Can somebody please explain to me what the parenthesis that are around "do"
and "is" are for? I always thought, when I see them in quotes, that these
are words that aren't said, but are assumed to have been said by the
speaker. (or something like that) With the above quote, I'm just confused
as all hell as to why those parenthesis are there in the first place.

PS -- I read fanfics for fun and amusement. Advancing plot, storyline, or
character developement aren't too important for me. Reading should be fun,
and a lot of fanfics are cute, good, funny, or thought provoking. That's
about the only qualification as to whether or not I like something or not.
This doesn't mean I don't like the heavy drama or dark fanfics, I just don't
read a lot of them.
