Well, I didn't want to reply without quoting something, so don't think
of this as being specific to the quote below.
Overall, I want to make it clear that this is *really* derivative.
Still, it could work out, so long as this is just a way of getting a
common world for Ranma et al to bum about in. By the end of what was
posted, things start to develop nicely, and I for one would like to
see more (big Farmer fan that I am). However, if the story is just
going to parrot what has come before verbatim plotwise without
significant variations, then I think that this plan needs to be
changed.
The Riverworld can be a very interesting setting, but the original
books were as much about the reasons that these people (everyone who
ever lived) were thrown together, and the way in which they attempted
to unravel their common mysterious circumstances. Obviously, it would
be pointless to have the same plot conclusion since many of those
interested in this story would have already (or may soon) read the
books.
I suggest a major plot deviation, but I'm not sure what exactly it
should be (and I'd be against posting it to the list, since it would
cut down on the suspense, and therefore interest in the series,
considerably).
Another interesting setting that was "created" a while back as a
setting where characters from all backgrounds could be thrown together
was "Hell," which I also suggest as commercially available (but
probably out of print) source material for common world stories.
Perhaps that would be even more useful, since "Heroes in Hell" and the
others were primarily collections of short stories written by various
authors, with common setting (Hell) and characters (everyone who ever
existed).
