CHAPTER TWO

*   *   *   *   *

Cooled by several self-contained heat sinks,
the 'Ignas Database' as Citan called it was the
combined compiled knowledge of both Aveh and Kislev,
supplemented by the residual information Citan had
gathered from Solaris as well as Shevat's extensive
records. While sifting through this incredible
amount of information, Citan was nothing less of
shocked when Kahran Ramsus gave him a small disk
that was a copy of the information held by the
Gazel Ministry. Somehow, Ramsus had gotten this
rare and formerly secret data from Krelian.
Citan had been plowing through this new influx
of data when Sigurd had come running in.
     "Sigurd?"
"Hyuga," Sig managed between breaths. "You...
won't believe this."
True to Sigurd's word, Citan didn't. All the
OmniGears were reactivated. To make sure it wasn't
just some sort of power surge, Citan had hopped into
Fenrir to find Fei. Sure enough, Fenrir responded
and had taken to the skies.
Now, Citan thanked Emeralda for the soothing
tea as he sat on the couch. Elly sat next to him,
Emeralda was busy with dinner, and Fei paced in front
of the couch.
"I don't understand," Fei said at length. "I
thought Zohar ceased to be when Deus was destroyed."
"Zohar was shut down, yes," Citan replied with a
nod. "That does not mean it ceased to be."
"But how could someone just re-activate it?
Didn't the Wave Existence have to be trapped for Zohar
to work?" Elly asked.
"I do not know. However, I do have a theory."
Fei smiled. "That's the Doc I know. Even when
you're in a panic, you're thinking."
"I was *not* in a panic," Citan said icily, and
Fei and Elly chuckled. "But, yes, I was thinking about
this on the way over."
"So what do you think, Doc?"
"Put simply, Fei, it might have been possible to
link with the Wave Existence without trapping it."
"How do you mean?" asked Elly as Emeralda got
some plates, causing the china to clink and shift.
"Even while we were fighting inside Merkava,
scientists were studying the energy readings from Deus
and Zohar. Information was, I believe, gathered on
the extra-dimensional aspects of Zohar's energy, as well
as the nature of the Wave Existence and its home
dimension. Instruments were even working during the
dimensional shift."
"I get it," Elly said. "Someone with the right
technology and knowledge could re-create the dimensional
shift and pull the Wave Existence back into our
dimension."
"Could they get a part of the Wave Existence, not
the whole thing?" Fei asked.
Citan adjusted his glasses as Emeralda brought in
four plates bearing good-smelling and well prepared food.
"Maybe they got a really big magnet," she said as she
put a plate in front of Fei.
"What?" Citan said, looking at Emmy.
"Well, if someone got a big enough magnet, I'd get
pulled towards it," Emeralda said slowly. "And if the
magnet were powerful enough, I'd lose my shape... kind of
form a line right to the magnet."
"Otherwise, Xenogears would have immediately powered
up," Fei concurred, "considering the Wave Existence gave
it to me to free it."
"A good point," Citan agreed. "But I do not know
of anyone with that kind of expertise in extra-
dimensional theory... "
"Would your pet project help?" Elly asked between
bites.
Citan had to smile. "Yes... the 'Ignas Database' may
hold what we're looking for. I can probably access it from
Fenrir, now that its full power has been restored."
"Right," said Fei, standing. "Thanks for dinner,
Emmy, but now I need to go have a look at Zohar."
"By yourself?" asked Elly, staring at him.
"Yeah. Doc needs to try and find the guy responsible.
I'm going to head to Zohar and try to peice together what
happened there."
     "I reiterate... by yourself?"
Fei sighed and put his hands on his hips, looking at
his shoes. There was a silence that hung in the room before
Citan spoke again.
"Elly... I think you and Emeralda should come with
me back to Shevat. While I do not need to go there to
acces the 'Ignas Database', we could pick up Regers and
Crescens, then head to Zohar ourselves to lend Fei a
hand."
"If he needs it," Emeralda put in. "In Xenogears,
Papa-san can handle just about anything!"
Elly sighed. "I'm not going to win this one, am I?"
Fei smiled, rested his hands on Elly's shoulders, and
kissed her forehead.
     "I'll be careful, I promise."
"You better, mister, or I'll have your precious Gear
for cans of water for the people of Nisan."
"I am sure they would appreciate the drinks, Elly, but
for now, shall we be going?"
Elly nodded as Fei headed out the door.
"I'm coming as soon as I can," she whispered, a promise
and a prayer, as Xenogears came to life and took to the skies.

Bart was bored out of his mind.
As yet another peice of legislature passed his desk,
President Bartholomew Fatima sighed softly, looked over
it, and signed it. Then another. And another still. He
was actually ready to sign the next one, and stopped short
of putting his name in the blotter.
     "Sig?"
The man that had been passing Bart the laws blinked
his eye, then shook himself awake.
"Forgive me, young master," Sigurd murmured.
"I told ya to stop calling me that," Bart told him,
readjusting his own eyepatch. "We're brothers for crying
out loud."
"All the same, for all intents and purposes, I'm more
a servant in your employ. Although I am surprised you
didn't foist all this on me," Sigurd replied, waving his
hand at the President's Office. It sat facing the city
of Bledavik, the capital of Aveh. Bart stared at Sigurd
and launched the pen across the room, where it buried
itself in the dart board, right in the nose of the picture
of Aveh's previous ruler, the dictator Shakhan.
"What kind of brother do you think I am?" the younger
brother replied, standing. "Sure, I'm a pirate and a
terror both in the battlefield and the sack, but when I've
got a responsibility, I grab it by the horns and wrestle it
to the sand! When the people elected me, despite the fact
I disolved Father's government, the right thing for me to
do was serve 'em!"
"I guess you're right... but you don't seem cut out
for this kind of legislative work."
"Just give me time, Sig... I can do anything."
     Sigurd smiled.
"I've seen you do amazing things, brother... but I
seriously doubt you can do *anything*."
"Just you watch!" Bart roared with a laugh. "I bet
next time we mix it up, Fei will be begging me to stop!"
"What are you going to do, sabotage Xenogears?"
     "Well, not sabotage exactly... "
Bart stopped in mid-plan when there was a knock at the
door. An aging man opened the door.
"Young master," he began, "Doctor Uzuki wishes you to
join him in Shevat as soon as you possibly can."
Bart looked over his shoulder at the stack of papers
yet to be perused and signed... then grabbed his weapons,
a pair of leather whips, from where they hung by the door.
"The laws can wait, Doc needs us! To the Yggdrasil!"
As if the world depended on him, Bart practically ran
to his airship, the Yggdrasil. Sigurd absently wondered if
the world really did depend on it this time, and he was
still wondering about it when they arrived in Shevat.
"That was quick," Elly said as Bart and Sigurd walked
down towards where Doc had set up shop. It was not in Shevat
itself, but off to one side, connected by a small corridor.
It was underground and the area was still in winter, which
is one of the reasons Citan chose the location. Bart
shrugged.
"I smelled adventure. I may only have one eye, but
my nose still works fine."
They were ushered into the room. It was copious, but
filled wall to wall, ceiling to floor, with some of the
most advanced computer equipment Bart had ever seen. A
single control panel and monitor dotted one face of awesome
hardware, and sitting in front of it on a rickedy wooden
chair was Citan.
     "Heya, Doc! What's up?"
"Good, Bart... I am glad you are here. Elly, Emeralda,
and I were just about to leave, but I wanted to at least
tell you about what is going on."
"Does this have to do with when you were in a panic
yesterday?"
The look from Citan was potent enough to drop Gears.
"Come on, Citan, I want to go help Fei."
Citan and Elly both noticed that Emeralda had not
used "Papa-san" to refer to Fei. While the nanotech colony
had significantly matured since her "growth" at the
Lighthouse, she still had moments where she acted a bit like
a child. Elly found it charming... Emeralda could exude
an innocence that captivated everyone. However, looking
into her golden eyes, Elly knew Emeralda was dead serious,
and knew she was capable of killing every person in the
room.
"Sorry, Emeralda... well, I could only find one
person capable of reactivating Zohar... the person with
the proper knowledge in dimensional science. His name
is William Weaver. He has several degrees, ranging from
nanobiology to psychology to interdimensional physics."
     "Smart cookie," Bart murmured.
"However, he was kicked out of most institutions for
performing experiements that violated the basic ethical
codes of science."
"Are we dealing with another Krelian?"
This question came from a shaken Elly. The idea that
someone possessed Krelian's level of knowledge probably wasn't
what was bothering her... it was the idea of that intelligence
coupled with a singular purpose and a slight psychosis that
shook her.
"I do not know... I will know better once we have him
in custody."
"Speaking of which, we should be going," said Emeralda,
already headed out the door. Elly scrambled to follow, and
Citan slowly stood.
"Hyuga... you look distraught. Is something wrong?"
"Weaver... in Professor Nomoe's class, he was the only
one to beat me in the final examination. I know how
intelligent he is. And how unethical."
Bart had never seen Citan look this worried. And
the young president knew it was because the healer had
one person on his mind.
     Fei.

*   *   *   *   *

Xenogears descended like an angel into the location
of the Zohar Modifier, the extradimensional power source
that gave life to most Gears and fueled the Ether powers
of a select few among the world's populace. Fei saw that
he was not the first person to be here... a scattering of
technological equipment was strewn across the floor of the
cavern. As Xenogears touched down, Fei saw that Zohar was
indeed active. The monolithic stone was about as tall
as Xenogears, and the single huge eye etched in the top
seemed to peer at Fei intently. But Fei did not feel
the presence of the Wave Existence, as he had upon awakening
in Xenogears' cockpit for the first time. In front of
Zohar lay the Alpha Weltall, the Gear used by a malevolent
spirit that turned out to be one of Fei's past lives, a
man calling himself Grahf. Fei thought he saw part
of another Gear behind Zohar, but then he saw his quarry.
A man about his height was rushing around, checking
the instruments. He turned to look at Xenogears and grinned.
"You're finally here! Come on down."
Fei stared. Implanted in the side of the man's head
was some form of mechanical device. Little lights flickered
all over it. But Fei shrugged...the guy didn't look like
that much of a threat. Besides, Fei didn't necessarily have
to be in Xenogears to use it. So he dismounted.
"You're the one that reactivated Zohar."
"Yep! William Weaver, at your service."
     "Why did you do that?"
"I'm building the ultimate weapon," Weaver replied, as
if he was discussing building a toy car for a child. "Now
that you're here, I can get at two of the key components."
Fei felt the hairs on the back of his head stand on end,
his muscles already tensing. He chided himself for getting
out of Xenogears. He could almost hear another voice, a
familiar one, telling him to get out while he could. It
sounded a bit like his father... yet...
"Oh... by the way... I need your psyche."
This second nonchalant comment broke Fei out of his
reverie. He furrowed his brows.
"Oh, not all of it," said Weaver reassuringly, then
with a lightning-fast motion, grabbed Fei by the throat.
     "Just your Id."
Before he completely blacked out, Fei heard three
distinct sounds.
First was a sound like fabric being ripped apart.
Second was the sound of a familiar voice letting out
a yowl of anger and frustration. Frustration at being
awakened without permission or preamble...anger at the
destruction of a long-desired peace. It was the sound of
pure primal rage.
The last thing Fei heard was his own voice screaming.
