Part 8  "Triumphs and Tribulations"

Having just finished eating her breakfast, little Raye Hino
reached up from her position at the table and returned the hug she was
getting from Chad. For added effect, she gave him a kiss, albeit a
slightly sloppy one -- Raye had been eating cereal. To his credit, Chad
didn't wipe it off. He, instead, gave Raye a kiss on the forehead.
"Now you be good for Grandpa, Pumpkin," Chad told his young
charge, "And I'll see you tonight when I come home."
"O-kay... but I wanna come with ya, Chad."
"I know," the acolyte said with a grin, "But you have to go to
school."
"I don't like school," the six year old remarked sulkily. It
wasn't true but she wanted to go with Chad.
Chad crouched down and asked, "Man, I thought you liked school."
"Lita ain't at my school," Raye stated before adding, "'Sides,
it's stupid."
"I have to go," Chad said and, giving Raye another quick hug,
left the room. After a moment or so, in which Raye realized that sulking
wasn't going to accomplish anything, she ran after Chad to try something
else.

<Pegasus...> Serena reflected, <That flight was SOOO much fun!>
She hadn't wanted to wake up from that dream. Absently, she moved her
toothbrush a little more before yawning expansively. <Is this what
Reenie...>
       "Serena!"
"Wha?" She snapped out of her daydream and turned to find Reenie
regarding her with mild exasperation.
"You're drooling toothpaste all over your pajamas," Reenie
huffed, "Jeez, even my Serena ain't this messy." Before Serena could
even respond, the eight year old continued, "I said you shoulda punished
me."
       "Huh?!"
"Okay, not me. I mean the other me, your little sister."
"Oh yeah, Reenie, like Mommy would ever lemme do that!"
<Eew!> the pink haired girl winced as yet more toothpaste
dribbled out of Serena's mouth. She was about to try and clean Serena up
a little when her words connected. She frowned and said, "You did
before." Reenie's frown deepened and she asked, "You weren't fibbing,
were you?"
"NO!" the little girl replied, "It's just... I'm not really
s'pposed to punish you 'n' stuff." Sticking the toothbrush into her
mouth again and brushing vigorously, Serena mumbled out, "'Sides, Mommy
always takes your side." The older girl was giving her a rather dubious
look so she pulled her toothbrush out before elaborating, "I got yelled
at for falling into the lake and it was all Reenie's fault!" The child
looked towards her older sister with annoyance. <Shoot! I didn't wanna
tell you about my problems!> Fortunately, she had only told Reenie about
the incident at the lake.
Luckily for Serena, her mother called out, "Serena! Reenie! Come
and get dressed for school or you'll be late."
"'KAY!" Serena called back and bounded out of the bathroom.
"Serena! Wait!" Reenie called out but the blonde girl was out of
sight. <Is she this messy at home?> she wondered. <At least my little
sister knows how to brush her teeth!> After all, Reenie had been the one
who had taught her.

"I wonder where they are?" Mina complained to Carrie, "Serena
forgets sometimes but Lita 'n' Amy ain't here either."
"There's Serena," Carrie answered and pointed over towards the
school entrance. Mina turned to find Serena and Reenie arriving on the
school grounds. Serena had a smug looking expression on her face.
       "HI-EE!" both children chorused.
"Hi Mina. Hi Carrie," Serena squeaked. Breaking away from her
sister, she ran over to them. Reenie continued on to where Melissa was
waiting.
"You look happy, Serena. Whatcha do?" Carrie asked.
"Sammy got in trouble!" Serena gloated, "He was pickin' on me
and Daddy was right behind him." She giggled, "I asked if Sammy wasn't
scared of Daddy 'n' Sammy said no."
"What'd your daddy do?" Carrie questioned in anticipation.
"He yelled," Serena giggled, "And Sammy turned a funny color."
Looking around, she asked, "Hey... Where's Amy 'n' Lita?"
"Dunno," Mina admitted and then added, "Diana and Luna were
arguing, and they woke me up."
"They can't talk... They're only kitties," Carrie pointed out.
She was six after all, not a baby!
"Can so," Serena argued. Serena was not about to let a little
kid tell her what she knew was perfectly possible.
       "Can not," Carrie countered.
Mina looked between Serena and Carrie wondering which one she
should help. Sighing a little, she decided to go with her loyalties and
declared, "I can't believe you fell for it!"
       "You little spore," Serena replied.
"My hair ain't pink." Serena would have launched into an angry
retort but a commotion at the entrance distracted her.

Arriving at school wearing a very outlandish, and overly large,
hat was one way to attract attention. Lita, having actually convinced
Amy to wear the thing, was now regretting her decision.
<At least, Amy's in a better mood.> It had helped that Lita had
procured the hat for her sister. <Gosh!> she giggled, <She looks
ridiculous wearing that thing.> It had taken a lot of tissue paper to
keep it from dropping down and covering her whole head.
"You got it?!" one child questioned. Lita recognized him from
the day before. As she looked around, she saw several other children she
recognized.
"Yep!" Amy boasted, "We scared that old ghost but good!"
"Yeah?" a little girl questioned, "What'd it look like?"
"We only saw a kitty's ghost," Lita jumped in before Amy could
respond.
"There were two?" That was the first child. Lita nodded. "Wow!"
       "Ghosts?"
"Hiya Serena!" Amy chirped. Turning to her friend and striking a
model's pose, she asked, "Like it?" while pointing to the hat.
"Where did you get it, Amy?"
"We fought this mean ol' ghost for it," Amy gushed, "We walked
right up to that ol' house and went inside." This statement sent a
ripple through the assembled crowd of children.
       "But weren't ya scared?"
Amy looked at the little girl for a moment then smiled. "Hiya
Kimmy. Nah, I poked that old ghost in the nose." Kimmy's eyes enlarged.
"It got scared of me!" Her friend's eyes were now so big they looked
like they'd burst.
"When did you go?" Mina wondered. She was looking suspiciously
at Amy.
"Last night, we snuck out," Amy answered.
       "What?" Serena questioned.
"Mommy thought we were sleepin' but we fooled her and snuck out
the window," Amy explained.
"That wasn't very nice," Kimmy remarked. Amy just gave her a
large grin before turning her back to talk to the others.
<At least, she didn't tell them we got caught!> Lita thought.
When one little boy asked if their mommy was mad, Amy went even further
out onto a limb and said that the opposite was true and their mother was
actually proud of them. <Oh man...> She shifted uncomfortably when
Serena gave her a very critical look.
"Let's go find that kid and tell 'im we got the hat!" Amy
declared. <I can't wait to see his face.> The younger kids sent up a
cheer.
<Thank you!> Lita thought when the bell rang, thereby derailing
Amy's plans.
"Come on, Sis," Amy began, "I'm gonna go to your class." With
that, Amy struck out for the school building, a mass of the younger kids
following her, all the while listening avidly to Amy detailing, and
exaggerating, her and Lita's nocturnal adventure.
"Lita, what's with Amy?" Serena asked. This was not the studious
and shy teen she knew.
"She's just happy we got the hat," her friend responded. <Boy is
that the truth. You'd think we just climbed Mt. Everest!>
"Your mommy was PROUD of ya?" Serena highly doubted this. Lita
looked away and blushed. "What happened?"
       "She yelled," Lita admitted.
       "Just that?" Serena questioned.
"Er... no," the little girl replied and then pleaded silently,
<Please, Serena, just stop asking.> If her friends found out she had
been spanked, she would never hear the end of it.
<I know what my mommy would have...> Then, it hit her. "Oh..."
Serena said with a knowing look which made Lita wish she could crawl
under a rock.
As she and Serena came into their classroom, she nearly fell
over from shock when she heard Amy telling their teacher that she would
be staying with Lita today.
"What's with that hat?" Serena wondered out loud. "It's majorly
ugly." She had never seen her blue haired friend so proud of anything
before outside of getting accepted to that special school in Germany
last year.
Lita commented in a soft voice, "Actually, it's just funny
looking."

"Amy," the teacher was saying with restrained patience, "Please
return to your own classroom."
"But my sis is here, silly. I wanna be with Lita." She gave him
what she considered her best winning smile. "'N' I'm little..."
"You know that you can't stay here."
       "Yes, I can!" Amy declared.
"Young lady, please go to your own class."
"But I wanna stay here!" she whined. A few children in the class
giggled nervously.
       "Miss Anderson, please leave NOW."
"No." The class rustled at this statement. The teacher literally
towered over Amy, who simply looked up in defiance at him.
"This is your last warning. Do I have to send you to the
principal's office?"
Amy opened her mouth and then closed it again. <The principal
will phone Mommy...> A little chill ran through her, <And Mommy would be
really mad.> While her bottom wasn't sore, the spanking was still fresh
in her mind.
She tried the more conciliatory approach. "I'll be really,
REALLY, quiet. Honest."
       "Amy Anderson..."
<I don't want another spanking...> Nevertheless, given her
mother's mood, Amy wasn't sure what her mother would do if she caused
trouble. She looked over to Lita who seemed to have been following the
same pattern of thought.
       "Bye Sis," Lita said cheerily.
       "Bye Amy!"
Amy blinked. <Oh, so she's in this class...> Sure enough, her
swimming buddy from Saturday was in the classroom. <I wondered why I
never noticed her around here before?> "Okay..." she said to the
teacher, "I'll go."
       "Thank you," the teacher replied.
"Bye Lita," Amy called and left the room.

"Amy's actin' really weird," Carrie told her blonde friend as
they walked into their classroom.
"Yeah, Care-Care, Ames is always weird," Mina joked. Carrie
giggled. "I hope Serena'll play with us at recess."
"Yeah!" Carrie agreed, "Mina, I wanna be Queen Beryl this time."
"Huh?!?" Mina questioned. She was so startled by the statement
that she missed her desk chair and plopped down unceremoniously onto the
floor.
       "You okay?"
"Yeah... Who did you say you wanna be when we play?"
When Carrie repeated her earlier statement, Mina could feel a
ball of dread form in the pit of her stomach. <When I get a hold of
Serena...>
"She's neat!" Carrie gushed, "Not like Sailor Moon but really
neat!" Serena's portrayal of her was very impressive yesterday. Mina
couldn't believe her ears. She was just trying to think of a way to
squash her friend's plans when Amy walked into the room.
"IT IS I, AMY ANDERSON!" Amy announced with a flourish. The
entire class stared in bewilderment at her.
"Amy Anderson..." her teacher stated while checking Amy's name
off on the attendance sheet without looking up. Then deciding to see if
Lita had followed her sister, she looked up and noticed the garish hat
Amy was sporting. "What on earth..."
"THE GREAT GHOST HUNTER!" Amy continued while dipping in a low
bow, sweeping her hat to one side. This set the other children to
giggling. The teacher let out a sigh. She knew that it would be a very
long day.
"The world's coming to an end," she muttered out. If her star
pupil was starting to act like Mina, then the world was definitely going
to end.
"Don't worry," Amy said with a grin, "I'll save it." Carrie
rolled her eyes.
"Please sit down, Amy, and take off that hat."
"'Kay," she agreed and sauntered majestically to an empty desk.

During lunch, Lita and Amy Anderson went in search of the
braggart that had challenged them yesterday. Lita decided to stop trying
to play down their triumphs, although she still felt shy about revealing
what her mother had had to say on the subject. She didn't feel
comfortable in telling the other kids that their mother was proud like
Amy was loudly proclaiming. That was outright fibbing. On the other
hand, she would feel even worse telling them exactly what happened. So,
for the most part, she remained silent and let her sister tell the tale.
Another factor in Lita's silence was that she felt guilty for
allowing Amy to get hurt. Her mother had been right in that it was her
responsibility. Amy, for her part, was taking it in stride. In fact, she
was showing off her scraped knee as if it were a type of battle trophy.
A few minutes later, Amy and her growing entourage of little
kids, which by now included Kimmy, found the braggart with a couple of
his fourth grade friends. "So I guess you didn't go," he jibed once he
saw them.
"Sure, we did," Amy squeaked proudly and taking the hat from
behind her, plopped it onto her head.
"I bet it's one of your mommy's," he remarked dismissively.
       "You sayin' my sister's fibbing?"
       "No."
"Me 'n' Lita did so go to the Johnston place. And there just
wasn't one ghost, but her cat was one too!"
"Yeah right, LITTLE GIRL. What did this `ghost cat´ look like?"
"It had big claws and glowing green eyes and was this big," Lita
stated with a grin holding her arms out wide, "And it even tried to eat
us."
"Really Lita?" one awed young girl in the group gasped, "What'd
ya do?"
"We poked it in the nose and it ran away."
"And I got this!" Amy announced and stuck out her leg so the
children could see her bandaged knee.
       "You're lying."
"Amy doesn't fib," Kimmy stated in defense of her friend.
"Your mommy wouldn't let you go," the braggart insisted while
ignoring Kimmy. He sounded a little desperate.
"No, but we snuck out anyways," Lita replied with an evil grin,
"We weren't afraid and we got your stupid hat. That old ghost wasn't
even scary at all. It was scared of us!"
"Mommy was really mad though," Amy confessed, "She came in and
woke us up this morning." Lita turned pale. Her sister wouldn't tell
them about their punishment, would she? Amy, seeing her audience was
listening to her captively, continued, "So she..."
"I thought you said your mommy was proud," the braggart
interrupted.
"She is," Amy replied and gestured towards the hat. "Mommy was
mad 'cause we didn't tell her first."
"Yeah right." Turning and waving his hand dismissively, the
older boy started walking away. This was getting to be a no-win
situation. Lita was relieved.
"You big baby!" Amy shouted. Unseen by Amy, Kimmy and some of
the smaller children shuffled back a few steps.
"Sis, what are you doing?!" Lita demanded in a harsh whisper.
The braggart had stopped and turned back to glare at Amy.
"This story too scary for you, huh?"
       "You're making it up!"
       "No, we're not!"
       "Then tell everything."
"'Kay," Amy agreed. Lita groaned as Amy began to recount a
detailed story, enhancing it as she went along. She groaned even more
when she noticed that Serena had come over to see what all the fuss was
all about. Even Reenie was listening from a distance, although the older
girl was pretending to ignore everybody but Melissa.

Amy, grinning from ear to ear, floated out of the school
entrance after school had let out that day. Even Mina was impressed with
her performance although the blonde complained that Amy should have
invited her along.
"Yeah and then Diana would've tattled to Reenie," Lita pointed
out, "Come on, guys, I wanna go play with Raye." Having said that, she
started off down the street praying that Amy would shut up.
"Lita, wait for us," Reenie requested. "I think it was
dangerous." They took enough risks as Sailor Scouts already.
       "So did Mommy," Amy admitted.
"I don't think I've ever heard your mommy yell," Serena pointed
out.
"Well, she just didn't yell," Amy replied. <See, I'm not a
bookworm!>
"Did she stand ya in a corner?" Mina questioned.
"Yes!" Lita said sharply, "Raye's waitin'. Now, come on." She
started to walk faster. Reenie picked up her pace to catch up with Lita
while looking back over her shoulder now and then.
"I guess that's why you didn't call then," Serena speculated, "I
bet your mommy was worried 'bout you, huh?"
"Nah, we went to sleep," Amy retorted. "So, what's the problem?"
she asked in a quieter voice deciding it was time to be more serious.
Serena gave Lita a worried look and then said very softly, "Lita
died."
"WHAT?!?!" Mina and Amy screeched. Reenie and Lita came to a
halt and looked back at the other girls.
"Jeez, guys, tone it down," Serena warned softly. She then
smiled and said in a louder voice, "I was just tellin' them what Sammy
said."
"Oh," both Reenie and Lita commented before starting to walk
again.
Making sure Reenie and Lita weren't listening, Serena continued,
"Yeah, that's what Reenie told me."
"Dead?" Mina hissed, "No way... Reenie must've got it wrong."
"But maybe that's why Lita didn't come..." Serena offered, then
amended, "I don't know how Lita came back." She missed Amy's nervous
look. "I thought it might be reincarnation like before but that took the
Silver Crystal." She looked expectantly at her blue haired friend who
didn't respond. "Ames, what's the matter? You knew that you'd be with
this universe's Lita."
"That's right, and you two get along really good," Mina
observed.
"But Lita isn't Lita," Amy replied.
       "Huh?" both blondes asked.
"I mean, this Lita isn't this universe's Lita. She's our Lita."
       "WHAT?!?!"
This time, Reenie halted and walked back to where the three
girls had stopped.
       "What's the problem?"
"You mean," Serena asked ignoring Reenie's question, "That's OUR
Lita? Like the one I thought got left behind?!" When Amy nodded, Serena
rushed past Reenie and hugged Lita. "I'm so glad to see you, Lita! I was
like majorly worried..." The brunette hugged Serena back while grinning.
"No..." Reenie gasped in shock. <It can't be.>
"I'm afraid so. Lita and I thought it'd be funny to trick you."
The little girl blushed furiously and looked at the ground. "Sorry."
       <You tricked me!> Reenie thought, <But why...>
       "I hope you're not mad."
"Nah, is was a good trick!" Mina replied. Serena nodded in
agreement.
"But what about Lita?" Reenie questioned.
"Well," Amy speculated, "Our Lita wouldn't come back if the
other Lita wasn't alive and..."
"I don't feel like a ghost," Lita chimed in inspecting her hands.
Mina giggled, ran over, and gave Lita's cheek a quick lick. "She
don't taste like a ghost either."
       "EEWWW!!!!" the other girls cried.
"That's like MAJORLY GROSS, Mina," Serena added, "You don't know
where she's been."
"Hey!" Lita squawked, "I take baths!"
"Mina, that's gross. Do it again and I'll have to tell your
Mommy," Reenie admonished. Mina stuck her tongue out at the pink haired
girl. <Can't they be serious?> "Now come on or we'll be late."
       <What am I gonna do?> Reenie thought sadly a moment later, <Raye
will be crushed.> Things were getting complicated.
"Anyway... I don't think she's a ghost," Amy announced in an
attempt to get them back on topic.
"And Amy knows all about ghosts," Serena giggled.
"Yeah, MY sis sure does," Lita replied and started walking down
the street again. The little blonde hurried to catch up to Lita so she
could talk.
"Okay, girlfriend," Mina began, "I want you to spill all the
juicy details 'bout this adventure, and how come you didn't bring me
along?"
"Oh yeah, like I'm gonna call you and say, `Hey, Mina, we're
sneaking out... why don't ya come?´ with Diana around," Amy remarked
sarcastically. Reenie followed behind, lost within her own thoughts.

Since the gathering at the Cherry Hill Temple was not really an
"official" Scout meeting, the girls quickly broke up into their normal
playgroups. Reenie sat quietly on the porch watching the little girls
play. While Mina and Amy played together, Lita informed Raye of her
previous night's adventure.
Feeling a little less inhibited around Raye about what had
occurred, Lita tried to heighten the suspense. She also corrected a few
of the earlier misstatements that her sister had made, mainly where Amy
saving her was concerned. Serena was still horrified by what the
Anderson twins had done and she kept looking at Amy as if she expected
her blue haired friend to grow another head. Raye was in awe of Lita's
escapades; nonetheless, her nose was also out of joint.
"Lita, you shoulda took me," Raye pouted, "I never go nowhere."
"But their mommy got mad at them," Serena countered, "My mommy
would have been really mad."
"Well, Mommy WAS mad," Lita said, "And she put us in a corner
'n' stuff."
"Don't you just hate that," Mina remarked more to Amy than to
the others.
"Mommy did more than that, Mina," Amy replied with a grin.
       "Amy..." Lita warned.
       "Oh yeah?" Mina questioned.
"Yeah..." Lita snapped sternly before turning back to her
friends. "I would've took you," Lita consoled Raye, "But Chad woulda got
mad at you 'n' stuff."
Serena, knowing exactly what her friends had done, and also
suspecting what Mrs. Anderson had done, intoned, "Mommy woulda told
Daddy and I woulda got in big trouble."
       "It's a good thing I don't have a daddy then," Lita commented
and shot a nervous look towards Amy and Mina, both little girls were
whispering to each other. When she turned her gaze back to Raye, she
noticed that her young friend had a wistful look on her face. "What?"
"I wanna daddy," Raye said sadly.
       "You got a grandpa."
"But he's old," Raye argued, "I want Chad to be my daddy."
"Really?" Serena asked. Raye nodded. "Did you tell him?"
When Raye shook her head, Lita inquired, "Are ya scared?" Her
friend nodded. "You think he'd go away, huh?" The six year old gave her
a large smile. <I got that right!> "Did you tell Grandpa?"
       "Why?"
"Uh..." Lita didn't have an answer for that one.
"'Cause if you want Chad to be your daddy," Serena jumped in,
"Then Chad's gotta have Grandpa as a daddy."
       "Why?"
"Just 'cause," the little girl replied.
"But Chad's got a mommy and a daddy... He went to see 'em,"
Raye countered with a scowl.
"Just ask Grandpa Hino," Lita suggested again, "He might not
want Chad as your daddy."
"Oh..." Raye said as if her friend had just explained everything
perfectly. Serena gave Lita an annoyed look.

"There's Darien's car," Reenie exclaimed as she and her little
sister approached the Tsukino home.
"Wow..." Serena squeaked, "It looks so big!" Indeed, it looked
even more impressive than she remembered. Then she blinked and
continued, "Who got that wicked cool color?!" The car was bright banana
yellow.
Reenie grinned down at her and explained, "You talked Darien
into it."
<I did?> Serena thought, <Oh... maybe I should try that with my
Darien.> She giggled then. She just couldn't see her very serious Darien
driving in a yellow sportscar.
As they came into the Tsukino front yard, the front door opened.
There standing in the entranceway was Darien Shields, sporting his
typical slacks and black jacket. <Ghad!> Serena thought, <I never
realized how ugly that jacket is.> She'd have to remedy that when she
got back.
"UNCLE DARIEN!" Reenie shouted and letting go of Serena's hand,
ran forward and leapt up into her father's arms.
<`Uncle Darien´?!?> the six year old wondered.
"Hello Reenie," Darien said while giving his future daughter a
large hug. "Did you have a good day at school?"
Reenie nodded then demanded, "Guess what!"
       "What?" Darien asked.
"I'm gonna be the hostess for the school's bake sale." Hugging
him around the neck, she said, "Are ya gonna come, Uncle Darien?"
"Of course, I am," he replied. Reenie giggled, then gave him a
peck on the cheek before wiggling out of his arms and trotting into the
house. Serena by this point had come to stand in front of Darien. He
bent down and scooped her up. "And how is my princess today?"
"Good," Serena squeaked and gave him a hug. She snuggled a
little bit when he hugged her back. It felt like hugging her father.
"You came for supper?"
"Yes, I did," Darien answered as he entered into the house and
closed the door.
"You look nice, Darien," Serena said tentatively.
"And you're very pretty." She giggled at the compliment.
"Serena, go and change out of your school clothes," her mother
told her, "And then you can come and help Reenie set the table."
"'Kay Mommy," Serena agreed. She gave Darien another hug,
slipped from his arms, and hurried up the stairs after her big sister.

After having eaten a very enjoyable supper, Serena found herself
sitting on Darien's lap in the front room. <This is so strange,> Serena
thought as she sat on Darien's knee. Daddy and him are friends!> She was
interested to know how her future husband and her father had become
friends. It was such a drastic change from the norm that she just had to
find out.
       "Darien?"
       "Yes, Princess?" he asked.
       "How come you're daddy's friend?"
Darien chuckled and hugged her, "Shouldn't I be your daddy's
friend?"
"Yeah!" Serena chirped. <I didn't mean that!> "Just how come
you're daddy's friend?"
"Well, your daddy and I work together, Princess," Darien
explained. Serena felt love touch her as Darien smiled down at her. "I
started working at the paper after I graduated high school and I've been
there ever since."
       "Oh..."
"Uncle Darien," Reenie said as she came into the room.
       "Hmmm?"
"Would you get us a movie?"
"Reenie," Ken began sternly, "Darien was invited to supper."
Reenie flushed and said, "Sorry." She then walked over and
hopped up onto Ken's knee. <That's majorly weird,> Serena thought, <I
thought Reenie'd want to sit by Darien.> However, the older girl seemed
content to sit with her father. <And what's with this Uncle Darien bit?>
There was no way her Reenie would call him "Uncle Darien".
"Darien's a hard worker, Serena," Ken said into the silence that
had fallen over the room, "He's worked hard at school and now he has a
very good job."
"I like school, 'cept if it's hard," Serena whined. Darien
chuckled which set her to giggling. <I feel so different around this
Darien.> This one felt more like a father than a boyfriend. She wiggled
back a little further and was rewarded when he gave her a slightly
firmer hug. "I like your car," Serena commented.
       "Really?"
"Can we go for a ride?"
"That sounds like an idea," her father agreed, "You were telling
me you just had her tuned up. Does she run any better?"
"Oh yes, Ken. Thanks for suggesting that garage," Darien
replied. "So, Reenie, do you wanna come for a ride with us?"
"Can we get a movie too?"
"No," Ken stated. Lifting Reenie off his lap, he added, "You can
head upstairs and do your homework."
"Aw... Uncle Ken," Reenie whined. The rest of her complaint was
lost on Serena as Darien picked her up and carried her out of the room
to put on her shoes and jacket.

<Mommy had to throw out those overalls,> Amy thought as she lay
in bed that evening. <Lita was so brave saying she had "accidentally"
put them on and they had ripped.> Mrs. Anderson had scolded them a
little more on their late night adventure but that was all that
happened.
"Ames," Lita said softly, "Thanks for not tellin' the others
'bout us getting spanked."
"I think they know anyways," Amy speculated. She was sure Serena
did and the odds were good the others had guessed as well. "'N' 'sides,
I knew you didn't want me to." She turned to see the worry in Lita's
eyes. "What's wrong, Sis?"
"I'm sorry you got hurt," Lita apologized, "'N' I'm glad Mommy
spanked me. I shoulda kept ya from getting hurt."
"I didn't think Mommy would do that," Amy said, "I can't 'member
her ever doin' that."
"My parents would've," Lita admitted solemnly, "I 'member one
time when I was little we were on a picnic and I kept wandering off."
She was quiet for a long time before adding, "That last time, my daddy
came looking for me." She giggled then.
"You make it sound like fun."'
"I thought it was a game like tag... I thought it was fun until
I got caught." If anything, her parents tried to be understanding of her
misadventures.
It became quiet and it was several seconds before Amy remarked,
"You miss them, don't you?"
"Yeah," the brunette replied softly. She sniffled a little as
Amy hugged her. Sleep did not come to her though. When she heard her
sister's soft breathing, she slipped from her bed, walked over to the
door, and left the room. She felt lonely.
She knew that Amy was there but this was a loneliness that a
sister couldn't remove. Sniffling a little, she padded down the hallway
to her mother's room and entered it.
"Lita, what are you doing up?" Mrs. Anderson wondered from her
position on the bed.
"I don't feel good, Mommy," Lita stated while walking over to
the bed and crawling up onto it. "Can I stay with you?" She looked
pleadingly at the woman.
"Sure you can, dear," her mother agreed softly, "Now come under
the covers." She then asked, "Is Amy with you?"
"She's sleepin'," Lita answered. She then crawled under the
covers before snuggling close to her mother. She gave a little sigh as
Mrs. Anderson hugged her. <Mommy.... I love you.>
