There's a story that behind this that involves reality on the "Furry Mucks",
dislike of Anthromorphics, MiSTings, Web Site #9, and an overactive
imagination. But since I have a go ahead from the Admins (I really need to
remember to E-mail them privately next time I have a question. . .) and
you're probably wondering just what I can do with Sonic, (or even if you're
not,) I'm going to get right to it.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
This is how (I believe) a fic for Sonic the Hedgehog should look. I call it,
Armageddon.
Shall we begin?
******************
Twenty years Ago.......
Abrahamus Acorn, King of the Western Continent of Mobius, turned from the
window to look at the strange beings behind him.
"You say you are from...beyond the sun?" He asked carefully. The largest one
nodded.
"Yes. This is the first planet we have found with non human sentient life
forms."
"Non....Human?" Abrahamus asked, tilting his head. The being nodded.
"Our species name for ourselves is Human." He paused. "I suppose the term
protosimian is the most scientific way to describe it."
"So your people are descended from the ape. Doctor...."
"Goodink." The being replied. "Doctor Ivo Goodink." He indicated the smaller
human beside him. "My assistant, Doctor Simon Snivelas." he indicated the
third one. "And my wife, Pamela."

Ten years ago.....
He approached the machine, carefully opening the panel and loosening the
chip...a small unimportant chip. He carefully replaced it with a fake chip
and closed the panel. He looked at the chip in his hand. Hard to believe
something so small and unimportant could be so dangerous. He giggled. Now to
crush it. It was then he heard footsteps. Blast! He ran for it, the chip
falling out of his hand and skidding to come to a stop under the machine.

Five years ago.....
Samuel Barrows tossed and turned in his bed. He couldn't sleep. Graduation
and his doctorate in biophysics were but a week away and his nerves were all
but shot.
Muttering to himself, he flung the covers away and headed for the lab,
pausing briefly to watch the lighting flash as the summer thunderstorm
rumbled by. He would be more then happy when the muggy weather was over.
"Ah Samuel." Goodink greeted him. "Can't sleep?" Samuel nodded.
"Nerves." Goodink chuckled.
"I was much the same way when the time came for my graduation. Ah, to be
young once more." He opened up a drawer and produced a box. "Your graduation
gift." Samuel took the box and opened it. Inside lay a pair of red sneakers.
"Self Repairing running shoes." Goodink said. "Considering all the running
you do, I thought it might save you some money."
"Thanks Doc." Samuel said, sitting on the stool and pulling the shoes on. He
stomped his feet a few times to settle them in and then tied the laces tight.
"Way past cool!" He exclaimed, sounding more like a kid then the doctor he
was about to become.
Then as was his habit, he began a manual check of the machine that held the
Chaos Emeralds prisoner. For a moment, his eyes paused one of the chips.
Something was funny about it..... Then he shook his head. It was just his
imagination he told himself and completed the check.
"Samuel? May I ask a question?"
"Sure."
"Everytime you enter this room, you do a manual check of that machine. Why?"
"It makes me nervous." Samuel admitted. "I don't think they're a treasure, I
think they're a menace and if they ever get free, I hope I'm dead and gone
when they do cause I'd hate to be the one who has to put them back."
"An admirable sentiment." Goodink said with his usual dry sarcasm. Samuel
inclined his head, hearing what the doctor said and how he said it. Sally had
told him the same thing many times though she had laid it to him bold and to
the point. Ivo was of a more diplomatic bent. "Well. Shall we begin?" He
handed over a sheaf of printouts. "Take a look at these." Samuel took them,
and began going through them. After an hour or so of study, he happened to
look up through the open window at the cityscape.
He saw the first lightning bolt strike the tower.
He never really saw the second.
************
The man who had once been Ivo Goodink sat up. He felt different, more
powerful. Stronger. He looked over at Samuel. His fur had gone from brown to
blue except for his stomach and face. Curious. Slowly he stood. There was
certain bisnuess that needed attending to.
************
When Samuel came to, the lab was in ruins and the machine burnt and broken.
Control rings lay scattered all over the place and Goodink was nowhere to be
seen.
"Uhhhh." He groaned, sitting up and putting one blue hand to his head. Blue?
He stared at his hand in shock. Blue! His arms, legs, Blue! He was Blue!
Sacre Bleu, he was blue! A smile spread over his face and he laughed. Blue,
Sacre Bleu. Blue, Sacre Bleu. He laughed louder, falling backwards and
holding his sides.
************
Sally Acorn paused to refold the cloth and press it to her head once more
before setting back out towards the human Goodink's lab. She had to find
Samuel!
************
Sally found Samuel in the ruins of Goodink's lab. Tears rolling down his face
as he shrieked with laughter.
"Sam!" She shouted, shaking him. "Sam! Snap out of it!"
"No....Can't!" He gasped out. "Sacre-Bleu-I'm-Blue-Too-Funny!" He launched
off into another peal of laughter.
Gritting her teeth, Sally slapped him, putting her shoulder behind the blow
for added power. He stopped laughing almost immediately
"Thanks Sal, I needed that." Samuel rubbed his cheek.
"No charge." She said with a smile. "What happened here?" Samuel looked
around.
"I was going over some graphs with the Doc..." He paused, trying to sort it
all out. "And I looked up and saw the lightning flash...." He shrugged. "Next
thing I knew, I'm waking up and I'm blue." He looked himself over. "Not to
bad. Actually, I could get used to it."
"So could I." Sally said softly, almost wistfully. "How do you feel?" She
said in a more normal tone.
"Great. I feel supercharged--" He broke off as a thought struck him. "THE
EMERALDS!" He dashed to the smoking remains of the machine. "They're gone!"
He looked around, for the first time seeing, really seeing that the control
rings were scattered around the room...and probably across the countryside.
"Blast." He muttered as he and Sally began to gather the control rings. "It
had ta be me."

Meanwhile.....
Pamela Goodink pondered the chess board before her. She had been teaching
Abrahamus various Earth Games and he had taken to chess like a duck to water.
After many minutes, the king moved his bishop and took her last rook.
"Check." He said, sitting back with a smile. Pamela opened her mouth to reply
when something shook the castle. Bright light and smoke obscured her vision.
"Your Majesty?" She asked, coughing. "Your Majesty? Are you okay?"
"I am well Pamela." She felt a pair of hands touch hers. "You?"
"Also well." She stood, tucking the king under her arm. "Breathe shallowly."
Slowly, with one hand out in front, she made her way to the door.
Out in the hallway, the air was clearer and she set the king down.
"What happened?"
"Lightning struck the Machine Holding the Chaos Emeralds." Said Ivo's voice
behind her.
"Oh my God Ivo. That's horrible." A hand with the grip of steel tightened
around her neck.
"I'm afraid my dear, that its much worse then that." Said the voice
conversationally. Then the only sound in the hallway was a snap as the former
Doctor Goodink casually broke his wife's neck, killing her instantly. He
chuckled as he dropped her body. Acorn was nowhere to be found. No matter. He
would find His Majesty eventually. But for now, there was another matter to
attend to. A rather unimportant matter, but one that needed attending to.
************
Samuel bent to pick up a ring and something under the remains of the machine
caught his eye. Curious, he retrieved it.
"What is it Samuel? Sam?" She came over, noticing his face had gone very pale.
"Its a secondary backup control regulator chip." He said, his voice a half
whisper. "In the event of a severe power surge, like a lightning strike,
these chips are supposed to trap the Emeralds in a cage of control rings." He
stiffly sat. "I was checking those chips before the lightning struck..." He
lunged at the machine, ripping off an acess panel and tore out the chip that
had seemed funny to him. "I knew there was something wrong! I knew it!" He
stared at the chips in his hand. "This is all my fault. If I hadn't ignored
my instincts, then--" Sally cut him off by planting her hand over his mouth.
"Shut up Sam." She snapped. "There's no time for this." She slung the
backpack containing all the control rings they could find onto her back and
gave the bandages on her head one last tug to make sure they were tight. "We
have to find those Emeralds."
************
Snivelas watched as Ivo put on his new clothes. They did seem to suit his new
personality.
"You look fine sir."
"I didn't ask." Ivo replied, making a few final adjustments.
"Of course Doctor Goodink."
"No....Not Goodink..." A lipless mouth twisted into a smile. "Robotnik."
Outside, the wind howled accompanied by the double flash of lightning as the
thunder rumbled like demonic hordes cheering a new master.
