Uh, bats are everywhere man. There are bats in cities. I've always
got a
few that live in my shed during the summer months. They are highly
adaptive creatures who can live almost anywhere, and the lights of
a city
attract large consentrations of insects, which they eat. Most
people see
them and think they are birds or large bugs. City bats usually
aren't
very big, fitting easily into the palm of your hand.

Whatever...this wasn't as much of a point as the others, I just
found it odd
that a bat would turn up smack in the middle of Nerima...I'm no
zoological
expert, but I've always been lead to believe that bats were uncommon
on
volcanic islands.

Not true, Japan as a few varaiety of small brown bats. They are sparse
but they do exist. The Hawaiian Islands are home to a large variety of
bats, some of them quite large.

Ahem, she was lying to him, and stealing the money. She was using
current events to make up an excuse. Cops usually leave
prostitutes
alone for the most part. They make good informants. However there
is a
quota they have to meet, this is usually when they arrest
prostitutes.

Yes, yes, I got the point that she was making excuses. It still
doesn't
change the fact that it *jars against* a scene earlier in the story.

Actually, it points out that she's lying, without this scene there would
be no reason to blieve her story to be a lie. A subtle clue I left for
readers to figure it out on their own.

She's been living around them for the better part of four years
now, and
since Shampoo left and Ranma married Akane she decided to stay in
Japan.
This indicates that their relationship probably got a lot better
over
time. I'll admit the other Tendos getting as upset as they seemed
might
have been a strech, but Ranma and Akane isn't.

Yes it is. Cologne never gave them anything but misery. Akane would
be glad
she was gone, because it would mean that they'd never have to worry
about
her trying to force Ranma into marrying Shampoo again...even if
Shampoo has
been missing for a while.

What I was trying to get across to you is that you GIVE NO EXAMPLES
of WHY
they're grieving for her the way they are. You don't provide
anything
contradictory to canon, and so one assumes that nothing has
*happened* to
contradict canon, and therefore one wonders why Akane is weeping
over
Cologne.

You're not giving the girl enough credit. Akane is a very emotional
person, and quite kind most of the time. In the episode where everyone
thought Happosai would die she was sad and didn't want to see him die.
She cried when Shinosuke, a boy she hardly new was going to die. Plus,
she has been shown getting along with Cologne from time to time during
rare breaks in the action. I've never seen any indication of any malice
towards any of the China gang but Shampoo from her.
Plus you don't seem to realize how deeply a death can effect you, even
the death of someone you don't really like. A rival of mine died a few
years ago. We competed against each other all the time in school over
things that seemed important at the time mostly just to spite each other,
even got into a few fights. He died in an accident during his senior
year, and I was amazed at how upset I got about it. I really hated the
guy, but I was definitely much less happy without him around.

Nabiki isn't all that tough of a sale really in this scene, she and
Kasumi are both shown in the manga getting along rather nicely with
Cologne. It seems at times that Nabiki actually has a begrudging respect
for her. [Go back and look at her reaction to some of the things Cologne
does. The Chestnut fist story is a good example of this.]

The only real trouble I might see in this is from Soun, but he would cry
just because it was a funeral. He cries when Kasumi's cooking is
particularly good. No doubt the event would bring back memories of his
own wifes funeral as well. A sure fire tear fest for Soun Tendo.

Ranma is older and more mature, she has long since given up chasing him
down and he sees her as a teacher. Cologne has gone out of her way to
help him out on several occasions, even if it was in her own best intrest
to do so. Especially in later stories in the manga. [The Hiryushoutenha
is a standout example of this.] I don't see any reason why she and Ranma
would not get along after Shampoo vanished.

As for motive and reasons? To put it simply, I wanted her out of the
way. Cologne would be an easy way to fix too many problems Ranma has to
deal with in this story, and I didn't want an easy escape for him. So I
just killed her off before it started. I don't feel I really need to
explain because other than having her out of the way it has no real
importance to the story itself. Akane isn't in the tale long enough to
give reasons for her sadness over Cologne' passing. Its true I could have
explored it a bit more, but I didn't see any real need to do so.

You want a reason? Well, Cologne helped her out a lot when she got
pregnant. After losing her own family, the Tendos were probably the
closest thing she had, and Ranma is a regular customer at the Cat Cafe
along with the Tendo family. They sort of grew on each other I suppose.

He who denied it, supplied it.

Just say no to prophylactics.
