vitriolic put downs, tongue-in-cheek summaries and hentai twisting

Ascent of the Fallen
Parts One and Two
by Sparky Clarkson <sparkster@writeme.com>
http://members.tripod.com/Sage_Ohlmin/evafic.htm
Gendou plays good guy for Machiavellian purposes. SEELE attempts
to hack in MAGI - that backfires. Shinji says the all important
three words but Asuka can't hear him as she's having a metaphysical
conversation with a doll. But she manages to resolve her problems
- without the help of a therapist, one hastens to add. SEELE attacks
with nine EVAs. That backfires too. Geez. And you thought being a
shadowy conspiratorial organisation meant that your will got done.
Rei gobbles up Adam, we await to see what changes will abound. Oh,
is Shinji gay?
I didn't read the first version of Ascent so I can't make a
comparison between this rewrite and the original but things are
looking good. I'm not a big fan of Eva introspection scenes as
they tend to become pompous or pretentious or laboured. Many
succeed in doing all three. Glad to say that Sparky's done a
great job with Ascent thus far and there are lots of things I'm
curious about: how will Shinji and Asuka and Kaworu get on? What
will happen to Rei's digestion? Will SEELE now resort to writing
threatening letters and leaving poo in Gendou's mailbox? When do
the Fallen debut? Lookin' fwd to more!
Endless Mile
by Lara Bartram <lara@emunix.emich.edu>
http://www.thekeep.org/~lara/
Darkish sort of fic. Shinji is attacked by something... and then
subsequently he starts to kill people. Runs away despite the
efforts of lots of beautiful females to help him and waits for
Third Impact. Grim stuff.
Considering NGE is a dark type of fic, it's surprising there aren't
that many good dark fics out there and there's no shortage of WAFF
type Eva fics. I'm sure Anno-sensei would be estatic. Perhaps there's
some sort of law of equal and opposite reaction in the relationship
between fanfic and anime. Robert 'Kenjiko' Haynie's acceptance speech
at the 1999 Chicken Ball Awards encapsulates this paradox perfectly.
After reading it twice, somehow I still couldn't quite picture a
vampiric Shinji. I blame that on watching too much Buffy - where
becoming a vampire causes you to lose your original personality.
All in all, this is good, innovative 'what if' stuff.

NERV vs The UN Accreditations Process 3
by Lara Bartram <lara@emunix.emich.edu>

More wackiness from Ms Bartram. Yay! <Waves flag 'I'm a Lara Fan!'>
Lara 3:16 says "THIS HAS BEEN AN ALMOST COMPLETELY TRUE STORY, OR AT
LEAST BASED ON A COMPLETELY FACTUAL BOOK" - which is what makes the
NERV-UNA series funny and scary at the same time. Maya and Shigeru
get some of the best lines in this installment. And yes, I read mtcff
ULTRA, why do you ask? ;)
The Gods Within
Part 2: Visiting Aliens to Immigration

Shinji approximates to Superman. Asuka to the Flash. And Scriv hints
that Rei is something like Wonder Gir^H^H^H Woman. Except triplets or
something. In this part, Asuka learns more about the extent of her
powers through explanations from Ritsuko (nice link is drawn to the
AT Field concept) and through accidental practice. Shinji tries his
best to make Asuka feel welcome.
A gripe. The first scene was particularly unclear. Kaji seems to
talking to Ritsuko and The Doctor (Ikari?). Kaji and Ritsuko are
married but there seems to be some sort of partner sharing thing
going on here. Is this reading correct? An observation. Interesting
point about the powers not being related to the comic books but
helping Shinji to orientate his powers. Does this theme have a major
role to play in plot development later? All in all, this fic looks
like fun and holds great promise. Can't wait to see Rei introduced.

Maya Snaps
(A lemon NGE fic)
By Ammadeau <Roy.Fokker@UNSpacy.org>
http://www.angelfire.com/anime/amma
The title says it all. Gendou and Ritsuko do the nasty on Maya's
coat which has special sentimental value. Maya snaps. She drugs,
abducts, goes S&M on Ritsuko. Then they live happily ever after.
The basic premise being 'Gendou is a bastard'. Also one spies the
Hand of Lara - with Ammadeau's acknowledgement of her encouragement
as well as the reference to her Ritsuko-Misato piece.
I broadly agree with the points raised by C. Jones - particularly
about literary closure using the symbol of the coat. This fic was
a real whopper (146 kb) and there were occassional spelling mistakes
but overall, a thoroughly solid and entertaining piece of work which
should attain the status of a MUST READ for Ritsuko-Maya fans. Others
that would probably fit in this category would be the most recent
installment of CoaEG and 'When We Were One' and others by Joyce K
Wakabayashi (http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Gulf/7463).
that's all folks!
