Let's try a mental experiment.
Premise:
AT-Fields exist as physical entities.
What is a cell without an AT-Field?
LCL, the non-living chemical soup, organic as it is. The
Third Impact shows us that much.
What, then, is LCL with an AT-Field? Reversing the
previous scenario, living cells.
Does a cell have a soul?
The removed AT-Field (which exists as its own physical
entity) is applied to the LCL, turning it into cells. The
result is the original person. Does this person have a
soul? Yes. Hence, so do the cells.
What is the soul then, but an AT-Field?
The ultimate consequence of this game is the ATF
Theory, which isn't what would be called authoritative.

[A.T. Field]
Abbreviation of "ABSOLUTE TERROR FIELD". A
physical barrier of absolute field put out by the Angels
and EVA's. It boasts enormous defensive power, and it is
able to greatly reduce the power of all attacking
weapons. The ability of EVA to neutralize the A.T.Field
of the Angels is one major reason why EVA was
considered as the only weapon against the Angels.
However, the same A.T.Field does not exist only in the
Angels or EVA's. Human also possesses this field. With

[Gaf's Room] (Gabu no HEYA)
A word spoken by Fuyutsuki in ep.26. He said that the
opening of Gaf's Room has the same meaning as the start
of the world as well as the opening of the door of the
finale. When this door is open, the surface of the Earth
turns to LCL, human can no longer keep intact their
physical forms as individuals but return to LCL form. At
TV ep.21, Ritsuko also mentioned the Gaf's Room.
[L.C.L]
The liquid that fills the cockpit of the Entry Plug. It is
sticky and has the smell like blood. It was discovered
that when its molecular arrangement is changed by
electricity charge, the liquid can perform several
functions including the mental link between EVA and
her pilot, supplying oxygen and providing both physical
and mental protection to the pilot. The liquid that fills
the lowest floor of the Terminal Dogma where Lilith was
located is also L.C.L. "L.C.L." is the abbreviation of
"Link Connected Liquid". There are many theories as to
what exactly L.C.L. is, but it seems that in fact it is what
was called "the soup of life".
[S^2 Engine] (S^2 KIKAN)
A power generation system based on the supersolenoid
theory advocated by Dr.Katsuragi (PY: Misato's father).
When EVA is loaded with this engine, its active time
could be extended to infinity. All Angels possess this
S^2 Engine, and EVA-01 got it when it devoured the
14th Angel. Moreover, all EVA's from EVA-05 onwards
also possess this engine and thus do not need Umbilical
Cable any more.
[Tree of Life] (SEIMEI no KI)
When the Human Complementation Plan starts, EVA-01
grows into something like a tree, with its roots spreaded
towards the sky and its branches extended to the ground.
Regarding this Fuyutsuki comments, "EVA-01 is
returned to the Tree of Life". A Tree of Life that has its
roots and branches inverted appears on both Hindu
scriptures and the Kabbalah. This was called "the
Inverted Tree"

Don't ask me to prove it in terms of the series, either. It's
enough for me that it doesn't contradict the series.
[Point One]: Curvature
AT-Fields are a curvature in the fabric of space (or even
reality, if you will), made up of force particles as of now
unknown to us.
[Point Two]: Obliviousness
AT-Fields exist oblivious of most currently known forces
and particles, because the curvatures of space that result
in them are on a different level (read "dimension") from
those that result in common particles.
[2-sub]: Parallelism
Amongst themselves, AT-Fields manifest a full range of
particles that parallel the forms and properties of known
force and matter particles.
[Point Three]: Laws
Among themselves, AT-Fields obey most of the physical
laws that apply to matter; e.g. they gravitate towards
each other, and when in motion, they tend to stay in
motion. Due to [Point Two], however, all of this is done
oblivious of most currently known forces and particles.
[3-A]: Stars
Due to [Point Three], the force particles that make up
AT-fields gather like the plasma clouds in which the
original stars were born. This implies that, literally, there
are giant stars of invisible AT-Field force particles
floating through space just like there are stars of matter.
[3-B]: Lilith / Adam
Lilith/Adam was most likely one of these "stars."
[Point Four]: LCL
The only known material that has any influence over
AT-Fields is LCL. (Harmonics? I haven't explained this
one yet.) When an AT-Field contacts LCL, the particles
within the liquid twist into an ordered configuration
similar to cells. On the other hand, upon contact with
LCL, the AT-Field clings to particles and is no longer
free to move around oblivious of the known physical
forces.
[4-sub]: Origin
LCL was there when Lilith/Adam arrived on Earth. It
*is* the "soup of life." Adam and Lilith just applied their
AT-Field . . .
[Point Five]: Evolution
The fractal complexity of the ordered configuration
created when LCL contacts an AT-Field depends on the
concentration of AT-Field force particles within the
given AT-Field. The higher the concentration, the more
complex the configuration is, and the higher on the
evolutionary ladder. Yes, evolution does happen. It still
is happening.
[Point Six]: Reproduction and Growth
When reproduction occurs, part of the parent(s)'
AT-Field is given to the child. As the child grows, it adds
configured LCL (in the form of food) to its body, and the
AT-Field configuring the LCL in the food to its own
AT-Field.
[Point Seven]: Soul
Only a part of the AT-Field is used to render the LCL its
configured form, but the rest of the AT-Field clings to
the rendered body due to it's "gravitation," using the
body as a focus. The part of the AT-Field not utilized in
shaping the body cannot directly determine the
configuration of the body. The "mind," however, can . . .
[7-sub]: Definition of Soul
The term [AT-Field] is interchangeable with the term
[soul].
[Point Eight]: Mind
While AT-Fields do not warrant sentience, the
application of an AT-Field to LCL may create one. As
the LCL the "mind" is made of is linked to the AT-Field,
depending on the height of its evolution, the "mind" may
or may not be able to control its AT-Field. Again, the
higher on the evolutionary ladder, the more the control.
[8-sub]: Mind over Matter
As AT-Fields are curves in the fabric of space, control
over AT-Fields allows the controller to do almost
anything.
[Point Nine]: Gravity
As "gravitation" between AT-Fields depends on the
distance between the AT-Fields in question, the
"concentration" of the AT-Fields, and the "mass" of the
AT-Fields, the lower the distance and the higher the
"mass" and "concentration" of one of them (or the other),
the more the force of attraction. This "gravitational
force" can overcome even the hold of LCL. When the
AT-Fields contact each other, they will merge.
[Point Ten]: Death
An AT-Field remains within a body until either:
[10-A]: Anti-AT-Field
the possible event described by [Point Nine] occurs.
or
[10-B]: Decay
the LCL that forms the body is chemically changed so
that it no longer has hold on the AT-Field.
[Point Eleven]: The Fate of Souls
In an event in which [10] occurs, the free AT-Field might
or might not gravitate into nearest other AT-Field,
depending on the "mass" and" concentration" of either of
them, and the distance between them. It will retain
structural integrity except under the effects of entropy.
Given that the AT-Field structure that makes up the
"mind" is not subject to erosion, the reapplication of the
free AT-Field into LCL insures that sentience is retained.
Possible mental activity while in the form of a free AT-
Field is unconfirmed.
[Point Twelve]: Super Solenoid
At high "concentrations," an extremely small amount of
AT-Field force particles convert into normal particles.
The amounts are so acutely small as compared to the
total "mass" of an AT-Field that can reach such a
concentration, that there is a seemingly endless supply of
normal particles. This is the theory behind the Super
Solenoid (S^2). An S^2 Engine is merely a structure
created by an LCL configuration that utilizes the Super
Solenoid effect to power a body.
[Point Thirteen]: "Neutralization"
The "AT-Fields" protecting most of the Angels in the
series are merely electro-magnetic manifestations of the
Super-Solenoid effect. These are *caused* by the
AT-Field, and their "neutralization" causes little actual
damage to the AT-Fields that create them. In other
words, we never actually *see* (figuratively speaking)
an AT-Field get "neutralized" in the series. We do see
neutralizations of the AT-Fields' matter/force
manifestations.
[13-sub]: Pattern Ranking
By this same reasoning, if a high energy, uniform
electromagnetic force field ever came within the vicinity
of Tokyo-3, the MAGI would call it "Pattern Blue."

Assumptions:
[Point One]: In the Beginning . . .
The original form of Lilith/Adam was an ATF 'star.' LCL
was already present on Earth.
[Point Two]: First Impact
Due to the amount of ATF present within the 'star,' the
massive binding of ATF to LCL caused an imbalance in
the structure of the 'star' that consequently caused the
First Impact. Lilith/Adam (and possibly the Lance) took
their current forms as a result of this. ATF scattered due
to the FI resulted in the beginning of evolution.
[Point Three]: Configuration
Lilith's current body (and I don't mean Rei), is
constructed from LCL. The ATF remaining within the
body after the departure of Rei gives it enough
gravitation to resist the pull of the Lance to a degree. At
close range, however, (by that, I mean *in* the body),
the pull of the Lance is strong enough to separate bits of
Lilith. The separated bits, having lost their ATF, reverts
to LCL.
[Point Four]:
The ATF "gravitation" of the Lance acts more like
magnetism than gravity. That is, this "magnetism" only
has a short-range hold (as opposed to the long range and
exponentially decreasing pull of gravity with distance).
[4-sub]: Dipolarity
The Lance is "dipolar."
[Point Five]: Black / White Moons
The Black/White moons are LCL constructs just like the
body of Lilith. The natural pull of the ATF of Lilith's
body (the focus of ATF within the Black Moon) causes
decay in the hold bonding the ATF of the Black Moon to
the LCL that forms it. This releases LCL.
[Point Six]:
If there's black and no white, "black" loses meaning. If
there's white with no black, "white" loses meaning.
When everything is ATF, and nothing isn't, then the
entire concept of ATF no longer has any meaning. The
Sea of LCL exists inside an ATF. Within it, the existence
of an ATF is meaningless. Hence Rei's statement, "This
is a world without AT-Fields."

Circumstantial Evidence (courtesy of Bochan_Bird):
In the first SEELE scene in EoE, SEELE 04(?) says: "A
sacrament to unite God, humans, and all other life forms
in death." This means that not only humans, but at the
very least animals, and possibly even plant life also
participate in Third Impact and evolution into the Tantai.
This would imply that they have souls. (That's right -
even PenPen) :P
I asked my wife and a couple of Japanese friends about
the scope of the word "seimei (= life), and they all
agreed that "seimei" is the general term for life, right
down to amoeba and plants. ("seimeitai" is slightly
different in nuance, but "seimei" is the word used in
EoE.)
ATF gravitation induced by an anti-ATF field In EoE,
the Eva series open up their S^2 engines while emitting
ATF, and the dimensional values start reversing.
At this point, Fuyutsuki says:
"An anti-A.T.Field...?"
When Lilith-Rei appears, the Eva series' ATF resonate
and amplify further, and the assimilation with Lilith-Rei
begins. A short time after that, the anti-ATF from
Lilith-Rei expands further, materializes, and the
Chamber of Gaf opens and starts sucking up souls.
Thus, the anti-ATF appears to be generated by
amplifying an ATF to an extreme level of energy (using
the S^2 engine). If the Lance is a naked S^2 engine, then
this may be why it was used in Antarctica, and also why
it was necessary for complementation with Lilith (=
Third Impact).
Now, gravitational force is proportional to mass, and I
believe the prevailing physics theory (string theory?)
states that energy and mass are the same thing just in
different states. If this is the case, then raising an ATF to
an extreme level of energy (mass) would create such a
gravitational pull on other ATF that they would be
unable to resist and would gravitate toward the "black
hole" of the anti-ATF.

[Cross-shaped explosions]
Note that the "tree of life" created by the merging of
UNIT-01 and the Lance was in part shaped like a cross.
As it's known that all living things are manifestations of
AT fields in LCL, wouldn't you say that the AT field of
the "tree of life" was that of a cross? If this is true, and
the "tree of life" is indeed the "tree of life" (the ultimate
living thing), then it's safe to assume that the ultimate AT
field is cross-shaped, and all the cross-shaped explosions
in EVA are, infact, high density AT fields in the process
of losing energy. Here the discussion ends because we
can't know the physics that control AT fields.
