        Mon, 13 Dec 1999 17:07:43 -0500
  From:
        "X-ile" <tapham@vt.edu>

Description: Ranma decides to let Mommy fix all his problems
while he runs away. After all, that's the "manly" thing
to do, right?

Comments: Apparently this is an unadvertised Invasion of
the Body Snatchers crossover as Ranma suddenly can't cope
with the idea of fighting a lot, and Nodoka thinks that
if a promise causes you pain it is OK not to fulfill it.
Meanwhile Nabiki is intimidated by a threat of legal action even
though she hasn't been doing anything illegal. As "Nodoka
solves Ranma's problems" stories go, this one is peculiarly
strained and implausible.

Description: Cyberpunk story with some kind of vague
connection to Ruroni Kenshin.

Comments: The government attorney can't be very competent.
He had a perfect double play there. Bust the bounty hunter
for attempted murder of an innocent citizen. The only
way the hunter can get out is to admit that he had reason
to think that the citizen was not so innocent.

It is of course not particularly plausible that criminals
who have already received their judicial punishment would
still have bounties on their head. _If_ you did have that
kind of wacky situation, then obviously there would be no
point in turning oneself into the authorities to escape
the hunters, save possibly that one believe that one would
be found innocent if tried.

Description: Another Ranma prequel.

Comments: Prequels seem to be a developing trend in these
parts. This Ranma prequel does a good a job of depicting Genma and Soun
as they might have been. I don't think the joke of
depicting Soun and Genma as a near match for Kuno and Ranma
in their first encounter actually poses a problem. Soun
does have samurai pretensions, and Genma does show a
difference from the start, in that he actually asked a
girl out. I am a little puzzled, why, if Soun and Genma
are facing desperate danger, they didn't ask Ranma to do
it for them. Maybe the ninja didn't give them time.

Description: Space age Chinese Amazons in Giant Robots
are engaging in a bizarre experimentation program using
Star League Jyusenkyo Pools. Hilarity ensues.

Comments: The previous Battletech Ranmas that I have noticed
appear to have been done by teen-age boys for reasons
that are doubtless obvious. The maturity of perspective
in this version is a welcome change. It is also welcome
that in this one the Ranma characters have been left
with curses intact. It just isn't the same when people
start writing about a Ranma who isn't cursed, doesn't
know martial arts, has no engagements...

Why not the Kolkhoz Federation? Either that or the
Shiratori Empire. Federated Shiratori doesn't make a
lot of sense to me.

Description: I stand almost corrected as swarms of senshi
including a couple of original senshi in giant robots

everyone in sight.

Comments: Doesn't hang together particularly well. Where
the heck were they when everything was going on? They
just pop out of nowhere and solve everything with minimum
effort and maximum force. In any case the author needs to
pick a tense, present or past and stick with it.

Description: In the tradition of the Book of Job, Kami-sama

Comments: Gotta say, I think Mara will win this bet in
the end. But then as demons go she was pretty harmless.
But of course that means that Kami-sama really wins,
since the real stakes are not the supposed forfeit, but
the souls of Mara and Belldandy.

Description: Ranma gets antsy.

Comments: You should be careful about using expressions
like "Tofu froze in place" under the circumstances.
Tofu wouldn't need to give Ranma aspirin. His techniques
are more effective and don't irritate the digestive tract.

"You see, the trouble with us men, is that we can't almost never
hide what we feel in that sort of situation, even if we are thinking
something quite different. As you no doubt noticed, our plumbing is a
little different."

This paragraph is ungrammatical, and doesn't make cartloads
of sense.

One notes that the 20% figure depends on your definition
of "homosexuality"

"You think Ranma has good reason to worry about me," she said
with a gasp as she looked up at his face, "Don't you, Dr. Tofu."

Question mark.

"I never take even bets against Ranma in a straight up fight,
unless his opponent is someone of extraordinary ability, like Happosai,

Shouldn't that be "against Ranma's opponent"?

On the whole I think this story may be a bit too talky.
The author would be well advised to go through it looking
for lines to cut. As far as Tofu punching out Genma,
perhaps Genma should demonstrate more clearly that he
needs his attention gotten.

Although set after volume 38, it ignores the fact that

Description: Ranma becomes Sailor Pluto courtesy of

Comments: Ranma alternate realities are a dime a dozen.
That being the case it really is a good idea to only write
the things that are somehow different. For example in
this one, since different people are at the door, I suggest
you start with Nabiki and Soun going to answer to the
door, and leave everything before that out.

I don't think the telepathy is really necessary
for a Junior Pluto. Time powers are enough, and it's not
as if anyone brighter than average can't read Akane.
Poker-face she has not.

Also, Pluto's dialogue is over-done, going past mature into
pompous. Generally speaking, she's talking at excessive
length.
