I wrote this as a response to a challenge. It didn't end quite the
way I anticipated it to, which is why the title may seem a bit odd.
Endless Mile
by Lara Bartram
"He'll rekindle all those dreams it took you a lifetime to destroy"
-'Red Right Hand', Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Well, what can I say, it's Lara Bartram.
Very, very nice. I assumed the vampiric stuff was WoD-style, since I happen
to be pretty up on my WoD background, but this story would probably work
equally well with Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, or any of the other
vampire backgrounds there are out there (apart from maybe Buffy). Thinking
of it as WoD just made it easier to picture for me personally.
The first sequence? Gods, I'm really going to hope you've heard 'Red Right
Hand' by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, at least once. Reading these
paragraphs, that song just played over and over in my head, and it sets the
mood brilliantly. For anyone who owns a copy of this song (which is on the
'Songs in the Key of X' album), I urge you to play it while you read this
story.
The rest of this follows brilliantly from the opener. Having, as I said
before, a reasonable working knowledge of WoD, I loved it. Shinji's
desperation, loathing of the thing he has become, and struggle to accept
that human morals may no longer apply to him, is handled exceptionally. When
he attacks Asuka, I was thinking 'Please, god, don't let him Embrace her and
turn this into an EVA/WoD cross-over!'. My prayers were answered.
Yes, the title does seem a little odd, and if it were my fic I'd consider
re-titling, but I suck at making up titles, so I can't volunteer any
suggestions.
Overall, stunning, as I've come to expect. And anticipate. And skip all the
other e-mails in my box to get to. You get the idea ^_^
