Date Sent to FFML: Sat, 22 April 2000

Summary:

An Easter/Valentine's Day story with a chocolate motif. Witness the
Eva gang deal with chocolate presents, lack of chocolate presents, and
even a chocolate Angel.

Ladies and gentlemen, witness the effects of Too Damn Much Chocolate on a
fic writer's dreams.

Bits so silly even the _characters_ can't keep a straight face... the author
had a lot of fun with this. Read it as you wolf down the last of that
life-size chocolate pooka your Aunt Myrtle put in your Easter basket.

An adfic plugging what Asuka drinks in the morning.

I'll assume that's "4/18".

Ah, what would the Eva universe be if the characters weren't all cracked? I
guess we'll never know now...

One wonders if this was inspired by "I Am Myself".

Geez, you were expecting deep philosophical commentary? It's sketch comedy,
for chrissake!

Ladies and Gentlemen, witness the awesome extravagance of the Zu School of
Textual Special Effects. This is damn creepy, and offers a wonderful means
of expressing a visual style of art in text, something I've only seen done
by the Zu before. Don't expect to be able to make sense of everything,
just... flow. And when you come to the end... _wait_. The next part is
coming soon, this reviewer hopes, beacuse even though this was the textual
equivalent of a tilt-a-whirl on acid, it's only setup.

Series: Gundam Wing
Genre: AU, Fantasy
Author: Alan Kim

Date Sent to FFML: April 8, 2000

Series Summary:

In a battle between good and evil the five protectors of Sandraline
lost to the forces of evil and their world plunged into darkness. One
hundred years later, five young mages stands up to pick up where the
Angel's of Sandraline left off, the fight to bring back the light of
goodness.

Episode Summary:

Prologue:
The final battle between the Angels of Sandraline and the Angel of
Darkness.

Chapter 1:
The first mage has been found and introduced, Heero Yuy.

Tip the first: Mail looks best in plaintext. Tip the second: Submit your
work for the synopses list the same week you send it; some of us only _keep_
a couple week's worth around because of disk space.

Tip the third: Run this sucker through a grammar checker. I stumbled over a
few more tense inconsistencies and wrongly-chosen words than I should have.
It's obvious that you've developed a very interesting altuniv premise, but
what you have here feels very vague and undefined, like an outline of the
action, and the story is more like a history book than an engaging tale.
This works alright for the first chapter, as it takes place in the past of
your timeline, but once you shift to the present you should leave the
historian's voice behind and focus more on the personalities and images and
vistas of the now, rather than simply the actions.

she will discover that in the world, there is indeed a balance.

Episode Summary:

Inaho has sealed the pact of blood with the Battousai. Her journey
has only just begun.

Ah, a story of gothic drama and angst and pathos that never manages to take
itself seriously. This _fits_ Kenshin very much, and your description is
very vivid - you may want to define a few of the Japanese sword terms you
use at the end for the ignorant reader, such as myself, but other than that
I liked it very much. Kenshin can manage to inject a bit of lightheartedness
into what would otherwise be a cue-up-Toccatta-and-Fugue dramatic scene, and
you use him very well to that effect. As I said, this _fits_, and I like the
continuation you've done so far as well. Keep writing!

Title: The 1999 Chicken Ball Awards
Genre: Awards
Author: Megane 6.7 and The CB Staff
Email: fcasper@yesic.com
Homepage: http://www.thekeep.org/~harnums/CB/

Date Sent to FFML: 4/23/00

Summary:

Come and join us as we celebrate the fanfics of 1999! These awards
honor *all* aspects of fanfiction and are each presented by a
different author, using that's author's particular brand of humor.
These awards are also accepted by the winners through an acceptance
speech and/or skit. These awards were a blast to put together and I
hope you enjoy them as much as we did writing them. C&C is always
welcome. :)

There are many ways to avoid the horrendous inconsistencies in tone that
normally come with a multi-author project.

Non-stop, fever-pitch wackiness is not one of the best of them.

To be honest, this was about half again as long as it should have been. Some
of the segments went on _way_ too long: DJ Croft macking on everything in
sight, D.F. Roeder getting the living daylights beaten out of him (and I
won't even go _into_ Onna-Ranma), Mike Rhea demonstrating the attitude that
_got_ his writing voted worst-of-show, and the Chicken Ball theme song that
I couldn't cram into scansion with a plunger, two crowbars, and the combined
weight of Yokozuna and Rikishi Fatu. To say nothing of the Chicken Cannon
itself.

Folks, _don't_ read this. Grep through for the fics that won or got
nominated, and go read _those_ off of the FFML Archive or mail the authors.

I understand what you were trying to do, but it came off as _forced_ and
not funny in too many places.

Series: Original
Genre: WAFF
Author: Jason Liao

Summary:

A young girl runs away from her mother, leaving her past behind in

it is soon to come to an end.

Note: I've been told that the sequence of event within have already

of something good enough to be published, and sad that it's already
been done.

Heh. You do have to admit, though, the idea would make an excellent visual
story. You can't fully appreciate the incongruity without some sort of
visual representation. Even given the limitations of the medium, this is
still a great story, one that will shut your brain down for a moment when it
takes its first big twist and bring it back laughing when the second one
comes along. Definitely read if you've got a few free minutes.

Series Summary:

Ranma is the best. It goes without saying, right? But what if Ranma
wasn't?

Episode Summary:

Ranma and Genma arrive at the Tendo dojo to fulfill the promise to
marry Ranma to one of the Tendos. Ranma hasn't changed, but he's about
to run into a world of changes.

Read the fix that shows up on April 20. It's the only one I have... don't
know what happened to the old one.

Say what you will about Ranma losing; he is fighting at a bit of a
disadvantage the first time. And... well, to put it in D&D terms, there's a
half-million experience points between, say, a level 12 fighter and a level
13 fighter, but you'd be really hard-pressed to say which of them would have
the advantage in a straight fight.

I _do_ like the way that the change is more than just this-changes-Akane. It
changes _all_ the Tendos, and it will be interesting to see the effects of
just _those_ changes, to say nothing of what happens when all the _other_
characters from Ranma'a past start showing up. So... keep it coming, is all
I have to say, and I look forward to future installments.

Ranma-as-woman - sort of.

Episode Summary:

It's the last two chapters of the story. You think I'm going to give
you spoilers?

Ah. A very nice end to... gad, _how_ long ago did you folks start this?
You'd think there'd be a lot more continuity hiccups than the approximately
none I found looking through this.

You're going to want to read the prior parts if you haven't already, because
this makes _no_ sense otherwise. Mmm. I think this _is_ the first "Ranma
becomes a girl" fic that's come to a satisfying ending... might be wrong on
that, but the ending definitely _does_ wrap up the story very well.

It's just... well, it might just be my own slant, but the fic seems to swap
between lighthearted humor and Deep Psychological Meaning That Should Have
Capitals On. And sometimes it doesn't quite work... it's hard to reconcile a
profound unveiling of the self with a simultaneous mental image of a man in
samurai armor carrying a squirtgun. That's really the only problem I have
with this ending; it tries to tug at the heartstrings, but mine weren't real
ly as wrapped up in the story as perhaps they should have been and it came
off as overblown.

(N.B.) This chapter has been revised since it was originally
posted. Please visit the page above to read the current version.

Visit the page... agh. Navy blue links on a dark black background... change
them, _please_!

Ranma doesn't learn, does he?

No, I didn't think so. I find it rather difficult to believe he could have
managed to keep up his male form for eight years without ever getting caught
off-guard once. It _is_ nice to know he and Ryoga aren't taking this as
seriously as the prior generation did... of course, such things are lost on
the _next_ generation, who don't realize their folks are just quoting.

How'd Ti Pi end up with a curse? Isn't Jusenkyo an Amazon _punishment_? I
appreciate the need to keep a certain sort of symmetry about the casts, but
there are a couple plot points you expect the reader to believe that...
well, that I didn't.

Series Summary:

Akanes makes a wish after the death of Ranma and ends up returning to
the day she met him. This time she plans not to repeat any of her
mistakes. (Just make a bunch of new ones.)

Episode Summary:

After Akane 'finds' a scroll detailing a martial arts technique, Ranma
and Akane get to learn it.

To be honest... this isn't as good as it could have been. The end felt a bit
hastily done and unpolished, like an outline instead of a whole piece. I
can't give it any description more definite than that... it just seems to
lack the zing that earlier installments of the series had.

Then again, it's been a while since I've _read_ the series, and I'm going
through finals now (they're nearly done)... but it seems like there could be
more than just what there is as Akane starts learning the technique, and
especially in that stretch of dialogue at the very end. It comes a bit too
easily, considering what it concerns.

_This_ you call original flavor? Then again, given the utter wackiness of

further than that, so all I'll say is to read it. You will laugh.

Series Summary:

For so-far unexplained reasons, Ranma's curse has her as an
aqua-trans-hermaphrodite. It's hard to summarize without being crude.
As with many lemons, she is having sex with a lot of the cast. In
this alternate universe, she's engaged to both Nabiki and Kasumi.

Episode Summary:

Nabiki and Kasumi are upset with Ranma for having had sex with Ryouga
last episode, and so punish her. Again, details are hard to provide
without becoming crass, or at least without forcing the author to go
take a cold shower before hitting the 'send' button.

What do you meaningfully say about a fic geared for porn?

Not bloody much, I imagine. Some of the kinks are new, but I've seen this
general outline... at least twice before. "Lemonade Punch" and "Lemon
Sherbet", I think; then again, it's been a while since I did any real
lemon-for-lemon's sake reading. Enough exposure to the opposite end of the
genre, involving gratutious blood and occasionally the mental equivalent of
fuming nitric acid, has more or less killed the appropriate pathways.

Then again, it's been a rather long while since anyone's done
lemon-for-lemon's sake, at least in my own memory, and all the participants
are consenting and human. Is Y2K the Year of the Lemon? Who knows.

Segment Summary:

In the past, Ranma eats a very special salad... made by Akane! The
consequences are dire--very much so. Back in Macross, Ranma meets
Minmei, Max, Lena, Jason, Guardian and Battloid. Who do you think made
the best impression?

You _really_ need to read this over. Missing words and awkward phrases
cropped up in the first bit, and that'll put any reader off...

But as for the action, it's very well described, as far as some of it _can_
be described, but you do the indescribable bits well. Your version of Ranma
talks a bit too smoothly in places... I'd look into that. But it will be
interesting to see exactly what Ranma's capable of in a Veritech... next
chapter. This one was a bit shorter, in terms of plot points and such, than
the first, and we still haven't really _gotten_ anywhere. Hopefully, the
next part will change that...

Huh. Interesting premise, has been since the first part, and now we start
winding down to the meat of the plot. The description... could use a bit of
work. I'm calling up images out of the darker recesses of my own mind for
most if not all of the rooms, and I have no idea if any of them are right or

Series Summary:

This story takes place between the time the SDF-3 (along with Rick
Hunter and Lisa Hayes) has departed for the homeworld of the Robotech
Masters and the rise of the Army of the Southern Cross. The world
government is in shambles, militaristic city-states are popping up all

he must raise, train, and position one last Veritech squadron.

Episode Summary:

Colonel Stuart tries to retire. General Emerson not only refuses his
retirement request but tasks him with forming a badly needed Veritech
squadron to man a base in one of the worst corners of the North

Colonel Stuart is finished. His first 'recruits' are not exactly what

Series Summary:

Written in first-person perspective, Bishoujou Senshi Sailor Gemini is
an alternate universe in which 12 otaku (11 girls, and one guy) find
themselves endowed with the powers of the Sailor Senshi. A mixture of
parody and serious storytelling that pokes fun at Sailor Moon,
otakufics, and the trials of the gender-changing adolescent male in
anime...

Chapter Summary:

Gemini gets in a fight! Trouble at the con, and our new Senshi don't
quite know how to use these powers with which they've been endowed.
Also, the introduction of two more Senshi expands the circle.

You know... this is actually a pretty realistic treatment. I'm surprised at
how the fic manages to touch base with the "real world" so often, given the
archetypal nature of its content. There's a definite, almost palpable sense
that what's happening is... genuine. I can't describe it any better than
that, but it's a refreshing thing to see.

I still feel sorry for Halebit. He's just nuts, and he desperately wants to

::ahem::

<fanboy> WHOOOOOOOOO! EXCELLENT! </fanboy>

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Flashback Done Right. _Almost_ as hard to
pull off as flash-forward done right, as in the recent chapter of Virgo that
explained where the Outers were anyway when the Black Moon attacked. It was
a very nice and suspenseful ending series of scenes, letting me suspend my
knowledge that of course things would turn out alright, more or less, in
lieu of getting caught up in an edge-of-your-seat plot. Who says history has
to be boring?

Very nice ending sequence, though unless the series goes on from here I
think the final chapter of the saga _before_ makes an appropriate closer to
the series.

Although I'd really prefer having the series go on from here, all told; the
author does some excellent things with the mixed cast, and I heartily
recommend you go check them out.

Ladies and gentlemen... COMEDY!

Of course, you'll really have to see most if not all of the separate

This series has a lot of potential for humorous misunderstandings, but also
for touching moments, and I hope the author sees fit to put some of each in

things considered; the concept can be played for humor value, but it's also
got potential for other angles as well.

Summary:

Sasami and Tsunami are going to become one. Before that happens,
Sasami has some things she wants to experience. Hijinx ensue. (2 of 3
parts; 3rd part being written)

Ah, Mr. Davies, where have you been?

And how quickly can you get back there?

Just kidding on that last part, of course, but this is very much a Davies
lemon. Meaning, don't look too hard through the canon for justification -
not that you'd ever need it for most lemon setups to begin with.

But there's a great deal of humor in the non-lemon parts. Davies has a
wonderful ability to write a story that doesn't take itself seriously. And
you'll probably laugh a few times. Probably. Anyway, just read it, and
page-down past the ecchi parts if they're not your thing.

*************

So. Another week down, and the next one will catch me at home. Hopefully,
I'll still be able to find the time each week to do these. Can't think of
much to plug at the moment, except fifty ways to make money off the
Internet, and that would get me summarily list-booted if I did.

Until next time, everyone.
