..... You have completely, utterly lost me
here.
How is it possible for Soun to push Akane harder
than
Genma did Ranma, without all the abuse, poverty,
homeless life, lack of education, and other
elements?
Don't say that job time must have detracted them;
IF
(and that's a BIG if) Genma and/or Ranma worked,
they
would probably be rigorous jobs,
such as construction works or farming. That's
WAAAAY
better training method than sitting around in
school
half of the day.
Well, as some people noted, Ranma isn't totally
uneducated, so he had to
spend a great deal of time in school. Probably not
as much as Akane, but
enough so that he wasn't held back. And Genma
obviously does consider Ranma
having an education to be somewhat important. I
don't see how poverty and
homelessness immediately equate to better martial
artist. It makes life
tougher, but not to an incredible degree.
You have a valid point there; we can never really
know if Ranma's childhood was totally devoted on
training and nothing else, or actually had time for
other things.
There's a problem here, though, that Japanese
schools are MUCH more reluctant to fail even the worst
of students. Genma probably let him study just enough
to make him not a retard, and not much more. Besides,
when one is a great athlete like Ranma (he's in
olympic level, even by Ranmaverse standards), he or
she never has to worry about failing; so many colleges
and high schools are willing to overlook bad grades
for the sake of physical abilities. That's why I
believe Ranma attended less than half of school time
that Akane did.
As for life on road and its effects on a person's
physical abilities, I can sum it up in a word: Ryoga.
And you don't know what this Akane has had to go
through to become the level
of martial artist that she is. I haven't addressed
it yet, because it's too
soon.
Well, next time, at least an author's notes at
the end? Please have mercy for us stupid people who
can't recognize subtle hints. ^_^;
??? You have the weirdest belief I have ever
encountered. Ranma is like a mild, non-genocidal
version of Vegeta (DB). He HATES being beaten by
anybody; a natural reaction, when you consider
that
it's the only thing he's good at.
Yes, he does. That's going to be a problem, isn't
it? Especially, since this
Akane has pretty much the same attitude.
So how come they are getting along like friends
already? Wouldn't they bicker even worse than original
R&A did?
In other words, you wanted to make them
equals?
Since Akane is superior to him in academics and
other
civilized common sense, it seems more like
unbalancing
their relationship.
All I mentioned about this Akane's education is that
A) She didn't want to
be late, because it would affect her grades which
are moderately in trouble
because of training trips, B) She focuses 110% on
school, which was more of
showing a character trait than how well she was
doing.
Sounds like she's a model student to me. I knew a
lot of students who were not very attentive to class,
constantly late, rude to teachers, sleeping in school,
etc., that still managed to make better than average
grade.
And are you saying that Ranma isn't a bad student
in your fic? Not out of possibility (I believe he's
about average), but most probably not as good as Akane
in academics.
R&A were pretty balanced in original. Ranma was
undoubtedly the better fighter and also better at
household labor, but he was socially immature. Akane
was obviously better at civilized things, and could be
much more polite. They were helping each other this
way. In your fic, it seems like Ranma would be plagued
by feelings of inferiority, since even in martial arts
he can at best only equal her. How would such a
relationship work? The only way I could see it
happening romantically (You ARE trying to pair them
up, right?) is if Ranma developed an idol worship on
Akane, for being able to fight as well as he can while
being good at everything else.
Self-control? Akane? Well, it's not the
first, I
guess. But then, that raises this question; if
Akane
is
so miraculously good just by means of ordinary
training, then wouldn't she be even more egostical
than Ranma? It's not a must, but it's something of
a
possibility. In fact, when she lost to Ranma in
their
third match, shouldn't she react exactly the same
as
he did?
Nowhere did I ever mention that Akane received
'regular' training only. Soun
does have a sign that asks challengers (dojo
destroyers and such) to please
use the back door. That indicates that at some
point, he expected to be
challenged fairly often.I mentioned in multiple
places that Akane has gone
on extensive training trips.
Multiple and extensive, but not decade-long. I
just can't see Akane getting better training than
Ranma did while staying at home at least half of the
time. Not unless her childhood was filled with action
like canon Ranma's teenhood was.
Note, however, that Akane was fairly quick to
admit Ranma as being vastly superior... Not in
words,
but in attitudes.
??? Where?
This is probably debatable, but Akane confides in
Ranma's ability very much (see her comments during
Ranma vs. Mousse the first time, Ranma vs. Ryoga in BT
story, when she is kidnapped by Taro and Kirin, and
just read Akane's words of confidence when Ranma is
packing to face Herb: "I know that you will win.").
She even says aloud this in volume 11, hypnosis
mushroom episode (alright, it might be a little later
than you thought I meant): "If Ranma went real on me,
I wouldn't stand a chance!"
Rivalry respect? THIS early in meeting? When
she
(from her point of view) had been peeked on?
I think this Akane has the common sense to realize
that >Ranma didn't
want to
be in the bathroom with her. She might have been very
angry, but it was
*her* fault. Not Ranma's.
At this point, I'm wondering if you're writing
this in reprise to all those fic that make Ranma
near-perfect while leaving Akane as it is. Now, I
don't have a problem with that; it's about time
someone did it. But I would like to have it done more
convincingly, and in less subtle manner.
But still, you haven't answered my question:
why
didn't Ranma react with fear or hostility toward
Akane, when beaten as a boy? If it was against
somebody like Ryoga or Herb, he could sort of
accept
it; they trained almost as hard as he did, maybe
even
more. But a Japanese schoolgirl, living comfortably
in
home with family and friends, never having to worry
about where the next meal was coming, and even
having
the luxury of regularly attending school (May I
point
out that he never really protested to going to
school
in canon?)... That would probably be unforgivable
in
his eyes.
You are making a whole scad of assumptions here. Yes,
Akane managed to
go to
school more regularly than Ranma, but nowhere did it
just say, "Akane
just
studied at home under Soun and became better than
Ranma." That's
laughable.
So make it easier to see so, PLEASE! Make a
prologue or something. I proceeded on the fic without
realizing how much implication you were making.
Ranma realizes that Akane had to have had some very
serious challenges
to be
at the level that she is at. It just hasn't been
specifically pointed
out
which circumstances she had to go through. (But then
again, we didn't
learn
about the Cat Fist until after the Goldern Pair.)
Well, I hope we get to know how soon. Your
writing style is great; I don't want to end up hating
your story just because of a few, minor issues that I
have trouble with.
Ranma is considerably generous and
mild-tempered... but not if you activate his
inferiority complex.
Well, I hope my ranting didn't tick you off...
No, but it was built on some misconceptions. As long
as >we keep it
civil,
we're all right.
=)
Well, I'm glad about that. But if you're taking
Akane's modifications as far as you can go, then I
want to see it done more obviously. Like I said
earlier, a prologue or author's notes for us stupid
people. ^_^;
You convinced me that it is not impossible for
Akane to be this strong; you gave me enough hints now.
But I still can't see why they are getting along.
