she was receiving from the ground as she patrolled. After a
bit, she saw two Yakuza gangs engaged in a private war.

*Here's my first real test,* Akane thought as she dived towards the
fight.

The first thing she did was put a wall between the two factions.
Surprised that their fight was stopped, the Yakuza turned and saw the
female Green Lantern hovering in the air above them. Before Akane could
say anything, both groups used their weapons against her. The GL hissed
in pain as a rock glanced off her shoulder. She flinched back as a
shuriken almost scraped her eyes. Flying out of range of the weapons,
she checked her shoulder and saw that the damage was very light.

*Enough is enough,* Akane thought angrily.

She dissolved the wall and used the ring to form a giant bell over the
group, that hovered a mere inch above the ground. She cracked her
fingers and held her hands as if she were holding a bat. A glowing
green mallet formed in her hands. The shaft of the mallet was a good
twenty feet long and the mallet head itself was a foot in diameter.

*This should put an end to this,* Akane though as she swung the mallet.

A resounding bong sounded out through Tokyo as the Lantern's blow
struck the bell. Smirking a bit, Akane let the bell and hammer vanish.
Seeing the results of her work, Akane felt a sense of satisfaction. All
members of both gangs were holding their ears in pain. GL used the
various chains that most of them were carrying to tie them up and move
them out of the way. She then turned her attention to the terrain that
had been fighting on.

*I hope those people will get something back for their cars,* Akane
thought as she lifted to badly damaged cars off the road and placed them
out of the way of traffic.

Seeing the police arriving on the scene and not really wanting to
answer a lot of questions, Akane flew away. She didn't notice that
another flying person had just seen her deal with the Yakuza. The
heroine's spandex had yellow arms and leggings, white body, gloves and
boots, and a yellow sunburst on her chest.

Dr. Light seeing her fly off thought, "That was an unusual way to deal
with that situation. She seems to want to help people out, but I'd
better make sure."

The yellow and white clad super-heroine flew in the direction that the
new Green Lantern had flown. Dr. Light stopped when she realized that
she had lost her quarry. On the ground beneath her, Akane was back in
her jogging suit and returning home.

Rubbing her shoulder as she ran, Akane thought, *I'm going to have to
watch it. The ring didn't protect me from that rock.*

Finishing her jog home, Akane saw that the sun was on the horizon. She
smiled a bit as she climbed onto the roof of the dojo and sat down to
watch the sun set.

*Ranma won't be back until the day after tomorrow and strange stuff
still happens.*

She mentally went over the events she had done as a super-heroine.

*I didn't do too badly at that, but I need to get better. There's no
telling what I'll be facing.*
------------------------------
Dr. Light returned to her home and phoned Oracle.

"Oracle? This is Dr. Light. Please put me in contact with Batman."

"Batman here. I take it you have a report on the new Green Lantern."

"Yes, I do," Dr. Light replied.

She went into detail about the gang war and how the new GL stopped it.
A silence came from the other end of the line for a few minutes."

"I see," Batman said. "The current Green Lantern and I will be
arriving tomorrow. We are also bringing along former Green Lantern:
John Stewart. Batman out."

Dr. Light hung up the phone and thought about the new heroine.

*I wonder if she knows what she has just gotten herself into?*
