How is it that a matter of plot choice constitutes a mistake?
It's not, depending on what your objectives are. If you're not someone
who is known as a writer, and don't mind 90% of the people (a conservative
estimate, I believe) deleting the fic without reading it, go ahead and
write an SI. If you want to run the risks of boring your audience by
writing something that's been done to death, write a 'Ranma
instantaneously gets smart' fic, or a pointless-scene fic. Mind you, if
you do care about the consequences, then you might not want to do this.
No one's stopping you. No one's going to ban you. And if you do manage
to pull off a masterpiece, then more power to you. But if no one
comments, other than to say "It's been done before", don't cry to the FFML
for C&C.

The sardines weren't worth the trouble. A few more shots, then
Ryoga-san would overheat and explode. Ducking around a corner,
I managed to lose him as I entered the ramshackle residence of
my Anime supplier.
One look at his face and I knew that I had been betrayed. "Tell me,"
I insisted. He refused, so I slammed him against the wall.
"Last chance. Where can Ranma-Ranma find good fanfics?"
"Try Jason Liao," he whispered, before he slumped to the floor.
I heard the sounds of a door splintering as I left through the
window, one step ahead of Tendo Heavy Industries...
