The picture I'm getting from this is Akane as a bully. Her insecurity over
her own femininity leads her to believe that everyone thinks that she is fat
and ugly, so she strikes out in response to this. This does not endear her
to the students, who respond by calling her fat and ugly, which justifies
her actions to herself. A vicious cycle. I can see many different ways in
which this could have occurred. Akane could have had an awkward childhood,
where she actually was fat for a while. The fact that she isn't anymore
doesn't matter. She still thinks of herself that way. Some boy may have
teased her about her martial-arts interest, saying that a 'fat girl like
yourself couldn't keep up' or some such.
I think what offends most people is they can't get around the fact that the
change from the canon doesn't actually occur within the fic, and we don't
actually know what the change is. We only see the effects, so we can't
predict what's going to happen. Very refreshing, actually.
