from her previous incarnation. Had she and Asuka been closer than
friends? From what she had been told, Shinji and Asuka were much closer
than herself and the one before her, so if even Shinji failed, she stood

her pillow. "I...can't...be fixed. Ritsuko said..."
"we have all been wrong before. shinji is alive because of that."

"Nothing! ... You...haven't seen him with the newcomer."
"you mean..."

"...your replacement?"
"Yes. He's..." Asuka snorted. "He's in love, for all I can tell.
They're probably screwing each other right now."

Rei blinked. She did not, of course, but to admit that might make
matters worse. Perhaps this was Asuka's problem? "used to?"
"Yeah, wondergirl, 'used to'. Love doesn't survive death."
There was only one recent death that Rei was aware of...and it would
make perfect sense, if Misato thought she could help Asuka. "sometimes
it does."
