If you want "big brother", and can tolerate a little more age
difference...remember that Genma went on his trip when Ranma was 10. If
he slept with Ash's mother during the first year of that trip, that
would put Ranma only a few years past the end of his series when Ash
goes on his first journey.
Speaking of which, why stop Ash from going on his journey? A lot of the
character development people relate to (like Ash's first encounter with
Misty, and the feelings generated by their mutual stubbornness) happened
during it.

Futhermore, many years pass between Ash's Orange Island trip and his
voyage into G/S land (the "Jolt" league, from what I'm told). This
could well go in there.
