I partially agree myself. In a sense Ranma isn't a practicioner of the
Anything Goes, he is Anything Goes. The Martial arts are the center of his
life, he's a Martial artist before anything else. Now he's much too carpie
deum to be devistated easialy or quickly, however he has no home, almost no
possesions, no close friends. Martial arts is one of the only constants in
Ranma's life. And it's also the only thing he can really feel pride in. So
any threat to that pride becomes an adversary to overcome by any means.
I'm not saying that Ranma can't deal with Akane as a near equal, what I
am saying is that untill Ranma knows that he can consistantly beat her, he's
going to be too busy probing for any sort of exploitable weakness to
actually feel anything warm about her.
Although Ranma's training does give him an edge. The sheer intensity
means that Akane's training can be summarised as a series of events where
Soun told her, "Do this, This way!" and she did it that way. Ranma's
training on the other hand would be more along the lines of Genma telling
him "Do this, This way!" and Ranma going "Nope I'm doing it That way!"
That is Ranma's established method of defeating any serious challenger.
As to the backstory, the simplest beginning I can think of would be
during Genma and Soun's training with Happosei. Now the shaired hardship of
Happosei's training was a bond between them, but if they were just a little
more competative within that bond, Soun could have come away from the
training with an unsatisfied need to beat Genma. Expanding- During training
they were very close in ability most of the time, the biggest differences
between them was attitude. Soun trained harder, and applied a level of
focus that Genma could never match. Wheras Genma had a lazy streak, and a
tendancy to look for the easy way to do anything, but that very tendancy
became the foundation of an incredible degree of creativity and inovativness
that more than offset his less polished skills.
And for a big event, after sealing Happosei, the pair decided to spar
one last time to see who was Happy's best student. They fought, Soun had
the edge for a time, then Genma remembered that the loser bought dinner, and
cut loose with the Yama and Umi Sen-Ken. And the memory of this defeat is
the event pushing Soun to keep training Akane as hard and as thorougly as he
could.
I agree. Basically, it goes against Ranma's psychological makeup. Ranma
is monumentally inscure due to the ten or so years of physical and
psychological abuse by his father. Ranma has to be the best at
everything and anything, because, he believes, if he is not, than not
only is he totally worthless as a person as his father has told him over
and over, but also it would totally invalidate the purpose of the
training trip that has fucked his life up. If he is no longer the best,
than why did he have to give up everything to be the best? If it was, in
fact, possible to achieve mastery of Anything-Goes without leaving
Japan, then there was no point to the training trip that took him from
his mother, all friends, and home and ended him up with a phobia of
cats, uncontrollably growing hair, the tendency to turn into a girl when
hit with cold water, and at least half a dozen fiancees. If anything,
losing to Akane would shatter Ranma entirely, leaving either totally
bitter towards everyone or self-hating to the point of suicide. It's an
interesting idea for a fic, and well written, but the bottom line is
that Ranma's reaction is totally out of character.

Hmm. Rather unconvincing plotline, I must admit.
Akane, better than Ranma, training at home? Very, very
hard to swallow. Even if she went on a same training
trip as he did, I doubt she would be as good as him;
she doesn't seem as talented.
The point here seems that if Akane was as good as
Ranma, they would get along very well. I must
disagree; if Ranma was beaten by a girl who lived a
relatively normal life (at least, compared to his
upbringing), then he probably would get frantic to
surpass her (skipping school, training day and night,
or even attempting to master Neko-ken); I can't see
him being friendly to her. If anything, fear or
hostility is much more likely.
Sorry for negative comments, but I really found
it unbelievable.
