It had taken a lot of work for Nabiki to avoid the
temptation to use her full potential in school.

       But to do so would mean to leave. Leave the school, go to
university, and lose nearly all of her contacts.

That's not how it works in Japan, incidentally.  High school is the 
tough part.  Nobody _ever_ just skips past high school on the strength 
of their brilliance although it does let you get into better high 
schools.
