Unfortunately, this Lina *hasn't* had her fun in Next.
Specifically, (and to address the one issue not yet addressed in the C&C),
Mazoku do live in the what you might call the universe or world of Slayers
(it doesn't help that the same Japanese word can be used for both), but
much or most of their existence is on the Astral Plane.
Therefore they're VERY hard for Lina to kill until she learns some ...
stuff in Next---she can't do a Ra Tilt, plus there's the minor detail of
a human channeling enough power to kill a Mazoku (read the translated
novel at inverse.org where the big showdown with Ruby-Eye occurs).
I suspect one of the reasons she wants Gourry's Sword of Light is that
it can take out a Mazoku, as well as being a magic/will amplifier that
she can use very well (better than Gourry).
If this was after Next, she'd not sweat an attack of Mazoku strengthened
monsters, she'd just kill Melvin out of hand. (Ever wonder why Xellos
is *so* polite to her? (Well, there are a couple of reasons beyond
that (orders and L-sama), but I think this is a factor.) Of course
I'm sure it also helps that she's a Black Magic user.)
Anyway, getting back to the story in question, if the author is willing
to place it before much of Next most of the continuity problems go
away. And Melvin sounds like a sufficiently overconfident and dim bulb
that he'd leave too much of himself in the normal plane, and therefore
get fairly well toasted by her Dragon Slave. (I'm making as assumption
that normal Mazoku have some ability to shift between the two planes;
we know <spoiler deleted> can, but my memory is fuzzy on others being
able to.)
The only problem here is that I don't remember there being much rest
for her after Xellos shows up in Next, but he hasn't been seriously
written into the story yet, and could know about her without having
met her yet. Next strongly implies that what she did to the fragment
of Ruby-Eye raised some eyebrows in the Mazoku world (not to mention
that of the Gods and their minions).
