Sorry, it was fairly clear from the start.  After all, Gendo is the one
Rei hangs out with to have fun with in the series.

    Never doubt the power of human denial. A lot of peoplewant to see Shinji
and Rei together, so when they see "Ikari" they think 'Shinji' instead of
'Gendo' because that's what they want.
