Well, Kirin was only after the person who held the
other half of the scroll.
Toma kidnapped ALL the women from the ship and he
only noticed Akane when
she hit him(I sense a recurring theme in this
series. Perhaps R. Takahashi
is
a bit of a sadist at heart?).

Hi,
Girls or women hitting boys or men
is a motif in anime/manga.
In the case of girls hitting boys
this "motif" may be found in
1) Mama is a Fourth Grader,
2) Airbats, (perhaps not the quantity of _hits_ as
other shows but the _quality_ is impressive ^_^)
3) Fushigi Yuugi
4) Blue Seed
Rather than evidence of sadism, IMO,
it shows (sometimes in a comedic fashion)
strong and assertive women. Women acting in
a manner outside their traditional roles.
IMO a girl hitting a boy indicates a
non-traditional assertive female in the same
way that "nose-bleeds" indicate sexual
excitement or "sweat drops" demonstrate
emotion.
It should also be recalled that Ranma is a
_Martial Arts_ comedy. There is a _lot_ of
hitting. ^)*
Regarding this Ranma example,
Akane slaps Toma while he is laughing
at the "girls", scrambling to win his contests:
"Using women just to relieve your
boredom! You're the lowest!"
Not sadistic, justifiably angry.
This has _all_ been _In My Opinion_ ONLY. *)*
