Part 10 "Repercussions"
"I didn't mean to..." Serena whined out.
"Serena Tsukino, go stand in that corner over there," Ellen
directed and pointed towards the corner.
"But Mommy..."
"Young lady, would you rather have a spanking?" Serena stuck a
finger into her mouth and shook her head. "Then do as you are told and
get into that corner... NOW!" Much to Ellen's relief, Serena went into
the corner and faced the wall. Sighing, she started cleaning the floor.
While the cupcakes and the chocolate cake couldn't be salvaged, the
cookies were still in reasonably good shape. <But I'm not going to sell
these at the bake sale,> she decided. She'd save what she could and put
them aside for the family.
<What am I going to do?> Ellen wondered, <Serena knew about the
bake sale. I can't believe she was that mean to Reenie. It's so unlike
her.> Not that Ellen approved of Reenie throwing a cupcake at her
daughter but she understood the little girl's anger. <I'd probably do
the same thing if I were her.>
After having picked up as much debris as she could, Ellen went
to get a mop. When she came back, she glanced to where Serena was and
paused. Her eyebrows went up a little as she saw Serena's thumb in her
mouth. <She hasn't done that since she was little.> Looking closer at
her young daughter, she saw that Serena was shifting slightly from foot
to foot. "Serena, do you have to go to the bathroom?"
"No Mommy," came the mumbled reply.
Ellen started wiping the floor with the mop and wondered at
Serena's strange behavior when she heard the sniffle. Leaning the mop in
one corner, she went over to her daughter and asked softly, "What's
wrong, honey?"
"I don't feel good," Serena replied.
"Does your tummy hurt?" The little girl nodded. "Where?"
"Here," Serena stated again, "I'll be okay."
"Oh Serena..." her mother said and lifted the child up, "Let's
go get you cleaned up."
FishEye sat sulkily upon a stool in the Amazon Trio's private
soda shop. Not only was she restricted from treats but HawksEye and
TigersEye were making it worse by offering her some. Finally in a fit of
rage, she lashed out and hit TigersEye, sending the youth off of his
stool and sprawling across the floor.
"Well," HawksEye observed while looking warily at FishEye, "At
least you don't hit like a girl." FishEye glowered at him. "Grandma
wouldn't like you fighting."
"Did YOU find a target, HawksEye?" FishEye questioned, "I've
tried and TigersEye tried. Let's see if you can do any better."
HawksEye picked up a photograph and smiled deliciously. The nine
year old nonchalantly took a sip of his soda and turned the picture
towards his companions.
"Her?" TigersEye squawked. He had pushed himself into a sitting
position but made no move to come any closer to FishEye. "Why her?" He
could never understand HawksEye's fascination with older girls. In fact,
this one was downright ancient!
"What makes you think that Pegasus is hiding in her?" the girl
asked scornfully. Her hand started reaching for the chocolate sundae
that TigersEye had been eating.
"Don't even think about it!" he screeched, "Or I'll tell
Grandma!"
"She looks like a very caring person," HawksEye smiled, "I'll
just use my charm to win her over." Taking another sip of his soda, he
licked his lips. Yes, this would be fun.
Serena peered out her bedroom window and noticed that the rain
had stopped. <I hope Reenie doesn't get a cold.> She wished the little
girl would come back. <Mom's really mad at me.> The thought of her
mother made Serena glance towards the door. Quickly moving away from the
window, she hopped up onto the chair again that was in the corner and
sighed. She couldn't sit still no matter how hard she tried. <I feel so
hyper.> After another minute or so, Serena just had to get off the chair
and walk around the room. She was standing beside the bed when she heard
footsteps. Dropping the stuffed bunny she had picked up, she ran for the
corner as quickly and quietly as possible.
<That was close!> Serena thought as her bedroom door opened and
her mother came walking into the room. "Mommy," Serena asked softly,
"Are you really mad?"
"Yes, I am," Ellen replied, "You knew that there was a bake sale
tomorrow at school. You knew I was making that stuff for the bake sale."
"I forgot," Serena said softly and looked toward the floor.
Her mother gave her a very serious look and added, "And you knew
Reenie was going to be hostess. She said she was going to tell you."
<Hostess?> Serena thought, <Reenie didn't say anything. No
wonder she flew off the handle.> She screwed up her face in
concentration for a moment before saying, "Mommy, Reenie didn't tell me.
I think she was gonna have that be a surprise." <I hope that sounded
like a six year old.> Serena whined to herself, <Oh Mommy, go away so I
can get off this stupid chair.>
The teen part of Serena fought that urge; she had been very
naughty. Sniffling a little, she asked, "What are ya gonna do?"
"I need to go to the store and get some things so I can make
more goodies for tomorrow," her mother told her, "And since your father
isn't back, I'm taking you with me."
"I'll be extra good, Mommy, I promise!" Serena swore while
crossing her heart.
"Go to the bathroom and then get your coat and shoes on," Ellen
directed, "But Serena..." Ellen began as the little girl started for the
bedroom door.
"Mommy?" Serena asked.
"When you come home, you're going to have your bath and go right
to bed, no stories tonight and no bedtime snacks. I don't want any
trouble."
"I'll be good. Honest," Serena squeaked out and went out of the
room.
All the way to the store and even within the store, Serena kept
to her word. She was on her best behavior. She held onto her mother's
hand and didn't ask for anything. It was hard because all she wanted to
do was run around and ask for stuff. As they were walking home, Serena
got up enough courage to ask, "Mommy, can I help ya?"
"Serena..." Ellen began with a hint of exasperation.
"But I was naughty and I wanna say I'm sorry to Reenie. Please
Mommy?"
"Didn't I say you were going right to bed?"
<Yeah, you did,> Serena thought, <Oh Reenie, I want to make this
up to you.> She felt miserable for having ruined her big sister's
special day. <I should know better. I'm fifteen for Kami's sake!> After
a few more moments of thought, she turned to look up at her mother.
"Pretty please?"
"No," Ellen stated firmly.
<There she is,> HawksEye thought as he peered out from his
hiding place in the bushes. <A small pumpkin with her... No problem.>
Snapping his fingers, the bottom of Ellen Tsukino's grocery bag ripped
open, spilling its contents onto the ground.
"Oh no!" Ellen moaned. Even Serena was surprised.
Staggering out from the bushes, HawksEye asked, "Are you okay,
ma'am?" He appeared frail and undernourished. Kneeling, he reached for
one of the spilt items.
"Yes, thanks, er..." Ellen said as she bent down reaching for an
item. HawksEye watched her carefully and once she grasped the item, he
covered her hand. She gave a little gasp and looked into his face.
"Mommy?" HawksEye asked after crumpling his face in
concentration. Leaning closer, he declared, "Mommy!"
"What?!" Ellen asked.
"Oh, I'm sorry, Mom... ma'am. You look like my mommy. The
one..." A couple of tears appeared in his eyes. "The one who abandoned
me."
"She looks like me?" Ellen asked, concern showing in her face
for such a helpless young boy.
"I thought you were her," the boy explained while reaching into
his pocket. Clenching his fist, HawksEye concentrated and produced a
locket before pulling his hand from his pocket. "Look," he said as he
opened the locket and thrust it towards the unsuspecting woman. "This is
my mommy."
"Oh my..." Ellen gasped, even Serena's eyes enlarged because the
locket held a very nice looking picture of a woman who could easily have
been her mother's double. "What was her name?" Ellen asked.
"Ellen," HawksEye replied.
"What?!" Serena demanded. <This is majorly weird.> Now she was
looking at her mother with large round eyes of disbelief.
"I'm sorry. How could I think a young lady like you could be my
mommy?" HawksEye struggled to stand. "I should go." Just then, he
toppled to the ground and coughed a few times. <This is working.> Mrs.
Tsukino was immediately worried about him. "I wish I could taste my
mommy's cooking before I die," he whimpered weakly.
"I should get help, Mommy," Serena offered.
"Yes, please do," Ellen agreed. This just mystified Serena even
more. HawksEye felt even more excited as the little girl turned, ran
down the path, and vanished around a bend.
<What's wrong with Mommy?> Serena worried, <She'd never let me
go off by myself before.> There was something definitely not kosher. She
reached for her wrist and realized that she didn't have her Scout
Communicator. <Dang!> Serena thought, <Maybe it's in my pocket.> Making
a flicking motion her with hand, she came back empty handed. <No
communicator?!> This was not good! <I gotta find Reenie.> Maybe her
transforming would alert Darien too.
Making sure the area was clear, she called out, "MOON COSMIC
POWER!" she shouted. In a swirl of pink light, Serena Tsukino was
replaced by Sailor Moon in a pink outfit. <I'll never get used to this.>
Now where would Reenie run off to? Suddenly it came to her. "Darien's!"
Turning, she plowed through the park at a blistering speed
towards Darien's apartment.
Reenie Tsukino walked slowly down the street deep in thought.
She had spent some time with Melissa in the Crown Arcade. It had helped
that her friend was sympathetic to her troubles, although Reenie wasn't
about to do what Melissa had suggested for revenge. <I wish my little
sister was back.> The older Serena was nice to have around but Reenie
wanted her Serena.
She was rather confused. On the one hand, she was glad that
Serena hadn't asked to help her be hostess. On the other hand, it was
quite atypical of Serena not to ask. <She was right there when I told
Uncle Darien.> It's just she was glad that Serena had forgot. <But she
shouldn't have wrecked all that stuff.> What Serena had done reminded
her of the other Reenie. <The other Reenie must miss her Serena too.>
Although now, she could understand why the other Reenie was sometimes
mean to Serena. Still, she held the opinion that the other Reenie needed
a sound spanking but she would keep that opinion to herself.
It was the flash of pink that pulled her from her thoughts. Her
eyes enlarged and she started making a squeaking noise when she noticed
that Sailor Moon was running towards her. Making sure no one was
watching her, she slipped into an alley and waited.
A few seconds later, Sailor Moon came charging into the alley.
Screeching to a halt in front of Reenie, she breathed out heavily before
saying, "Reenie..."
"Sailor Moon, what are you doing here?" Reenie demanded.
"There's big trouble," Sailor Moon warned, "Please Reenie, we
need to call the others. Something's wrong with Mommy and I think it's
majorly bad."
"Aunt Ellen?" Reenie asked. "Okay, just a second. MOON PRISM
POWER!" Reenie shouted and for the briefest of times, the alley was
bathed in magical light before it faded to reveal Sailor Chibi-Moon
standing where Reenie had once been. "Come on, Sailor Moon, we'll get
the others."
"No time," Sailor Moon said, "Call 'em and tell 'em to hurry!"
Chibi-Moon would have argued but she had never seen Serena this
serious before. "I'm leader," she stated seriously.
"But this is Mommy!" Sailor Moon insisted before turning and
running out of the alley. "Please?"
<She's right,> Chibi-Moon thought and raced after the littlest
Scout.
<Hang on, Mommy!> Serena cried desperately, <Please be okay!>
She could feel herself wanting to bawl but there was no time. <Hurry!>
"That doesn't look like what you told me," Chibi-Moon observed
as they came upon the spot where her aunt was. Hiding behind a bush,
they watched in horror as the sickly boy stepped away from Ellen and
vanished behind a red curtain. Their horror intensified as a healthy boy
in a strange circus outfit appeared instead, an evil grin on his face.
"Who... What are you?" Ellen demanded as she pushed herself to a
standing position and took a step backwards.
"HawksEye of the Dead Moon Circus, madam," he said flamboyantly,
"And you will give me your dream mirror." With that, he grinned even
more.
"My dream mirror?" Ellen queried.
"One!" A board came up.
"What?!" both Scouts asked.
"Two!" HawksEye crowed, a gleam of anticipation in his eyes.
Ellen gasped in fear. "Three!" Sailor Moon nearly lunged for HawksEye
when her mother screamed but Chibi-Moon held her still. As HawksEye
approached, he was about to reach for the dream mirror when Chibi-Moon
shouted.
"STOP RIGHT THERE!" Chibi-Moon yelled, "Family is special and
for threatening my family, you will pay! I AM SAILOR CHIBI-MOON, THE
CHAMPION OF LOVE AND JUSTICE! ON BEHALF OF THE FUTURE MOON, I WILL RIGHT
WRONGS AND TRIUMPH OVER EVIL, AND THAT MEANS YOU!"
"Two small pumpkins?" HawksEye wondered, "Not a problem,
Bam-Bam! Come forth and squash these pumpkins!"
The two Sailor Scouts watched with horror as HawksEye's shadow
swirled for a moment and then solidified into a cute little girl wearing
what looked like an old World War I German Army helmet with a spike on
it. The spike was adorned with a cute blue bow.
"First, we clean the cannon," the little girl announced as she
took what appeared to be an overly large chimney sweep brush and ran it
in and out of the cannon. "Next, we load it." She then hopped into the
cannon. "Third, we light the fuse."
"Oh my... Hello there!" Sailor Moon called out but the girl
ignored her.
"Blast off in five... four... three..."
"Venus Love Chain Encircle!" Sailor Venus' voice cried out. Just
as the cannon launched the Lemure towards Sailor Moon and Chibi-Moon,
the golden chain snared them and yanked them from danger.
"Are you both all right?" Tuxedo Mask asked. The little girls'
only response was to glare at him balefully.
"That hurt!" Sailor Moon whined.
"What a strong body," Mercury observed.
"They just keep coming like flies!" HawksEye growled, "Bam-Bam,
take care of them."
"Yes Sir!" Bam-Bam quipped and running back to the cannon that
had a giant blue ribbon tied around it, jumped inside before lighting
the fuse. "Blast off in five... four... three... two... one!" As the
Lemure came flying at them again, Sailor Jupiter fired off an attack but
it didn't work. With a yell, the Sailor Scouts and Tuxedo Mask
scattered. "Don't move!" Bam-Bam shouted when she realized she had
missed.
"You can't say that!" Mars muttered more to herself than anyone
else.
"Mommy!" Sailor Moon yelled when she realized that HawksEye was
about to look into her mother's dream mirror. She charged forward, not
even listening to Chibi-Moon and Tuxedo Mask. There was a sudden
explosion and she went flying as Bam-Bam attacked again. <Mommy...>
Sailor Moon thought, <I have to stop him.> Pushing herself up, she cried
out, "PINK SUGAR HEART ATTACK!" The pink sugar hearts flew out from her
wand and struck HawksEye on the chin. He turned to glare at her.
"Pest!" he hissed and raised his hand to strike Sailor Moon but
just then, a flash of white and blue blurred by Sailor Moon. In a
split-second, HawksEye went flying as Chibi-Moon drove all her weight
into the boy.
"Leave them alone!" she shouted. As he began to stand back up,
Chibi-Moon drew out her own wand and shouted, "SPIRAL MOON HEART
ATTACK!" Much to her dismay, all it did was drive HawksEye back a short
distance.
"My turn," he said menacingly. Producing a torch, he breathed,
sending a mass of flame racing towards Sailor Moon and Chibi-Moon who
were summarily knocked off their feet. Before the others could help,
Bam-Bam attacked again sending the other Sailor Scouts and Tuxedo Mask
sprawling for cover.
HawksEye returned to the shackled woman and stuck his head
inside her dream mirror. Ellen screamed as he peered inside it. After a
brief moment, he pulled it out again and sighed. "A nice dream but no
Pegasus... Bam-Bam! Finish her off so he won't hide here!"
"Yes Sir!" Bam-Bam replied and made for her cannon.
<I'm... powerless,> Sailor Moon lamented, <Oh Reenie...> She had
watched helplessly as her mother lay in the villain's grasp. <I have to
stop him, but how?> Something Pegasus said to her in a dream came back.
Closing her eyes, she thought, "Pegasus, please... Power us up
extraordinarily."
Everything seemed to pause as the sky lighted and Pegasus
appeared. In her mind, Sailor Moon heard Pegasus say, "Little Maiden,
say `MOON CRISIS, MAKE UPī!"
"Oh yeah!" Sailor Moon remembered and flushed brightly,
"Chibi-Moon, our double transformation!"
Chibi-Moon blushed for a moment and then nodded, together both
Sailor Moon and Chibi-Moon shouted, "MOON CRISIS, MAKE UP!" Sailor Moon
was about to perform the Twinkle Yell to summon Pegasus then she
realized that he was already there.
"Quick!" she prompted Chibi-Moon who drew forth her wand.
There was a further surge of magic as Pegasus charged
Chibi-Moon's weapon so she could cry out, "MOON GORGEOUS MEDITATION!"
"STAGE OUT!" Bam-Bam screeched. HawksEye snarled and vanished
back to the Dead Moon Circus.
Sailor Moon quickly detransformed and ran to her mother, crying
out, "Mommy!"
Later that evening, Reenie Tsukino sat in the furo of the
Tsukino home and let out a large sigh. <Aunt Ellen's really nice making
that stuff all over again, especially after what happened.> Serena had
also apologized. When her aunt had sent her little sister in to have a
bath and then straight to bed, Reenie was glad little Serena hadn't made
any fuss. <But I got sent to my room too.> Although she wasn't in as
much trouble as her little sister, Ellen still hadn't liked her throwing
that cupcake at Serena.
She was glad she didn't have to watch Serena take a bath. She
needed time to sort out her own emotions. <I do love both Serenas...
and my Serena will come back.> But she couldn't understand why the teen
Serena hadn't known how much the bake sale had meant to her. Feeling the
call of nature, she pushed herself up and walked over to the toilet. As
she sat down, Reenie thought, <I was mad that Serena wasn't gonna let me
see how Aunt Ellen was... but she was right. I had to use Luna Ball so
the others wouldn't get into trouble.> Still, she just couldn't bring
herself to really forgive Serena, especially considering the older
Serena should have known better.
After another fifteen minutes, Reenie had just finished changing
into her pajamas and was getting ready to go to bed when her aunt came
into the room. "Reenie, can I talk to you?" Ellen asked.
"Sure, Aunt Ellen," Reenie said and sat down on the bed.
Ellen walked over and sat down beside her niece. "You know why I
sent you to your room, right?" Reenie nodded. "You were happy that I
sent Serena to her room, right?"
"Yeah," Reenie said before she could stop herself. After another
moment's pause, she added, "She was really bad."
"Well, I would have done more," Ellen explained, "But Serena had
a bad tummyache. She was really sorry too, Reenie. She wanted to help
make sure everything was right." Reenie sat silently. "It's okay to be
mad at her, Reenie. I'm upset too. But maybe you can tell Serena why
you're mad tomorrow?"
"I guess so," Reenie agreed. She hugged her aunt as Ellen hugged
her and gave her a kiss on her forehead. <I'm glad you're okay. You're
my other mommy.> And she loved both of her mothers very much.
"I really messed up," Serena whined softly as she lay in her bed
that night. "What am I gonna do?" She felt terrible about her actions.
"Did you say you were sorry?"
"Yeah, but I'm like fifteen, not six. I acted like a little
kid."
"Well, you are," the kitten pointed out.
"Thanks a lot, Luna," Serena said sarcastically, "Maybe we
should go." When Luna shook her head, Serena's eyes enlarged. "Why not?"
"Because you'd hurt Reenie's feelings. She's angry with you but
wouldn't you be very upset if our Reenie had done the same thing?"
"Yeah," Serena admitted after some thought. <I would be so mad.
I think even Mommy would be mad at her.> The funny thing was she
remembered something like this happening. <Reenie took my lemon pie and
I was pretty mad.> She hadn't acted very nicely then either.
"So what should I do?" Luna just shrugged as much as a kitten
could. <This Reenie's so nice and she's been having such a hard time.>
There just had to be something that she could do to make things better.
<I don't want to go with her not liking me.> But she knew she would have
to go sometime soon. <The other girls are really acting funny. That
thing Amy talked about must be happening.>
It was nearly an hour later that Serena sat up in bed with a
start. Luna, who had been sleeping peacefully, looked blearily at her.
"What is it?"
"I got it," Serena declared with determination in her voice.
Crawling out of bed, she walked purposefully, but softly to the door and
opened it. The hallway was dark and quiet. <I hope Mommy and Daddy are
asleep.>
Softly she walked down the hall in her bunny pajamas and paused
at the bottom of the steps that led up to her daughter's room. <Come on,
Serena, it's only fair.> Guilt overrode her hesitation and she padded up
the steps. Much to her relief, she found Reenie lying in bed awake.
"Serena?" the pink haired girl questioned but Serena didn't
answer until she had closed Reenie's door. "What are you doing?" the
little girl asked as she sat up in bed.
"I'm really sorry, Reenie," Serena said softly. Walking over to
the bed, she made a flicking motion and produced the Disguise Pen. Her
sister's face paled slightly but her eyes enlarged and she took on a
confused expression when Serena offered the Disguise Pen to her.
"What's that for?" Reenie questioned, "Go back to bed. It's
late."
"Reenie... you could get big and punish me," Serena offered
while continuing to hold out the Disguise Pen.
"I don't wanna get big, Serena," Reenie replied, "What if Aunt
Ellen came in?"
"But..."
"No, I won't get big," Reenie replied.
<Well... I guess there's only one thing to do then,> Serena
decided. Returning the Disguise Pen back in her dimensional pocket,
Serena crawled onto the bed and lay on her tummy across Reenie's lap. To
say that Reenie was completely baffled would be understating the matter.
After a few moments, Reenie shook her head and let out a long
sigh. <Oh Little Sister...> She was still upset at Serena but she could
see that her little sister was feeling badly about her misbehavior. <I
have to get her to bed or Aunt Ellen will be mad.> Not to mention that
it was uncomfortable having Serena laying like she was. The little girl
was heavy and bony. "Serena, get up." When the six year old didn't move,
Reenie said more firmly, "I'm not gonna punish you. Now go back to bed!"
Feeling a little exasperated, Reenie laid back down as best she
could and tried to ignore Serena. She couldn't bring herself to push her
off. After a few moments, she felt the weight shift and the little face
of Serena appeared. Her blue eyes shimmered with unshed tears.
"Don't you love me?"
"Of course, I do," Reenie declared, "But Aunt Ellen already
punished you." Turning over to her side, she added, "Now go to bed."
"I'm sorry, Reenie," Serena apologized again. She gave a little
sniffle and moved from the bed.
Once the little girl was gone, Reenie sighed. <I hope Serena
doesn't go away.> While she wanted her Serena back, she didn't want the
older one going away feeling bad. <Oh Mommy, I wish I could talk to you.
I feel so mixed up sometimes.>
One thing she was feeling mixed up about was Lita. She wasn't
sure how to deal with the revelation that the Lita she had thought came
back was actually the older one. <What'll happened when she leaves with
Serena?> She didn't know and Raye would be very unhappy. Sighing again,
she rolled to her stomach and, snuggling deeper into the covers, tried
to go to sleep.
Serena padded down the hallway and past her bedroom. She softly
crept into her parents' room and over to her mother's side of the bed.
<Reenie isn't acting right,> Serena decided as she carefully crawled in
beside her mother. <My Reenie would have taken that chance and things
would have been fine.> She was now completely unsure of what to do.
"Serena?" came the soft voice of her mother.
"I don't feel good, Mommy," Serena remarked as she snuggled next
to her mother. She felt a little better when Ellen wrapped her arm
around her. <Don't worry, Mommy. I'll be very good tomorrow.>
Lying there in the darkness, she thought about the fight earlier
and sighed a little. <I know how Reenie feels now.> A small smile
flickered across her face. <Oh sweetheart, have I really messed things
up between us?> Well, she'd go to her friends and her mom for help on
that front.
"MINA!" Mrs. Aino shouted, "Get off the couch and come eat your
breakfast!" She watched with a stern gaze as her daughter passed her.
"And I don't want you jumping on the furniture."
"But Mommy, it was fun!" Mina grinned. "I was being a spy."
"Mina.... don't jump on the furniture again," Mrs. Aino warned
sternly. "Now I've packed your cookies for the bake sale."
"Can I see?" Mina questioned as she slipped from her chair and
went over to the container that her mother was holding. Much to her
mother's distress, the little girl opened it up. "Aw... those aren't
mine."
"Now Mina," Mrs. Aino began soothingly, "Maybe you should take
these and we'll eat the ones you made tonight."
"No," Mina protested, "I wanna take mine." She then sniffled a
little and let her eyes droop into a sad puppy-dog expression. "You
don't like my cookies."
Mrs. Aino tried to resist her daughter's look but eventually
gave in. "Okay, Mina, go eat breakfast and I'll get your cookies."
Sometimes, she wondered if she indulged her little girl too much.
Ellen Tsukino couldn't help but smile as she watched her little
girl march down the street towards the school. <She's guarding Reenie's
stuff. And just to think the night before she was devouring it!> She let
herself giggle a little. <She looks so serious.>
Indeed, the first grader was very serious. After having had a
little talk with Reenie that morning, Serena had decided to play "guard"
to the food as it was transported to school. Reenie thought it was cute
and she could feel her anger starting to really seep away. She was
getting her little sister back in some ways.
<Now, I'll have to remember to give Serena some pocket money so
she can buy a treat.> Mrs. Tsukino's grin got wider as she noticed Amy
and Lita's mother. <Oh she looks tired.> Indeed, Mrs. Anderson looked
harried. Both her daughters were pulling on her arms, trying to get her
to hurry up. <Oh, I'm so glad I only have one little girl. I don't think
I could keep up with twins.>
Later that morning as the bake sale was occurring, little Amy
Anderson wandered through the crowds of parents and children looking for
Kimmy. When she saw the younger girl, she walked up and chirped, "Hiya
Kimmy."
"Hi Amy," Kimmy responded.
"Here," Amy said as she held out a sprinkle-topped cupcake.
Kimmy looked at it oddly. "I'm sorry, Kimmy. Come to my party. Please?"
When Kimmy gave her a dubious look, Amy declared, "You're my bestest
friend."
Kimmy took the cupcake and said, "Thanks." She paused then
questioned, "You really my friend?"
"Yep!" Amy chirped, "Please, Kimmy, come to my party. Pretty
please?"
"'Kay," Kimmy agreed.
Amy hugged her and suggested, "Let's go look at the other
goodies." She gave Kimmy a grin. "I gotta new book."
"Really?" Kimmy asked, "What?" Amy leaned over and whispered in
Kimmy's ear who giggled. "You're making that up."
"Am not," Amy insisted and giggled. It was nice to have a friend
like Kimmy.
<I don't believe it!> Reenie thought, <Serena hasn't gotten
anything.> The little girl had wandered around but not once did Reenie
ever see any signs of Serena eating anything. <That just isn't like
her.> She was just starting to wonder if something was seriously wrong
when Serena walked up to her and held out her hand. "What's this?"
"It's for you, Reenie," Serena told her, "Get somethin' good."
Reenie stuck out her hand and was surprised when a small amount
of money was put into her hand. She stared at Serena and then at the
money. "Hey, this is the money Aunt Ellen gave you."
"I want you to get something extra special," Serena insisted.
"Aren't you going to buy anything?" Serena stuck her finger into
her mouth and shook her head. "And why not?"
"I was bad," Serena answered, "I don't deserve nothing."
<Oh Serena...> Reenie thought, <You're the bestest.> She hugged
her little sister and then gave the child the small amount of money
back. "You buy something really special for me. I can't leave 'cause I'm
the hostess." <I'll split it with her.> She giggled as the little girl
bounded off excitedly to do her task. <How can I stay mad at her?> She
just couldn't. Smiling, she turned to greet some new arrivals.
