[Sample 1]

"Ohayou, Ikari-kun."

"A-Ayanami!"

"Darling!"

"Asuka-chan!"

Sometimes, it seems everything is conspiring against me. Here I am with the
two girls I care about the most...and I can't decide who to go out with. So
what do I do? Run away--again.

I wish Mom was still alive. I could use some advice. Suzuhara and Aida would
probably say I'm an idiot for not taking advantage of the situation. Maybe I
am, but I'd rather be an idiot than a two-timing lecher.

Dad's still in Germany. I don't know why he just goes off to far away places
like that. He never talked much about Mom after she died. Maybe he's trying
to forget the pain of losing her.

Kaji-san at the NERV Cafe seems to understand. He always does. One time I
asked him if he had a girlfriend. He didn't answer and just gave me this
sincerely crooked smile that told me not to ask again.

This Marduk Institute Dad enrolled me in is kind of weird. We have uniforms,
regular classes and everything, but there're all these psychological tests.
And not just inkblots and stuff.

Another thing is that ALL the students don't have mothers. At least, the ones
in my section don't.

There was a new teacher who just started last week. Her name was Maya Ibuki.
She had a boyish cut of hair and was just full of energy. She was all tired
out before the end of her first day. She and Akagi-sensei seemed to get along
rather well. Maybe a little too well, but I could get in trouble for saying
that out loud.

Finding a vacant apartment that you could _afford_ was practically impossible
in this city, so Dad arranged for me to live with the Horakis. Nice family.
The youngest daughter, Hikari, was my class representative. She was also
Asuka's best friend, which meant she could drop by most anytime.

Not a good thing.

I mean, she was cute and everything and I haven't even kissed her or anything
-- but she thought we were already a couple. (I saw her flirting with
Kaji-san once or twice, but it was kind of obvious she was just trying to make
me jealous.) That's how it seemed to everyone at school.

Ayanami didn't seem to mind. The only thing she cared about was acing the
tests, doing a good job. I didn't know much about her family. Her real
family, that is. Ever since she enrolled in junior high, she's been living
with the Langleys. She and Asuka were practically sisters. I don't know why
they haven't adopted her; it didn't seem like Ayanami had any blood relations
-- any that cared, that is.

About ten years ago, I heard my parents fighting. I didn't know what it was
about and I suppose I never will--Mom died a few weeks later; _how_ she died
was something Dad wouldn't talk about. There was this nasty rumor that I
heard a few years later that he had something to do with it. Even though we
weren't exactly the closest father and son in the world, I couldn't believe he
would do anything like that to anyone, much less Mom.

Now I'm not so sure.

poets, copywriters, politicians--and lovers. Without the art of lying,
where would these professions be?" --Jullie Yap Daza
