Esa Karjalainen's C&C makes me want to read this story. There's just one
problem--the smart quotes. Smart quotes are a feature of MS Word that turns
ASCII standard quote marks into curly quotes that point up or down based on
their position. They look rather nice in Windows. However, some of us have
gotten fed up with Microsoft and switched to Linux. Here's a short snippet to
show what other OSs do to smart quotes:
?Hey, Ranchan! Hey, Akane!?
?Hi, Ucchan!? Ranma called back to his friend.
?Hey, you guys wanna study with me for finals? I know we still have over
two weeks, but I want to do well...? Ukyou asked.
?I?m up for it. How ?bout you, Akane??
Akane looked a little perturbed. Then she softened and replied, ?I guess
so...?. After all, Ukyou had asked her, as well as Ranma. That meant she
wasn?t just trying to get Ranma alone. Although, why should she care if
Ukyou wanted that baka {right...}, anyway?
?Great! How about tonight at 6:00? I can make us dinner!? Ukyou beamed.
it gets worse. here it is on some other viewers on my system:
note: the original test is:
"These are quotes". `these are single quotes' hmm...
vim: ~GThese are quotes~H. ~EThese are single quotes~F hmm~A
vi: \207These are quotes\210. \205These are single quotes\206 hmm\201
[O's and A's are accented.]
pine: ^OThese are quotes^O. ^OThese are single quotes^O Hmm^A
<are inversed, but the brackets are still there.>
mailx: <87>These are quotes<88>. <85>These are single quotes<86> hmm<81>
