Synaptic Misfire

A Neon Genesis Evangelion fanfic.

Rather serious spoilers for the series are contained below.

Ikari Shinji felt strange. On what was a perfectly beautiful
day, he began holding his head as if in pain. It began simply
enough, after a grueling three hour synchronization test, in
which he was confronted by no less than three ghostly, vaguely
maternal figures while unconscious. In a moment of angst free
clarity, he realized that he might benefit from some form of
treatment, preferably chemical. In such a decision he showed an
abnormal amount of will power, at least as compared to his
turnip equivalent norm.
He found himself in front of Akagi Ritsuko's door, silently
debating entering the room of the woman who put him through
daily torture. The main combatants in this mental free-for-all
were represented by a vertical and a horizontal squiggly line
respectively. In the background one could almost make out a
ghostly, vaguely matronly figure.
Akagi Ritsuko nearly stumbled over the boy on her way to an
"apointment" with Commander Ikari, but the impending impact of
Ritsuko's breasts broke his repeated uttering of "I mustn't run
away." Feeling a sudden leak spring in his nose the spineless
schoolboy stuttered over an unintelligible sentence.
"Look, Shinji, if this is about that thermometer thing again,
neither Rei nor Asuka had any problem with it-"
"No, its not that," Shinji said quickly. "I've just got
finished repressing those memories," he added, with more than a
little pride. "I just haven't been feeling right lately, you
know, in the head?" He paused expectantly.
"Wait, what episode are we on?" Ritsuko barked, bringing a
flustered Maya out on stage. She flashed an series of hand
signals to Ritsuko, the last of which cannot be shown on network
TV.
"Get your mind out of the gutter," Ritsuko said, looking
halfway between flustered and angry. "Is this about you almost
killing the closest thing you have to friend, the lovable
Touji?" she asked, compassion resonating in her tone.
Shinji was silent a moment, then scrunched up as another wave
of self-loathing crashed down on his slumping form. "What are
you talking about?" he asked uncertainly.
Looking alarmed, Ritsuko quickly blurted: "Never mind, someone
mixed up the hand signals," she stared at Maya, who pouted and
considered adding another banned gesture to the episode. "Well,
anyone who discovers the girl they had a crush on is actually a
clone of their mother is bound to develop a complex or two."
Shinji blanched, trying to decide if it was Asuka or Rei, and
choosing rather quickly. Dr. Akagi winced and decided to keep
her mouth shut for a second. She'd succeed in blowing a half
season of secrets; Anno was going to kill her.
"I'm so worthless," Shinji muttered, his headache forgotten.
