[This story, this one's one of those "Once upon a time"
deals . . .]
***
"Do you really consent to become my test subject?"
Once upon a time, long long ago, there was a great man.
Like many other great men, he had a vision. It was a
wonderful vision of the future, a future in which
mankind would no longer be plagued with the
weaknesses that marked him as being merely human.
"Yes, Dr. Oak."
"I . . . I've been considering getting married recently,
but . . . I guess it's just one of my quirks. My mother
kinda beat her mentality into me, I guess . . . I want to
have the child. It means everything to me."
"I'm . . . I'm not forcing you to do this, Miss Ketchum."
Humanity was slowly dying, he knew. The size of the
gene pool decreased slightly every year, and he was
already beginning to see the side-effects . . . people
completely unrelated to one another, yet bearing the
same set of genes.
"Does it bother you that you're still single, then? I know
it's hard for a single parent . . . I could, you know . . ."
And often times, the doubles *were* related. He
suspected mass-inbreeding, but he couldn't prove it.
"Not necessary, Dr. Oak. I have more than enough
income as it is."
***
[Like, I say, "Once upon a time," but I really mean, "In a
different age in the history of Humanity." Famous quotes
goes, "The Wheel of Time turns, and the Ages come and
Go." Something like that. It's a fancy way of saying,
"History tends to repeat itself. The Earth is a *lot* older
than you think, and if you just keep going back in time,
you'll eventually see yourself."]
***
The cause of the gene pool size reduction was still
unknown, but frankly he didn't care. He was more
worried about finding a way to stop it.
"I see . . ."
And so he worked. He worked to find this mysterious
"all-cure" that had eluded his predecessors and
colleagues. He was different from them. He found it.
And he tried it out.
"This child . . . he might be somewhat different from the
others around him. Are you sure you wish this?'
It was simple, really. Evolution. He needed a way to
speed it up. His conclusion: they key lies in fusing
mankind with a gene that allows instantaneous
evolution.
"I'll be there for him."
And he knew just the place to get the genes.
"Okay."
Pokemon.
The experiment began . . .
***
[Hmm . . . something not quite right there. I don't think I
understood What-his-face, um . . . oh yes, I believe his
name was Robert or Gary or Mike or something . . . I
mean, I don't think I said it right. If you really wanna
know what that Robert guy said, go ask him yourself.]
***
"It was never meant to be like this."
"What . . . what do we do now?"
Seventeen years later, the child that had been the fruits of
his labor underwent the first of his evolutions. Needless
to say, the boy had not been very pleased.
"I don't know. I can't believe I was so stupid . . ."
"It ain't your fault. We just have to figure out a way to
deal with it."
"I know . . . but I just can't emotionally accept this. How
could I have been so wrong? How? Why did I do this?"
Explanations were due, and the scientist gave them
freely. He told a tale of a man, struggling to save
humanity from its own folly. He told of the pangs of
guilt, of the pains the man underwent to achieve his
goals. He told of the happiness the man felt at the
success. And the boy . . .
The boy was touched.
***
[You've heard the story before . . .]
[Like, you know, some brilliant scientist has a vision for
the future of humanity? Yeah, sure, there's plenty of
them . . .]
***
"Shall I change the past?"
"No. You can't. Even if you prevented me from making
these mistakes, this would eventually happen toanother
person. Somehow, I just *know* we can't prevent this."
And when the scientist asked the boy to join him in his
cause, the boy agreed.
"Then what can we do?"
"I'm really sorry that I did all of this to you, Ash . . ."
"Dr. Oak. I thought we agreed to this, right? It's not your
fault anymore. Don't say that."
***
[Take like this Frankenstein fellow, for example. Really
bright, him. Put two and two together and figured out
how to reanimate bodies . . .]
[His end was, to say the least, rather sad . . .]
***
Nine samples were created. One for each of the planets
besides Earth, and one for the Moon, just for the
symbolism. These nine were to be imparted with the
greatest of the pokemon powers, and made to govern
over the new humans. The last was created in the image
of the boy, with the same abilities as he did. This was the
scientist's way of repaying the boy for his pains and his
efforts.
This having been completed, the scientist and the boy
began working on less powerful samples, the new
humans themselves. There was quite an uproar from the
general populace when the scientist announced his
results. A new race of humans . . .
***
[See, that's what happens when your creations turn
against you. There's a whole bunch of scientists out there
just working away, and not one of them realizes that in
the end, they'll all just be martyrs in the name of science.
Sacrificed for the sake of progress . . . They're just
working themselves deeper into their own graves.
Knowledge comes with a price.]
***
"Ash. I'm going ask you just to do one more thing for me
before I . . . leave you to this world. Forgive me for
doing this."
"Doc . . ."
"Just find the answer to my question."
"A question?"
"I . . . I don't want anything anymore. All I want to know
is that it alls ends peacefully."
"You want me to go into the future?"
"Yes . . . and Ash?"
"Yeah?"
"Take your friends with you. They'll be there for you
when you need them."
"Okay . . . I'll do it, Dr. Oak."
"Thank you."
***
[See that guy over there? He's developing advanced
humanoid worker robots, I believe. What was his name
again? Manta? Ray? Oh yes, Stingray. Nice fellow, but
kinda absentminded.]
[He'll probably die in one of them big corporate clash
things when he gets around to selling his designs . . .]
[You know what I'm talking about, right?]
***
And then everything went wrong. Extremist parties set
against the idea began engaging in terrorist activities.
One such party infiltrated the breeding facility and
released some of the Neo-Humans by accident. These
samples, not quite fully mature yet, mutated into
horrendous monsters.
The results were not pretty. The mutants began
multiplying, and when provoked, began demonstrating
inhumanly violent tendencies. Whole cities were
enveloped in bloodbaths and fire. As a last-ditch effort to
prevent further tragedy, the scientist and the boy released
the nine original samples to make war on the mutants . . .
"I'll, um, try to be back as quickly as possible, Dr. Oak.
Just . . . just don't do anything stupid, okay?"
"Yes," he said, watching the boy turn to leave.
And that's exactly what it was. War.
"Goodbye, Ash."
And on a night in late October, the scientist stood alone
atop the burnt remains of his home, looking across the
landscape, at the still-burning buildings . . .
